Triple M‘s Lee Simon conducted an interview with BLACK SABBATH singer Ozzy Osbourne ahead of the band’s recent Australian tour. During the chat, which can be streamed using the SoundCloud widget below, Ozzy talked frankly about being sober again after his recent “major slip” back into drugs and alchohol, SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi‘s battle with cancer and Osbourne‘s thoughts on of the group’s new album, “13″.

Osbourne was asked by Spin.com why the band’s current touring drummer, Tommy Clufetos, did not record the drum tracks on “13″, on which the drums were played by Brad Wilk of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. Ozzy replied, “The way it was dealt with was wrong, because you can’t keep people waiting for nothing. We were going to use Tommy at the beginning, and Rick [Rubin, producer] was against it. And then it turned out that it wasn’t dealt with professionally and I got a bit pissed off. Anyway, Tommy‘s doing a great job on the road with SABBATH.”

Here’s the way Ozzy explained it to The Pulse Of Radio when he was asked what happened: “Tommy was offered the gig until Rick Rubin came along. Rick Rubin didn’t want Tommy, and nobody told — it was a bit of a communication breakdown. Tommy was on the side waiting, and it just didn’t work out, you know. It works out in the end.”

Asked what happened with original drummer Bill Ward, who was announced as part of the band’s reunion in late 2011 but bowed out a few months later, Ozzy told Spin, “To be absolutely truthful with you, I can’t really remember. It was such a long time ago. There was the business side of it and the money side of it. We just didn’t have the time to keep the people waiting another fucking ten years . . . We would have loved Bill Ward to step up to the plate, but it never worked out.”

Ward claimed that he sat out the reunion because of unfair contractual terms, although the members of SABBATH have hinted in other interviews that he wasn’t physically up to the task.

“13″ is the first album in 35 years to feature Osbourne, Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler all playing together.

The set, which came out on Tuesday (June 11), is likely to sell between 120,000 and 130,000 copies in the U.S. in its first week of release, according to industry web site Hits Daily Double. That could hand SABBATH its first No. 1 album ever in the U.S.

According to The Pulse Of Radio, BLACK SABBATH frontman Ozzy Osbourne has provided perhaps his most candid comments yet on original drummer Bill Ward‘s decision to back out of the band’s reunion album and tour. In a new interview with Mojo magazine, Ozzy explained, “I guess it’s to do with finances or something. But there was also another side to it. When Bill came along, we all had to ask, ‘Can he do an hour-and-a-half, two-hour gig? Can he cope?’ My suggestion was that we run through a set and see how he got on because he was so out of condition and the drummer is the most demanding job in the whole band. We looked at Bill, and he couldn’t remember what the fuck we were doing.”

Ozzy added that it “would have been cool” for the band to tour with a back-up drummer or just have Ward play a portion of the set, but that Warddidn’t come clean and say, ‘I can’t cut this gig.’”

Ozzy continued, “I get where he’s coming from, though. His pride was hurt and I get it. I really do get it. The guy will always be a dear, dear friend and a brother to me . . . I’m not gonna give Bill a hatchet job, but at the same time we haven’t got the patience to deal with it.”

Ward was on board for the reunion when it was first announced in November 2011, but backed out soon after, claiming that he was given contractual terms that were not fair.

SABBATH has used Ozzy‘s regular touring drummer Tommy Clufetos since then for live work. RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE‘s Brad Wilk laid down the drum tracks on the band’s upcoming album, “13″, due out June 11.

SABBATH finished the Australian leg of its world tour earlier in the month and played Japan’s first-ever Ozzfest on May 12. A North American trek begins on July 25 in the Woodlands, Texas.

BLACK SABBATH singer Ozzy Osbourne recently spoke to U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine about “13″, the first SABBATH record in 35 years to feature Ozzy, guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler all playing together.

I’ve not been this happy about an album in years,” Ozzy said. “I’m not trying to sell my home. If this record was just OK, I’d fucking say it. But honestly, hand on heart, it’s one of the best things I’ve done in my entire life.”

Ozzy also offered some thoughts on the situation surrounding original SABBATH drummer Bill Ward, who backed out of the band’s reunion last year.

