Big dreams came true for the members of thrash-metal band ANTHRAX in September 2011 when they returned to their hometown of New York and stepped on the stage at Yankee Stadium with the other three acts that are part of the so-called “Big Four” of 1980s thrash metal — METALLICA, SLAYER and MEGADETH. As the only one of the “Big Four” bands whose members are from New York, a number of the band have many childhood memories of attending Yankees games, making the concert especially significant.

Specialized ANTHRAX Yankees jerseys have since been made for the occasion are currently hanging in the historic baseball stadium for all to see. Check out a photo below.

For ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante playing Yankee Stadium was extremely personal; his father, also named Charlie, was a huge baseball fan and onetime budding ballplayer, who died when Charlie Jr. was 5.

“I would give all this up just to have my father around,” Benante told ESPN.com, “but to have him be there and see me playing Yankee Stadium, I know for him it would probably be the greatest thing ever.”

Benante‘s father, who was scouted by the majors, would regale a four-year-old Charlie with all the stats and facts about the Yankees players while the two played catch in the backyard. “My dad was a huge Yankees fan,” Charlie recalled. “I remember he always had the TV or radio on, listening to every Yankees game he could. He died when I was five, so he never knew about my success as a musician, but I know he would have been so proud of me playing Yankee Stadium. I know that in some way, he’ll be there, giving me the power I’ll need to knock it out of the park.”

Australia’s “Purest Heavy Music Magazine” Heavy spoke with drummer John Dette, who recently completed double-duty, filling for both legendary SLAYER and ANTHRAX drummers, Dave Lombardo and Charlie Benante at this year’s Soundwave shows. Here are a few excerpts from the chat:

JohnDetteSlayer

Dette on the possibilities of staying with Slayer:

“It’s baby steps right now. I think it would be too early for me to make a comment like that at this time, but all I can tell you is that we’re having a great time. It feels great on stage and everybody that’s actually at the shows and seen the shows, not just the fans, but even the crew on the side of the stage all have smiles on their faces so I must be doing something right and I guess we’ll see what the future brings.”

Slayer fans being up in arms when the news broke that Lombardo wouldn’t be touring Australia:

“Lombardo has been such an integral part of Slayer and it’s only natural for fans to feel upset right now. I mean I’m a Slayer fan first and, of course, I… paused a little bit when I heard the news, but… you’re never going to please everyone and the only thing that I can do… is give it the integrity that the music deserves then I feel that I’ve done my job and that’s all I can do. If the fans accept it then they accept it, if they don’t, they don’t, but that’s out of my control really.”

With Dette having replaced or filled in for Bostaph and Lombardo in Slayer and with Bostaph and Lombardo getting to record with both Slayer and TESTAMENT where Dette has only played with the bands; any animosity or grudges held?

“I don’t know how Dave feels. I haven’t spoken to Dave in a few weeks. I saw Dave back in January at the NAMM convention, which is a large music convention in California that happens every year, and… I’ve known both of those guys for years now obviously. I certainly don’t hold anything against them. There’s nothing to hold against them for the fact that they’ve recorded albums.” He continues “There’s no reason to hold a grudge on anything like that and as far as my history with Slayer in the past it’s just something that was so long ago. You know, it’s funny because when people start asking me questions about it again because of all of this has happened so suddenly I’m trying to remember because it was literally 16 years ago when I was in the band… I think that obviously Bostaph has done an amazing job with his time in Slayer and he’s done an amazing job in Testament as well and it’s great that he’s still on there playing and I’m sure regardless of what happens with Dave, if he comes back to Slayer, great, if he goes on and does other things I’m sure whatever he does will be phenomenal as well.”

ANTHRAX is preparing to hit the road as part of the Metal Alliance Tour where it will be perform its classic 1987 album, “Among The Living”, in its entirety.

Video footage of ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante getting his chops ready for the tour can be viewed below.

The Metal Alliance Tour, which also features EXODUS, HIGH ON FIRE, MUNICIPAL WASTE, HOLY GRAIL and SHADOWS FALL on select dates, is scheduled to kick off on March 22 at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California.

ANTHRAX recently tapped former TESTAMENT/SLAYER and current ANIMETAL USA drummer Jon Dette to sit behind the kit for the veteran thrash metal band’s Australian tour, which kicked off on February 21 in Brisbane. Dette filled in as a temporary replacement for Benante, who was “dealing with personal issues right now and can’t leave” the U.S., according to ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian.

Dette previously filled in for Benante on ANTHRAX‘s European tour last fall as the support act for MOTÖRHEAD.

Benante and his wife were arrested on July 27, 2012 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Elkhart, Indiana for domestic battery in front of a child. The drummer later issued a statement through his attorney claiming that he “was assaulted several times during an altercation that sent him to the emergency room with a gash at the back of his head that required several staples to close.”

Charlie and ANTHRAX bassist Frank Bello (who is Benante‘s nephew) missed several shows on ANTHRAX‘s North American tour in February 2012 in order to spend time with Charlie‘s mother, who was terminally ill. On February 4, 2012, Benante informed fans via his official web site that his mother passed away.

More recently, Benante was forced to miss a number of shows on last summer’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival while he was recovering from a minor hand injury. Filling in for him was SHADOWS FALL drummer Jason Bittner.

ANTHRAX has tapped former TESTAMENT/SLAYER and current ANIMETAL USA drummer Jon Dette (pictured below) to sit behind the kit for the veteran thrash metal band’s Australian tour, which will kick off on February 21 in Brisbane. Dette is “an animal” who is “going to make history” as a temporary replacement for longtime ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante, who “is dealing with personal issues right now and can’t leave” the U.S., according to ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian. “[Charlie is] really bummed about not being able to head down there,” says Ian.

