BORKNAGAR: Announce New Drummer, “Urd” Is Now Available For Pre-Order

Norwegian metallers BORKNAGAR have recently announced a new drummer, Baard Kolstad, for the band’s line-up. Baard will perform his first show together with the band at this year’s Inferno Festival in Norway, April 4th–7th in Oslo, Norway. Baard Kolstad has recently won the world championship in V- Drums, in Los Angeles.

BORKNAGAR’s mastermind Øystein G. Brun comments as follows: “First and foremost I would like to welcome Baard into the fold, may our journey ahead become a joy able ride. We are all very excited about Baard teaming up with the band. He has proven to be an immensely talented drummer with skills and a technique that is simply breathtaking. Our first encounter was late last year when he stepped in and recorded drums for ICS Vortex’s cover version of Metallica’s song “Don’t Tread On Me”. Since then we have kept an eye on him. When we spilt with David Kinkade a bit later on, the road ahead was obvious. We are all very much looking forward to pull off the very first gigs…” and also Baard Kolstad added: ”I’m really happy for this opportunity and the fact that I have earned the respect to play with BORKNAGAR. Really looking forward to the musical adventure that the future holds and will do my best to deal with the challenge in the most respectful and creative way. Now, I just want to play!”

As previously posted, BORKNAGAR are going to release their upcoming album “Urd” on March 26th, 2012 in Europe and North America via Century Media Records. The album’s artwork was designed by Brazilian artist Marcelo Vasco (www.P2RDESIGN.com), who has not only already worked on the band’s previous “Universal” release but also with artists such as Soulfly, Belphegor, Einherjer or Keep of Kalessin. The mixing duties for the album were taken care of by Jens Bogren at Sweden’s Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, etc.). This album can be now pre-ordered in Europe from CM Distro in its different formats but also as bundle of the limited edition Digipak with an exclusive shirt.

BORKNAGAR Enlists New Drummer

Norwegian avantgarde metallers BORKNAGAR have recruited Baard Kolstad (ICS VORTEX) as their new drummer.

BORKNAGAR‘s new album, “Urd”, will be released on March 26 in Europe and March 27 in North America via Century Media Records. The CD was recorded with Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (OPETH, PARADISE LOST, KATATONIA) in Örebro, Sweden.

The “Urd” artwork was designed by Brazilian artist Marcelo Vasco, who has not only already worked on BORKNAGAR‘s previous “Universal” release but also with artists such as SOULFLY, BELPHEGOR, EINHERJER and KEEP OF KALESSIN.

Norwegian Metallers BORKNAGAR have announced that a first promotional song, “Roots” from their new studio album, “Urd”, is available today on the website of Metal Hammer (Germany). Check this track on this location.

“In regards to the depth, diversity and magnitude of our new album, “Urd”, it almost feels painful to slice off just a tiny bit of the bloody roast for the very first official “starter”. I would argue that each and every song on the new album stands on solid ground, but as usual with our music, the songs empower each other in the context of a full album. That said, “Roots” is probably the song on the album that gives you the most representative impression of “Urd”. Musically it contains most of the elements that framework the musical universe of BORKNAGAR, and lyrically this song is gnawing on the very spine of our lyrical tradition. Hope you enjoy this song, the first tiny glimpse into our new opus. The beast is about to be unleashed…” Øystein G. Brun commented.

Norwegian Avantgarde Metallers BORKNAGAR unveild the artwork and tracklisting of their forthcoming album, “Urd”, which to be released on March 26th, 2012 in Europe as well as March 27th, 2012 in North America via Century Media Records. The album’s artwork was designed by Brazilian artist Marcelo Vasco (www.P2RDESIGN.com), who has not only already worked on the band’s previous “Universal” release but also with artists such as Soulfly, Belphegor, Einherjer or Keep of Kalessin. “The cover and design for ‘Urd’ is spot on when it comes to portraying the very core of the band. This time around we wanted an earthly expression through our cover and general design to support and empower the main themes on the album. You can almost smell and feel the texture of the old Norse wooden carvings – still there is a sophisticated and eclectic approach to the expression that entwines perfectly into the music. Marcelo Vasco enhanced our ideas into brilliance, he painted the face of the beast that is about to be unleashed…” Øystein G. Brun commented on the artwork.

“Our previous album was called “Universal” and where should we go after an album title with such a magnitude? Well, we decided to head back home to earth. We really wanted to get back to the core of the band, where it all started – the admiration and pondering about nature and mankind’s place therein. “Urd” is the name of one of the norns that according to northern mythology stands under Yggdrasill and weaves the lifeline of mankind. “Urd” is representing the past, while “Verdande” is representing the present and “Skuld” is representing the future. You might very well say that this is an ancient expression of what we today know as DNA. And I have always been very fascinated by the fact that parts and bits of our DNA actually derive from the very beginning of time. All living creatures are somewhat connected to the very first organic cell. That is some of the story behind the album title…” The band previously explained the album title and its overall concept.