It would have been great to have Bill — all of us said that,” said Ozzy. “But you can’t expect someone of Bill‘s age to be as agile as he used to be. He’s had heart attacks. If he’d turned up and played like he used to, or nearly as well, maybe we’d have worked something out… But we decided that if we were ever going to do this fucking album, you’ve got to be on the case. It got to the point where we said, ‘Are we just going to sit and wait for him to get off his fucking arse or what?’ We had to decide — we couldn’t just keep the fans waiting any fucking longer.”

In a recent interview with Mojo magazine, Ozzy offered more information about the reasons behind SABBATH‘s split with Ward. “I guess it’s to do with finances or something,” he explained. “But there was also another side to it. When Bill came along, we all had to ask, ‘Can he do an hour-and-a-half, two-hour gig? Can he cope?’ My suggestion was that we run through a set and see how he got on because he was so out of condition and the drummer is the most demanding job in the whole band. Best known for his innovative and unique guitar work with YES and FLASH, as well as his own critically acclaimed solo albums, guitar legend PETER BANKS passed away at his home in London on March 8th.

PeterBanks

Former BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward has written a poem in his memory.

Says Ward: “Because of the seemingly bleak circumstances and limited information about the death of Peter Banks, I reacted quite sadly to the news and felt driven to write this poem.

A Poem for Peter Banks

How can this be
I didn’t plan for it to be like this
Mine was a far more grandiose end.
Aloneness in life
Aloneness in death
Who will say a kind word,
Have I pushed you all away, so much I cannot be recognized
Will no one stand for me, now, in these moments of closure, and passing.
It isn’t cold anymore,
And hunger has left me
My predicaments still undone in life, are somehow in death solved.

I can no longer hear silence, is there no one to champion me
One voice will be enough
I’m worth something, it’ll mean everything to me
Dark shadows betray me not, seek another in ruin, to commit your slanderous verbiage upon
Leave me, rant and drag down and complete your next victim’s demise
Your emptiness is un-radiant.

No matter what I’ve done
Or who I became
When one voice speaks
The loneliness cannot circle me
When one voice validates me
I can rest in peace”

According to Gigwise, former BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward has reiterated his desire to play with the reformed metal band admitting “If there is some longevity with Black Sabbath, then I’d like to be part of it.”

As part of the Black Sabbath And The Birth Of Heavy Metal six-part series presented by Vice, Bill Ward speaks to presenter Jesse Hughes about all things Sabbath.

Bill Ward told EAGLES OF DEATH METAL’s Jesse Hughes, who is presenting the show; “I wanna play hard rock music. I wanna play loud drums. I love playing with Terry. I love playing with Oz. And I love playing with Tony. When Tony opens up with huge chords man, I still get the same shiver up my back than I did when we were eighteen year old kids.”

In February, Ward said in an extensive statement: “At this time, I would love nothing more than to be able to proceed with the Black Sabbath album and tour. However, I am unable to continue unless a ‘singable’ contract is drawn up; a contract that reflects some dignity and respect toward me as an original member of the band.”

The reunited Black Sabbath – guitarist Tony Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler – have written 15 songs with Rick Rubin (METALLICA, SLAYER) at the production helm. In an interview with NME in June Ozzy remarked: “Next year – 2013 – is a good clue of what we’ll call the album.”

BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward (pictured below) has released the following statement regarding the passing of former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord:

“My wife and I wish to respectfully send out condolences to the Lord family. News of the recent passing of Jon Lord has been met with sadness in our house. Reflecting upon his keyboard sounds, I must endorse how much he brought in originality and vision to the defining edge of hard rock. He is well-proven as a part of rock’s historical journey and will not be forgotten.

“Thank you, Jon Lord. Rest in peace.”

The members of BLACK SABBATH say that there’s still a chance for founding drummer Bill Ward to return to the band. Ward has so far sat out the legendary metal act’s reunion — not participating in the recording of a new album or live shows — due to his dissatisfaction with the contract he was offered. But singer Ozzy Osbourne told The Times. “There was no row, there was no argument. The door ain’t closed. Whether we work something out up the road, I don’t know.”