Dette previously filled in for Benante on ANTHRAX‘s European tour last fall as the support act for MOTÖRHEAD.

Fan-filmed video footage of ANTHRAX‘s November 21, 2012 concert at Zénith in Paris, France — featuring Dette on the drums — can be seen below.

Dette joined SLAYER in 1996 when Paul Bostaph left to work on his side project, THE TRUTH ABOUT SEAFOOD. Dette performed with SLAYER at the 1996 Ozzfest to promote the band’s covers album, “Undisputed Attitude”.

Prior to joining SLAYER, Dette appeared on TESTAMENT‘s “Live At The Fillmore” album, which came out in 1995.

Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN), Charlie Benante (ANTHRAX), Dave Lombardo (SLAYER), Ray Luzier (KORN), Mike Portnoy (ADRENALINE MOB, DREAM THEATER) are among the drummers who took part in the Bonzo Bash NAMM Jamm 2013, the ultimate tribute to late LED ZEPPELIN drummer John Henry “Bonzo” Bonham, which took over Anaheim, California on Thursday, January 24 at the Observatory. Video footage of the performance can be seen below.

Bonzo Bash founder and S.U.N. guitarist Brian Thomas Tichy (formerly of WHITESNAKE) recently said, “Bonzo Bash is a drummer’s playground. There’s plenty of toys and our parents taught us to play well with others.

“It is a relatively simple concept. When I first thought of this, the idea seemed too cool NOT to try. You get a John Bonham replica drum kit (courtesy of Natal Drums) complete with Paiste gong and tympani, up front, center stage, and have each drummer perform their favorite LED ZEPPELIN song with a house band (THE MOBY DICKS).

“It’s such a unique night, seeing how all these great drummers approach the same drum set making it their own! And THE MOBY DICKS hold their own as a true force to be reckoned with! There is structure, and within the structure, there is freedom; freedom, groove, and volume! The combination makes the pace and vibe of this show like a backyard party right next to an annual wildebeest river crossing! John Bonham deserves it! His right foot alone deserves it!! Bonzo Bashes are always the ultimate Bonzo tribute show and that’s the fact, Jack!”

Roxwel conducted an interview with ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante at the end of last year. The chat has now been posted on YouTube and can be seen below.

Asked about ANTHRAX‘s current lineup is holding up after the band went through so many singer changes between 2005 and 2010, Benante said, “Actually, for the first time in a long time, it feels nice; it’s settled. When we’re together, it’s a hell of a lot better than we are when we are apart.”

He added, “When we’re together, we’re always together — hanging, talking… It’s good. That’s all I can say. I’m sure other bands can relate to things that I say. When you’re five together, it’s like you’re five brothers, and sometimes, one day, one of those guys will come in, he’s having a bad day, it kind of affects the whole vibe. And by the end of the night, it’s done, it’s finished — you know, goodbye. And everything is OK.”

Benante also spoke about ANTHRAX‘s latest studio album, “Worship Music”, which saw the light of day in September 2011 — eight years after its predecessor, “We’ve Come For You All”. Singer Joey Belladonna‘s return to the band prompted some of the songs originally recorded with previous vocalist Dan Nelson to be re-crafted with fresh lyrics or tweaked to better suit his overall vibe and energy. Some of the songs were completely replaced with brand-new songs and all have Belladonna‘s inimitable vocal stamp on them.

“It’s hard to take these songs and not listen to it as a whole piece,” Charlie said. “Because there’s thrash elements on the record, there’s definitely newer-sounding songs on the record. But there is a reason for some of the thrashier songs, and that’s just what we were feeling — a lack of it. So those songs just naturally came out. Like ‘Earth On Hell’, I remember having this idea for that song in my head, and it was just this fast riff. And I was, like, ‘Woah, here we go. I’m glad it’s going back that way.’ But it wasn’t intentional; it just happened that way.”

On the topic of whether there were any leftover songs that didn’t make “Worship Music”, Benante said, “There was quite a bit of material [written for the album], but believe me, there was a lot more [that we could have recorded and released]. I really wanted to make it a double record, but we didn’t go that way. But I had enough material to make it that much. But, you know, we kind of said, ‘Let’s just concentrate on one and then not take so long to do another one.’ So that was fine; that was fine with me. And maybe a double album is too much to absorb right away, you know what I mean?! But I also felt, ‘Well, shit, it’s been a long time since our last record. Maybe we should give them as much as we possibly could.’”

He added, “Anyway, we got it down to, like, 13 songs that we felt really strong about. And that was it. And again, the record didn’t really start to take shape until [the fall of 2010].”

SHADOWS FALL drummer Jason Bittner has posted the following message:

“I’ll be drumming for ANTHRAX this weekend in Argentina, filling in for my good friend Charlie Benante! Hope to see you there!”

Charlie Benante recently issued the following update:

“Okay, I gotta get this out. My mom left us today. She fought her battle as long as she could. Thank you all for all your thoughts and prayers. My mom was all about letting me follow my dream, she always pushed me in that direction. She was the one who would take me to buy my records, she was the one who would sit through a matinee of all five Planet Of The Apes Movies. She was the one who got me to be who I am. She was all about her kids and she spread the love to everyone who met her too. I am going to celebrate her life everyday and I will play the NYC Show Wednesday for my Mom. She always enjoyed the thrash metal.