Norwegian avantgarde metallers BORKNAGAR have completed work on their new studio album with Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (OPETH, PARADISE LOST, KATATONIA) in Örebro, Sweden. Entitled “Urd”, the CD will be released on March 26 in Europe and March 27 in North America via Century Media Records.

Commented BORKNAGAR mastermind Øystein G. Brun: “Our new album, ‘Urd’, was finished in mid December and all in all we spent about six months to record, produce and mix it. In the ‘Bork-World’ this isn’t really long, but I can assure you that we have never before invested so much time, energy and effort into one single production. It has been a tough, yet inspiring ride.

“Since June 2011 I have constantly been working with this album, recording, editing and so forth — day and night. The same goes for my comrades. Never before have we made an album where everybody in the band has been so heavily involved and dedicated as this time around.

“‘Urd’ is surely the peak of our musical journey so far and we are extremely proud to have made this giant of an album! It’s massive, it’s emotional, it’s fast, it’s slow, it’s epic, and it’s progressive… all the ingredients that we have crafted our musical world on! And not to mention the ‘golden threesome’ on vocals (Vintersorg, Mr. Vortex and Lazare) really shines on this album… Do I need to say more?!”

BORKNAGAR And Drummer DAVID KINKADE Go Their Separate Ways

Norway’s BORKNAGAR has issued the following update:

“BORKNAGAR has decided to part ways with the U.S. drummer David Kinkade. This is first and foremost due to the logistical challenges we have been facing having a U.S. drummer in a Norwegian band the last couple of years. Sometimes reality bites and in order to be a fully operative band, we need a drummer based in Norway. The split is of friendly manner and we would like to say thanks for everything David has contributed with in relations to the band and we would also like to wish him the best of luck for his future endeavors.”

In a statement released to BLABBERMOUTH.NET, Kinkade said about his departure from BORKNAGAR, “I am leaving BORKNAGAR due to a number of reasons completely out of my control but I assure you that I’ve thought it through for quite some time now and I can honestly say that the spark just isn’t there for me anymore. I tried everything I could over the past three years to make things happen. Now I just hope, for the fans’ sake, that they will completely deliver… The fans really deserve it. I wish BORKNAGAR all the best in their future endeavors.”

Kinkade, who has previously played with joined ARSIS and MALEVOLENT CREATION, joined SOULFLY a few weeks ago following the departure of that group’s longtime skinsman Joe Nunez. Kinkade will appear on SOULFLY‘s already completed new album, which was recorded last month at a Phoenix, Arizona studio with producer Chris “Zeuss” Harris (CHIMAIRA, HATEBREED, ALL THAT REMAINS, THE ACACIA STRAIN, BORN OF OSIRIS, SHADOWS FALL) for an early 2012 release via Roadrunner Records.

BORKNAGAR is currently recording its next album for a tentative February 2012 release via Century Media Records. The CD will be mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren in November at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden.

Commented BORKNAGAR mainman Øystein G. Brun: “Looking back on our previous releases, our major challenge has always been to materialize our highly detailed music and compromises have been done production-wise. This time around there will be no compromise and hopefully you will witness the most powerful, rich, detailed and dynamic BORKNAGAR album to date!”

BORKNAGAR‘s latest album, “Universal”, sold around 500 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 116 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

“Universal” was released on February 22, 2010 in Europe and March 2, 2010 in North America through Indie Recordings. The effort was made available in four different formats: regular jewelcase CD, limited digipack (including bonus disc), CD box with extras and gatefold LP with double vinyl.

“Universal” was recorded and mixed at Toproom Studio in Lunner, Norway, with the bandmembers themselves handling the production duties.

FINNTROLL, BORKNAGAR, I.C.S. VORTEX, Lemmy Kilmister (MOTÖRHEAD), DEVILDRIVER, SODOM and  DORO are among the artists who are featured on the 20th-anniversary tribute to METALLICA‘s self-titled album, to be made available with the September 2011 issue of Germany’s Metal Hammer magazine. The 80-page publication containing the disc, behind-the-scenes articles and interviews as well as a 32-page Wacken Open Air special will hit newsstands in Germany on August 24.

The world-exclusive “Metallica” tribute album includes eleven previously unreleased recordings plus a cover of “Enter Sandman” that was recorded by Lemmy Kilmister and members of ZEBRAHEAD for the 1998 compilation “ECW: Extreme Music”:

Although METALLICA had scored their first radio and video airplay with their previous effort, 1988′s “…And Justice For All”, the black album was the band’s biggest commercial breakthrough, producing five singles and making them into one of the most popular rock bands in the world.

Norway’s BORKNAGAR is recording its next album for a tentative February 2012 release via Century Media Records. The CD will be mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren in November at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden.

Commented BORKNAGAR mainman Øystein G. Brun: “As we speak, I am currently sitting in my home studio (The Bork-tower) in Bergen recording guitars for the new BORKNAGAR album.

“I have been working 24/7 the last weeks to get out the very best of my abilities and polish all riffs into perfection.

“I am so excited about this production as we have been planning to take a huge step forward in terms of production and being able to finalize our new effort with Jens at Fascination Street Studio is a perfect match.
