At 11 AM, PST on May 2nd, SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed away near his Southern California home; he was 49 years old. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Vocalist David Draiman (DISTURBED, DEVICE) posted the following message online in the wake of this tragedy:

“There is no room for/excuse for jealousy/contempt/hatred between those who should be supportive/caring brothers and sisters in the world of hard rock and heavy metal. In the wake of the news of the mighty Jeff Hanneman’s tragic passing last night at the Revolver Golden Gods, that point became crystal clear to everyone.

Hardcore, thrash, classic, symphonic, death, grindcore, metalcore, hard rock and any other possible genre/sub-genre you could possibly concieve of, stood united in their grief, and steadfast in their support of the Slayer camp and the Hanneman family. when one of us falls, we are all affected. When a pillar as mighty as Jeff Hanneman falls we are all weakened, and need to be there for one another to console, fondly remember and fortify/strengthen one another, yet again.

We have always come together as a family in such times of sorrow and need, and if something positive can be taken from any of this, it is that we learn from that sense of community and brotherhood that was so prevalent among everyone there last night. All the tastemaker/elitist nonsense, all the trash talking and jealously, truly has no place among hard rock/heavy metal’s artists or its fans.

I pray that there are those out there who will live by this, as I and countless others do. Love all, respect all, protect one and all, in our mighty family.

I am honored and humbled beyond words to have been a part of such a warm display of support and brotherhood as was witnessed last night, I thank all my fellow brothers and sisters in the genre for their compassion shown, and for the humanity shared.

Let Jeff’s memory and last night’s event serve as a symbol, a guiding light, a beacon, to all those who would question our love, devotion, and commitment to one another.

I have been, and forever shall be, a fan of, an addict of, and a champion of, all things hard rock and heavy metal.”

DEVICE is filming video today (Friday, January 11) for “Vilify” with renowned director P.R. Brown, who has previously collaborated with such artists as MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, John Mayer, Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, Prince, AUDIOSLAVE, MÖTLEY CRÜE and SIXX: A.M. DEVICE will also take part in a photo shoot for the new record at the same time.

In addition to Draiman and Lenardo, DEVICE‘s touring lineup will include EVANESCENCE drummer Will Hunt and DOPE lead guitarist Virus.

Special guest musicians on the DEVICE album:

* Terry “Geezer” Butler (BLACK SABBATH)
* Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH, BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION)
* M. Shadows (AVENGED SEVENFOLD)
* Serj Tankian (SYSTEM OF A DOWN)
* Tom Morello (RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE)
* Lzzy Hale (HALESTORM)

Draiman revealed the existence of the project last March, saying it would be in the vein of industrial acts like NINE INCH NAILS and MINISTRY. He later announced that Lenardo was joining the group, although further members’ identities have yet to be unveiled.

DISTURBED went on an open-ended hiatus in 2011, with Draiman saying at the time that all four members wanted some time to pursue other endeavors. “We’ve got other things that each of the band members wanted to pursue individually, outside of DISTURBED,” he said. “There’s other businesses we have, there’s other interests. We’ve got futures hopefully to help cultivate for our families and our children, and they can’t all revolve specifically around DISTURBED.”

DISTURBED has not indicated when it plans to return, although all four members say they’re likely to come back.

Aside from Draiman, DISTURBED bassist John Moyer has branched out recently by joining ADRENALINE MOB, a new group also featuring ex-DREAM THEATER and AVENGED SEVENFOLD drummer Mike Portnoy.

DEVICE is the name of the new collaborative project featuring DISTURBED vocalist David Draiman and former FILTER guitarist Geno Lenardo. The band, which has just launched its official Facebook page at this location, will enter the studio later this week to begin demoing material for its debut release. Draiman previously described the group’s sound as in the vein of industrial acts like NINE INCH NAILS and MINISTRY.

When asked by a fan via Twitter if the project would be anything “like dubstep,” Draiman wrote, “No, it’s about as close to it as [NINE INCH NAILS] or MINISTRY or RAMMSTEIN are. Industrial predates dubstep. . . In other words, it is at all times a guitar-driven sound.”

Lenardo was initially hired as a touring guitarist for FILTER‘s “Short Bus” tour in 1995, then later signed on as a full-fledged member, co-writing tracks on FILTER‘s second album, “Title Of Record” (released in 1999), and the group’s follow-up disc, 2002′s “The Amalgamut”.

Lenardo most recently contributed three songs to the soundtrack to the film “Underworld: Awakening”, including “Heavy Prey” (see video below), which was a collaboration with FLYLEAF singer Lacey Sturm. The CD, which came out in January through Lakeshore Records, sold 3,000 copies in its first week of release to debut at position No. 175 on The Billboard 200 chart.

DISTURBED went on an open-ended hiatus last fall, and although the members of the band expressed interest in working on other endeavors, Draiman told The Pulse Of Radio at the time that he wasn’t sure if he would do a solo project. “I don’t know,” he said. “I’m concerned about that, to be honest. I think too many people have tried and failed. You know, I think that the number of artists that have done it and been successful at it, you can count on one hand, and I would never want to stymie my persona or my growth individually by doing something just for the sake of doing it. If I were going to do something, it would have really have to be something special.”

DISTURBED has not indicated when it plans to return, although all four members say they’re likely to come back.

Aside from Draiman, DISTURBED bassist John Moyer has branched out recently by joining ADRENALINE MOB, a new group also featuring ex-DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy and SYMPHONY X vocalist Russell Allen.

DISTURBED issued a limited-edition box set of all five of its studio albums on vinyl on April 21, Record Store Day, called “The Collection”. The six-disc package includes all the records remastered and pressed on 140-gram heavy duty vinyl, with each housed in new artwork that is unique and exclusive to the box. Only 2,500 copies were made available worldwide.
