Alex Hellid, guitarist Swedish death metal mainstays ENTOMBED has undergone a major operation “which thankfully went very well,” according to a band update. “He is now recovering and looking simultaneously forward to continuing to work with the new Entombed album.”
In June, Screaming Records issued a new Entombed 7″ single, entitled When In Sodom Revisited which featured a cover of the classic KING DIAMOND song ‘Welcome Home’.
Earlier this year Ninetone Records has announced the launch of a new collaboration with Entombed. The band’s 2012 line-up features longtime singer Lars Göran “L.G.” Petrov and guitarist Alex Hellid, alongside guitarist Nico Elgstrand, drummer Olle Dahlstedt and bassist Victor Brandt.
Screaming Records is issuing new, old and borrowed material from none other than the legendary death ‘n’ rollers from Sweden — ENTOMBED.
While putting final touches to their next full-length album, which is slated for a spring 2013 release, the band has chosen to issue two singles; one is a digital release of a reworked version of the song“Amok”, and the other is a limited seven-inch deluxe vinyl single entitled “When In Sodom Revisited”. Due on June 25, the three-track, 70-gram release includes a remixed and remastered version of the original “When In Sodom” track as well as an alternate version composed, performed and recorded by Danish artist and sound designer Klaus “Q” Hedegaard Nielsen (BETA SATAN, THE MALPRACTICE). To round out the seven-inch, ENTOMBED entered the studio to record an honorable version of the KING DIAMOND signature song “Welcome Home“. As a result, this will actually become the first release by ENTOMBED in the current lineup — with Victor Brandt (TOTALT JÄVLA MÖRKER, AEON, SATYRICON) and second guitarist Nico Elgstrand (who previously played bass for the group).
“When In Sodom Revisited” comes as a one-off print of 475 hand-numbered copies on heavyweight silver colored vinyl. The sleeve has been cut extra thick and comes with a 3-mm spine. It will not come with a dropcard and there will not be a digital release.
Yngwie Malmsteen and Alex Hellid (ENTOMBED) are among the artists being honored at SKAP‘s (Svenska Kompositörer Av Populärmusik, The Swedish Society Of Popular Music Composers) annual ceremony this coming Monday, May 28 at Vinterträdgården, Grand Hôtel in Stockholm.
Every year SKAP awards scholarships and prizes to celebrate Swedish creativity across all musical genres. The awards ceremony takes place in tandem with SKAP‘s annual spring party which is organized with the composers in mind and creativity as the main focus. During the event, there are 13 recipients of a scholarship valued at 40,000 SEK (approximately $5,574) each.
SKAP on Malmsteen: “With his unique way of understanding classical music as well as rock n roll, he has written songs that have made him one of the foreground figures — if not THE foreground figure — for an entire genre. The Swedish Society of Popular Music Composers wish to praise an author whose songwriting skills are often overshadowed by his blazing guitar technique.” Source: Blabbermouth.net

In a May 2011 interview with the Stormbringer.at webzine, ENTOMBED guitarist Alex Hellid stated about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the long-awaited follow-up to “Serpent Saints”, “We’re just taking our time getting the pieces together properly this time. We just wanna make sure that it’s a really good album. Now we have a complete lineup again also, and a lot of fresh, new blood as well. So it’s gonna be fun to create something new now. . . We wanna get the group together and get a strong foundation to create something good; that’s the goal here. . . We’ll just concentrate on [creating] something great.”
He added, “I [try not] to focus on too much at the same time. [My attitude] is ‘Let’s just make one great song to start with,’ and then we’ll take it from there. . . We have a pretty broad palette of things we can do, and we’ll try and find a place for anything. ‘Cause we enjoy everything from the fastest death/black metal stuff to whatever, so the songs that we come up with, we’ll just have to find a space for them — some stuff might be [releases as] an album, some stuff might be a single…”
He continued, “I think it’s kind of boring, in a way, to just think in terms of a full-length] ‘album,’ especially when nobody seems to really create classic albums anymore, and a lot of people don’t even buy them anymore. If wanna record our favorite cover songs, there should be a place for that as well.
“It’s been four years [since the last album came out] and I feel that we have so much creativity in the band and so many things that we can all put under this roof of things that we like collectively. And what I wanna do is for us to find a way to channel all our creativity and also make it the best and the greatest it can be.”
