Comments DOWNFALL OF GAIA: “The concept album “Suffocating In The Swarm Of Cranes” is telling a story about a person who falls victim to his thoughts and becomes consumed by the pressures of the outside world. Suffering from insomnia, the day by day routine and the security that things are completely out of control nowadays, all of this puts so much pressure on him that he is slowly losing his mind. It’s a huge story about a person and the sickness, his state of mind and how his psychological conscience develops. This story is representative for a more and more fast moving time such as today where it’s way too easy to lose control and to get buried by the growing weights on our own backs. Compared to our last releases, we’ve got the most mixed style on the new album and it has a lot of dynamic. It’s more aggressive than the other stuff. It still has influences from sludge, black metal, doom, hardcore or post rock parts. It’s a wide range of music which makes all of us feel really comfortable!”

Seeing the big success of their second record “Hisingen Blues”, the band as well as the label decided to re-issue their stunning and nowadays hard-to-find self-titled debut album which gained a lot of attention in the underground on its initial release back in 2007. The album contains all tracks of the original release also featuring the original sound to experience the true and pure essence of GRAVEYARD – even a bit rawer than what you know from their current masterpiece “Hisingen Blues”.
Go, give it a spin and re-discover GRAVEYARD! In stores from Friday on.
Man, have we got a lot of Opeth news for you today! You can pre-order the super-deluxe boxed set version of their new album Heritage. And you can hear the first song from it today, too!
Stereogum.com has the exclusive premiere of “The Devil’s Orchard,” an epic track that gives a major hint as to the change in sound Opeth have undergone on Heritage (hint: more prog, much less death). This is an amazing record, and this track really only scratches the surface of its awesomeness, but here it is, so go check it out.
“An Eye For An Eye”, the first song from THE RESISTANCE, the new Sweden-based metal band featuring former members of IN FLAMES, THE HAUNTED and GRAVE, can be streamed in the YouTube clip below. The track will be made available on the sampler CD that will only be distributed to the subscribers of Sweden’s Close-Up Magazine in the August 2011 issue. In addition to the THE RESISTANCE track, the sampler CD will include contributions from all the other bands that are booked for the magazine’s Close-Up Båten cruise that leaves Stockholm, Sweden on September 8 and returns one day later.
As previously reported, THE RESISTANCE has also been confirmed for the new Sonic Rock Circus festival, set to take place on September 30 at Klubben in Stockholm, Sweden.
Guitarist and band mastermind Oddleif Stensland commented the new stuff:
“I was asked to write a track by track commentary on our new album, but found it to be quite difficult. This is a concept album, based on one specific incident in my life, and splitting it into short comments for each song made no sense right now. It is all dealing with a personal close encounter by death that suddenly came all to close, when someone really close to me passed away way to early. This incident left so many unanswered questions about life and death behind, and all these thoughts and feelings came back to me in form of the words and songs on this album. It is not easy to talk or describe to detailed, but expressing myself through music is easier for me, and it is all written between the lines, so the deeper meaning of the album can be explored by those who feel like it. It is a much darker theme then I have ever done before, and everything is far more personal then I never thought I would be. Writing this album has been like going to a “shrink”, it has been more like therapy session for me, something that I just had to do, no matter what people would think of it in the end. I hope I don’t have to do another album like this again, even dough I love these songs, and the outcome of the album is for me fantastic – it will be a statement in my life forever, and I am proud of my courage to actually go through with this. Those who cares to read the lyrics and put themselves into the situation will get an even deeper album, even dough the songs will work great on their own as well for those who just like to listen so some interesting mind-twisting-metal tunes.”
“Restless”, a brand new song from the Norwegian progressive/avant-garde metal band LEPROUS, can be streamed on the group’s Facebook page (note: you must “like” the band in order to hear the track). The cut comes off the group’s new album, “Bilateral”, which was skillfully mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street studios (OPETH, PAIN OF SALVATION, DEVIN TOWNSEND, SYMPHONY X) in Sweden.
Due on August 22 in Europe and August 23, in North America via InsideOut Music, “Bilateral” “is set to musically redefine what it means to be progressive rock and/or metal, both for the devotees of the genre and the metal fans looking on from a safe distance,” according to a press release.
Commented LEPROUS vocalist/keyboardist Einar Solberg: “‘Restless’ represents ‘Bilateral’ in many ways. It’s complex, but at the same time catchy and plain. Even though it’s one of the shortest songs on the album, I feel it’s flavored with all the things that make LEPROUS special. It has the catchy chorus, it has the groove, it has progish feel and last but not least it has the heaviness.”
“Necropolis Transparent”, the new album from the extreme metal supergroup LOCK UP, is available for streaming in its entirety at AOL Music. Due in North America on July 12 via Nuclear Blast Records, the CD was recorded in November-December 2010 at HVR Studios in Ipswich, United Kingdom and was mixed in January.
“Necropolis Transparent” features guest appearances by HYPOCRISY/PAIN mainman (and one-time LOCK UP vocalist) Peter Tägtgren along with Jeff Walker (CARCASS, BRUJERIA).
Commented LOCK UP bassist Shane Embury: “I always wanted Peter on the third album since he was on the first record LOCK UP we did. It made sense from a weird trilogy aspect to get him on the record. His tones complement [current LOCK UP vocalist] Tomas [Lindberg; also of AT THE GATES] perfectly as well.
“I would have loved to have had Peter sing on more of the songs, but time was short as Peter was heavily involved with his new PAIN record. The songs he did sing on though made them extra special.
“As for Jeff, well me and Jeff go so far back it’s unreal. We were mixing the album at Andy Sneap‘s and I wanted an extra vocal texture on a few tracks to spice it up. My voice is more hardcore and I wanted some extra gravel on things. It all seemed to make sense to Jeff once I had bribed him with a 12 pack of his favorite beer (laughs)!”
“It’s great that LOCK UP is back in the saddle again and that I could be a part of it,” commented Peter Tägtgren. “This album will tear you a new asshole!”
Jeff Walker added: “I think it’s pretty fair to say that the current incarnation of LOCK UP have done the late Jesse Pintado more than proud!”
According to a press release, “the songwriting and production on ['Necropolis Transparent'] surpasses everything the band has done so far. The speed, riffing and intensity make this record more than just a grindcore album and see LOCK UP come into their own true identity.”
