Speaking to AOL‘s Noisecreep, DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno stated about the songwriting process for “Koi No Yokan”, “We were coming out of a tough time, obviously, and our goal was to kind of rebuild what we created over all the years. I felt like we had to prove ourselves. We’d taken so much time between records, had some inner turmoil, and our records were starting to get pieced together versus really being created together, so for us it was a chance to get back to basics. We didn’t have an idea of what sort of style we wanted. We just came in fired up and motivated to do something great. It was all very positive. We had more songs than ever, tons of ideas.”
DEFTONES played two brand new songs — “Roller Derby” and “Rosemary” — during last night’s (Saturday, July 28) concert at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California. Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be seen below.
“Roller Derby” and “Rosemary” are slated to appear on DEFTONES‘s seventh album, which is tentatively scheduled for release on October 9. The CD will follow up 2010′s “Diamond Eyes”, which was the group’s most successful and acclaimed outing in years. Lead singer Chino Moreno told Billboard.com why the band got back to work faster than usual. “It was important that we wanted to not drag it out,” he said. “We have a well-documented history of taking forever to make records. But with our last record, we did it in a really short, good amount of time, probably four or five months from the time we started writing until we finished it. For us, that was record time, so this time the idea was, ‘Let’s go in and start a record on this date and let’s try to be finished by summertime and keep this work ethic we kind of stumbled upon on the last one,’ and we did.”
DEFTONES worked again with producer Nick Raskulinecz, who produced “Diamond Eyes” and has also worked on albums by RUSH and FOO FIGHTERS.
Asked how the new DEFTONES disc sounds, Moreno told Billboard.com, “It’s not a super fast or slow record. It’s very dynamic. Some of my favorite things about DEFTONES are the dynamics. Yes, we’re a heavy band, but we’re not just in-your-face aggro the whole time, punching you in the face. There’s a lot of aggression in some of the music, but there’s also this very soothing element where there’s a lot of soundscapes rather than attack, attack, attack the whole time. I understand that’s a big part of our sound, but I really feel like we reached a peak on our dynamics on this record with those two qualities — the beauty of something and just straight, ruthless aggression.”
The group also intends to continue their tradition of recording several cover tunes that could end up as B-sides, with Moreno revealing that they’ve been toying with songs from ELVIS PRESLEY and EARTH, WIND & FIRE, among others.
DEFTONES will promote the new CD’s upcoming release with a string of tour dates with SYSTEM OF A DOWN, beginning on August 2 in Camden, New Jersey.
“Diamond Eyes” debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard album chart when it came out, making it the band’s highest charting effort since 2003′s “Deftones”.
“Diamond Eyes” featured two Top 20 rock hits in the title track and “You’ve Seen The Butcher”.
The album was written and recorded after the late 2008 auto accident that left bassist Chi Cheng in a semi-comatose state. An album completed before Cheng‘s accident, titled “Eros”, remains unreleased.
Cheng remains in a semi-comatose state although he has been showing gradual signs of consciousness and recovery for the past year. His replacement on “Diamond Eyes”, Sergio Vega, also plays on the new DEFTONES disc.
DEFTONES debuted a brand new song called “Rosemary” during a private show yesterday afternoon (Friday, July 27) at Warner Bros. Records in Burbank, California. An audio recording of the performance can be streamed in the YouTube clip below.

According to EW.com, DEFTONES has set a tentative October 9 release date for its seventh album.
Regarding the musical direction of the follow-up to 2010′s “Diamond Eyes”, DEFTONES vocalist Chino Moreno said, “Obviously we’re an aggressive band — not the heaviest, but there’s a lot of attack. But there’s also this lush beauty that flows within everything that we do, and that’s my favorite part of the band. To me, it’s the epitome of what the DEFTONES do.”
The CD was once again helmed by Nick Raskulinecz, who produced “Diamond Eyes” and has also worked with FOO FIGHTERS, RUSH, EVANESCENCE and ALICE IN CHAINS. “He’s a very hands-on guy,” Moreno told EW.com. “We adopted a work ethic that was really productive on the last record. We said we were going to work eight hours a day, and since we had those hours, everybody in there was super focused. Before that we had been working up in Sacramento, and the vibe was everybody would come in and hang out and we would work when we got around to it. We had to get more efficient.”
As in the past, DEFTONES will record a handful of covers, some of which will undoubtedly make it various special editions of the new album. “We’ve done a lot of ’80s stuff, but we wanted to do something from farther back,” Moreno explained. “We sat down and everybody had their computers on and were playing songs that we like. So we’re going to do an Elvis Presley song — we have five Elvis songs that we’ve been talking about. And we’re going to do EARTH, WIND, AND FIRE. Hopefully we’ll get at least two, maybe three or four.“
He added, “It’s always fun. We’re done with the real creative part of having to come up with music out of thin air, and now we can be experimental with someone else’s song.“
DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng is showing signs of improvement after being diagnosed with pneumonia, according to a post by his family at the One Love For Chi web site. The bass player, who has been in a semi-comatose state since being injured in a November 2008 car accident, was just brought home after treatment at a recovery center in New Jersey. Cheng has been assisted by mechanical ventilation but the doctors hope to begin weaning him off the breathing machine as soon as today (Monday, June 18).