Added guitarist Tony Iommi, “It’s not a personal thing. If he phoned us up tomorrow, which he hasn’t, but if he did…”

Osbourne previously told NME about Ward‘s contractual dispute with SABBATH‘s management, “As far as I know his requests were very unreasonable. Nothing would have been better [than] if he would have been [willing to play with us]. I don’t know. I don’t deal with the business.” Iommi added, “We’ve tried everything with Bill at the moment, and it’s just not happening. Our legal people are dealing with his legal people. It’s all nonsense. We haven’t actually heard from Bill, any of this stuff. It’s all been through his lawyers.”

Ward has said that he’s ready to travel and rejoin the band if and when a contract is offered that is to his liking.

Ward was present with the rest of the group when they announced a new album — the original lineup’s first since 1978 — and world tour at a press conference last November, but went on strike shortly after that.

In the meantime, Iommi was diagnosed with cancer, forcing SABBATH to drastically curtail its touring plans and move the recording of the new CD to London, so that Iommi could remain close to his doctors.

The drum parts on the record are reportedly being played by Tommy Clufetos, who also played an intimate hometown gig in Birmingham, England with SABBATH in May and appeared with the group when it headlined the U.K.’s Download festival in June.

Barring a last-minute breakthrough with Ward, Clufetos will be behind the kit in August when the band appears at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

TONY MARTIN is one of those legendary musicians who has a main part in the writing of Heavy Metal history. His great style in singing makes many fans and critics  believe he is one of the best Metal vocalists. The second most long standing vocalist of Heavy Metal creators BLACK SABBATH, Tony Martin was recently interviewed by Metal Shock Finland’s Ali Blackdiamond ahead of his upcoming one-off show with his band HEADLESS CROSS at The Asylum in Birmingham on July 27th 2012. Some of this interesting conversation can be read below:

When discussing the upcoming Asylum Show, Tony said: ‘It feels a bit nervewracking as it’s the first time playing my own solo things, in my own country, in my own town!’ The set is awesome, just brilliant, I’m really looking forward to it. We’d love to ram it full and make a real party of it.

This year has been quite eventful with the release of ‘The Third Cage‘ with Dario Mollo, has really livened things up, so we decided to go for it.

Blaze is going to do an unplugged acoustic set, I might even get up and do something with him.’

Tony had the following to say when asked about Bill Ward exiting BLACK SABBATH:

‘ My years with Black Sabbath span 10 years and I’ve heard all the stories, not once did they say a bad word about Bill. They’ve always rated him, they love him. He’s had his little moments like we all have, them included, but I didn’t understand why they didn’t give him time to get his thing together, why not set up rehearsals to help him out? It seems a bit like a publicity stunt in that they’re saying ‘we can’t be bothered to do rehearsals to get him to learn all the stuff again, so we’ll save it for another time and another reunion.’

I really don’t know, but just don’t get it. Bill’s a lovely guy by the way, really cool.’

The reunited BLACK SABBATH – guitarist Tony Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler – look ahead to their headline performance at Download 2012, and discuss how they’re looking to the future, including a new album, in the wake of guitarist Tony Iommi’s successful treatment for cancer.

The trio also discuss the status of original drummer Bill Ward. Ozzy says “the door is still open. His requests were unreasonable. Nothing would’ve been better than to have him play.”

Black Sabbath are currently working on their first studio album in thirty three years and first since 1978′s Never Say Die! with producer Rick Rubin (SLAYER, METALLICA).

Speaking to NME in a new video interview, the band discussed the direction of the new material, the influence of Rick Rubin and their recent Download warm-up gig in Birmingham.

Commenting on the progress of the sessions, Osbourne said: “We’ve written about 15 songs so far, whether they’ll get on an album [I don't know]… You just keep on writing. I was trying to [work out]: where would we be now musically if we’d have stayed together?

He added: “Next year – 2013 – is a good clue of what we’ll call the album.”

Meanwhile, bassist Geezer Butler revealed how Rubin had approached the writing sessions with the band, explaining: “He sat us down, put the first album on and said ‘listen to this’, imagine it’s 1969, you’ve just done that, what would you do next?”
