Nuclear Blast has issued that the Legendary Bay Area thrash metallers DEATH ANGEL will enter AudioHammer Studios next month to begin recording the follow up to their 2010 release, Relentless Retribution. Guitarist Rob Cavestany recently checked in to give the following update:

deathangel_bandheader

“After nearly 3 years of nonstop touring for Relentless Retribution, we are about to enter the studio to record our seventh album! We are playing the final show of the Relentless Retribution Tour on March 31 in Holland, fly home for a few days of final pre-production rehearsals in Oakland, then begin tracking in Florida on April 8.

Relentless turned out the way we wanted so we we’re taking it to the next level with the same team. The new album will be done at AudioHammer Studios with Jason Suecof and I producing. We had a blast doing the last record there and now we know each other better and how well we work together… plus the album cover art is being done by Brent Elliot White who did Relentless Retribution. Let’s just say we have a good feeling about this one.

It was our idea all along to go directly into the studio following the end of this tour, without taking time off. We always take a break after an album’s touring cycle ends. You basically have to after spending so much time on the road, traveling and performing constantly. But not this time! This tour is the longest one we’ve ever done and that live energy is in our new songs! The glory and the heartache, it’s all there.

That said, all the music has been written – much of it on tour buses during the past couple of years, the rest of it in the studio over the past few months. This is some of the heaviest, fastest, most powerful material we’ve ever created! There’s something really dark in it too… music is and always will be our outlet to vent and release the built up pressure that life deals. In the world today we need it more than ever!!!

Currently the new record is slated for release in October 2013. Of course a massive tour will follow! It’s our mission to deliver, we ain’t fuckin’ around! Thank you all for your support! Big Hug!”

San Francisco Bay Area metallers DEATH ANGEL have begun demoing material for the follow-up to 2010′s “Relentless Retribution”. The band is currently recording drums and guitars. A photo from the sessions can be seen below.

“Relentless Retribution” sold 2,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 10 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200. The band’s previous album, “Killing Season”, opened with around 2,300 units back in March 2008. This number was in line with the performance of its predecessor, “The Art of Dying”, which registered a first-week sales tally of around 2,100 back in May 2004.

“Relentless Retribution” was released in the U.S. on September 14, 2010 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with producer Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, AUGUST BURNS RED, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, ALL THAT REMAINS, WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER). The cover artwork was created by Brent Elliot White (JOB FOR A COWBOY, CARNIFEX, WHITECHAPEL).

DEATH ANGEL‘s long-awaited DVD, “A Thrashumentary”, will be released later in the year. Guitarist Ted Aguilar recently stated about the set, “It’s gonna cover the history of DEATH ANGEL from the very beginning all the way up to the current version of DEATH ANGEL now. It’s gonna be jam-packed with a lot of old footage, stuff from early D.A., even their side projects after D.A., when D.A. broke up and THE ORGANIZATION formed, and the reformation of the band [for an appearance at] Thrash Of The Titans [festival in 2001].”

According to a press release, “A Thrashumentary” is a combination live video and documentary, all wrapped up in one thrashing DVD. The footage was directed by Tommy Jones (SOILWORK, KATAKLYSM) and mixed by Chris Clancy of The Studio. The film gives the viewer an in-depth look into one of the longest-running thrash acts out of the San Francisco Bay Area, a region known for turning out historic thrash bands such as METALLICA, TESTAMENT and EXODUS.

BamMagazine.com recently conducted an interview with guitarist Ted Aguilar of San Francisco Bay Area metallers DEATH ANGEL. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

BamMagazine.com: Have you played all the songs off “The Ultra-Violence” before?

Ted: I’m sure the band did back in the ’80s. Since the band reformed, we’ve played everything off that album except for “Final Death”. But when we started to do this 25th-anniversary run and had to play the “The Ultra-Violence” instrumental, that was a task, having to re-learn everything. It was challenging, and it was also fresh, because we haven’t done [the songs] in a very long time, and “Final Death” was so new to everyone. It’s getting us more into that thrash vibe. We’re ending the “Relentless Retribution” cycle, and having to do “The Ultra-Violence” is getting us into that thrash, which is also going to transpire into the next record. And it’s starting to sound like we’re playing faster on these newer songs we’ve been writing.

BamMagazine.com: Is it the first time that DEATH ANGEL has played an album in its entirety?

Ted: Ever since the band formed, it’s the first time the band has done the album in its entirety like this. So, it’s cool. It’s been challenging and fun to do “The Ultra-Violence”.

BamMagazine.com: You guys have been writing for a new album while on tour?

Ted: Yeah, we’ve been writing for a while, when we’re on the road, and riffs have been written. At least ideas have been getting recorded. When we go home during any gaps in-between tours, we start piecing them together. We have songs, no lyrics yet, eight skeleton songs. And Mark‘s [Osegueda, vocals] gonna start trying to put some lyrics to them. So, hopefully, by the end of the year, we’re looking at probably having 16 songs, maybe more. We’ll start picking out the best ones and start recording.

BamMagazine.com: And you guys have a DVD coming out?

Ted: Yes!

BamMagazine.com: Anytime soon?

Ted: We thought it would be in the fall, but a lot of things started to come up. We started to see the final cuts, and we wanted to add more. First it was supposed to be a live show with behind-the-scenes footage. Then, when we saw it — it was killer, and our minds started changing. Like, “No, let’s just do a documentary.” It’s a “thrashumentary.” So we had all these ideas: “Let’s push back the release date and start doing this…” We hoped to get it out by the summer… but summer came, and we got busy, and our video guy, Tommy, got busy with other stuff. Right now, I can say it’ll be before the end of the year. We just turned in the final edit notes, and hopefully by the end of next week we will see the final edits. It’s looking good. Basically, it’s going to give you a little history of [DEATH ANGEL], from the beginning until the band broke up, and all the side projects in-between, the band reforming, all the way until now. It’s really good. And it’s going to be a pretty long one, but it’s going to be worth the wait!