Cheng had been showing more signs of emerging from his condition over the past few months, although he has still been mostly unable to move or speak.
Much of Cheng‘s treatment at a special facility in New Jersey has been funded by fans and friends, with DEFTONES holding several benefit concerts and donating money from the band’s tours.
DEFTONES are in the studio working on a follow-up to 2010′s “Diamond Eyes”, one of the band’s most successful outings yet. Sergio Vega continues to play bass for the group in Cheng‘s absence.
The family of DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng has revealed that his health has taken a turn for the worse. The musician, who has been receiving special treatments in New Jersey after showing more signs of emerging from a semi-comatose state to a semi-conscious state, over three years since he was gravely injured in a November 2008 car crash, has been diagnosed with pneumonia.
According to postings on the OneLoveForChi.com web site, which was created to help raise funds for Cheng and his medical expenses, Cheng “just got back home last night from NJ and is in ER with SOMETHING serious going on. Pneumonia and don’t know what else. Not good! Please send the word again to PRAY HARD.” A follow-up posting revealed that the bassist was in the intensive care unit and taking three antibiotics to treat the pneumonia. They also stated that his blood pressure and oxygen levels were both low.
P.O.D.‘s Sonny Sandoval also checked in via Twitter after speaking with Chi‘s family. He said, “Spoke with Chi‘s mom. He really needs our prayers. He’s in ICU and still fighting. Gods will be done!”
Cheng required surgery after the car accident to remove part of his brain, but his recovery was strong enough that he was taken off life support seven months later.
Over the course of the past two years, Cheng has emerged from his coma for brief intervals. He opens his eyes and apparently can see and hear things going on around him, but cannot respond verbally.
DEFTONES have held several benefit concerts and continue to donate money from the band’s tours. Singer Chino Moreno said that the group’s fans have continued to help as well. “Whatever people can do, it’s all appreciated, and it’s all just in the hopes that there will be one day where he can talk back and have a conversation and see his kids and, you know, continue on living, you know,” he said. “That’s what we pray and hope for, you know what I mean, that’s all we can do.”
DEFTONES is in the studio working on a follow-up to 2010′s “Diamond Eyes”, one of the band’s most successful outings yet.
Sergio Vega continues to play bass for the band. Vega stepped in for touring purposes after Cheng‘s accident, and stayed on to record “Diamond Eyes” with the group.
SYSTEM OF A DOWN and DEFTONES have posted cryptic messages on thier Twitter accounts, seeming to imply that they will announce a joint tour next week. The SOAD message reads: “Important announcement coming Monday. Stay tuned…” The tweet is accompanied by a picture of SYSTEM bassist Shavo Odadjian holding a DEFTONES all-access pass. Meanwhile, the DEFTONES have posted a photo of their frontman Chino Moreno holding a SYSTEM OF A DOWN tour pass, along with the message, “Announcement coming Monday.”
During an interview with Brazil’s Multishow after SYSTEM OF A DOWN‘s performance at the Rock In Rio festival last October in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, the band’s drummer, John Dolmayan, was asked if SOAD fans can expect to hear a new studio album from the group following its current reunion tour. “We’re gonna take it day by day,” he said. “For the people who are waiting for an album — I know there’s a lot of people waiting for an album; I’m waiting for an album just like they are. It’s gonna happen when it’s right and when we can make something that tops what we’ve done in the past. Because we don’t really wanna rest on our laurels — where what you’ve done in the past is what you depend on. Well, I don’t wanna do that, and I know the rest of the guys don’t wanna do that. Instead of resting on our laurels, we wanna throw them away and create something new and specific for this generation that they can say that’s their SYSTEM OF A DOWN.”
Dolmayan previously told Straight.com about SYSTEM OF A DOWN‘s five-year hiatus, “I personally don’t like breaks — I like to continue playing. But it was nice to go off and be John Dolmayan, as opposed to John from SYSTEM, for a while. I think everybody had similar feelings.”
The drummer explained that a desire to pull off the road for a while and reconnect with their lives is what led SYSTEM to take an extended vacation from each other, saying, “When you’re on the road and in the studio all the time, it’s kind of like traveling at light speed. When you come back, it’s like 20 years have passed by, and you’re only one or two hours older . . . You’re living a nomadic life, and you lose touch with people because they have grown away from you. People get older, get married, die — life is still going on.” Source: Blabbermouth.net
DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno married his girlfriend of two years, Risa Mora, this past Wednesday, March 7 in Hawaii. This is the 38-year-old Moreno‘s third marriage.
Moreno has two sons — Kristian and Jakobi — from his marriage to Celeste Schroeder.
DEFTONES last year began laying the groundwork for its seventh studio release, tentatively due before the end of 2012.
2010′s “Diamond Eyes” has been one of DEFTONES‘ most successful outings. The set’s last single, “You’ve Seen The Butcher”, was a Top 15 rock radio hit.
DEFTONES will once again record with Sergio Vega on bass. Vega stepped in for touring purposes after original bassist Chi Cheng was left in a semi-comatose state by a November 2008 car accident, and stayed on to record “Diamond Eyes” with the group.
