Ultimate-Guitar.com recently spoke with several members of the ESP Guitars administration to discuss the company’s rise to popularity and continued success. The following is an excerpt from an interview with Matt Masciandaro (President and CEO), Jeff Moore (Senior Vice President), Tim Carhart (Artist Relations Manager), Todd Binder (Vice President of Production) and Makoto Suzuki (President of ESP Japan):

UG: In 1985, George Lynch (ex-DOKKEN) had the Kamikaze guitar built – did this start it all?

Matt Masciandaro: “In certain ways, yes. George ordered the Kamikaze while on a 1986 tour of Japan. He heard about ESP necks from his local music store but couldn’t find one, so when he visited ESP in Tokyo they offered to build him a guitar. He had the idea for he Kamikaze in his head for a while so he was ready, and it was delivered to ESP NY a short time later with the paint barely dry. It was not the first custom guitar or first signature series model, but George certainly put ESP on the map as a true guitar hero and as one of the most popular and respected players a that time.

Before George we had some high profile players but not many, with the exception of Ron Wood and mostly NY based players. Since we were based in NYC we had access to the top session players at the time, and we worked with many of them. We received invaluable input from them while being able to provide them with quality customized instruments. Eventually ESPs strengths became our ability to offer quality alternatives to traditional designs, and to build guitars to a player’s own specifications. These remain our primary strengths today.”

UG: Kirk Hammett (METALLICA) is ESP‘s biggest endorser and George Lynch was the first endorsee.

Jeff Moore: “Even though we’ve been working with them for 20 or 30 years as a company, we’re still doing things that are relevant in 2013. With George Lynch we’re introducing a brand new signature model acoustic guitar-actually two models that we just wrapped up.”

UG: Are you doing any new guitars with Kirk Hammett?

Jeff Moore: “We’re working on a very special project with Kirk Hammett. I can’t talk about it right now but it’s relevant to his latest venture, which you’re probably aware of. He just came out with a book (Too Much Horror Business) chronicling his deep history and love of horror. He’s got quite an extensive collection. Of course we’ve done several one-off guitars for him that helped him celebrate his love of horror and let’s just say we’ve got some exciting things to introduce in 2013 along those lines.”

James Wood of GuitarWorld.com recently conducted an interview with legendary guitarist George Lynch (DOKKEN, LYNCH MOB, SOULS OF WE, T&N). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

GuitarWorld.com: What’s the genesis of the T&N project?

George: Initially, Jeff [Pilson] and I were writing for what we thought would be the new LYNCH MOB record, but it turned out not to be a “LYNCH MOB” kind of album. Instead, we decided to turn lemons into lemonade and do our own record. One of things we wanted to do was make a concerted effort to make the connection between our DOKKEN legacy and our newer writing efforts by combining classic DOKKEN songs alongside our newer compositions.

GuitarWorld.com: What was it like revisiting the DOKKEN material again?

George: It was a little surreal recording those songs again with the same guys. It was also a lot of fun. We were so comfortable with the material, having all been playing it on and off for years. We felt that we could liven the music up and bring new life to it.
GuitarWorld.com: Are there plans to tour with T&N?

George: We’re not going to tour together as a band most likely until next fall, upon the release of the second record. The next record is about half done. All of the DOKKEN material has been recorded. We just have to finish writing the new original material.

GuitarWorld.com: What DOKKEN songs can fans expect on the next album?

George: Songs like “When Heaven Comes Down”, “Til The Livin’ End” and “Just Got Lucky”. “Just Got Lucky” actually ended up being insane. The latest plan is to have Sass Jordan, a wonderful Canadian female vocalist, singing it. She has a very soulful and gritty voice. It’s just beautiful. A wonderful rendition of the song.

GuitarWorld.com: What other projects are you working on?

George: Right now, I’m working on a record with the drummer from KORN [Ray Luzier] and the singer from KING’S X [Doug Pinnick]. A still-unnamed project, but we’ve started writing and will be working on that through the middle of December. The other thing that consumes most of my time is my movie project (and band) called “Shadow Train”. We’re doing a lot of filming, playing and working on a soundtrack/record. The film deals with a lot of political and human nature issues and history. I’m working with a lot of really great people, including Mark McLaughlin (a producer from PBS and the Documentary channel) and Vincent Nicastro, who made another Native American themed documentary called “The Blue-Eyed Indian”. There are a lot of guests on it: street poets, political thinkers and speakers. People from the native community including medicine men and shamans. It’s a powerful, nerve-hitting film. We’re all driven by passion.

“Slave To The Empire” contains eight new original songs and four re-recorded classic DOKKEN songs that feature sensational vocal performances by Tim “Ripper” Owens (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH, DIO DISCIPLES), Doug Pinnick (KING’S X), Sebastian Bach (SKID ROW) and Robert Mason (WARRANT, LYNCH MOB). The drum tracks on the new, original compositions were laid down by Brian Tichy (WHITESNAKE, FOREIGNER).

“Slave To The Empire” track listing:

08. Alone Again (feat. Sebastian Bach)
09. Mind Control

In a recent interview with Guitar International, Lynch stated about T&N, “We actually did two records. The first one, which will be released in September, and then the band will go out on the road at the beginning of October. We’ll do a short West Coast tour, then play Loud Park festival in Japan as well as visit a few other Asian cities before heading to Europe for a couple weeks. Then it’s back to the States and we will finish up before Christmas.”

Earlier in the year, T&N was forced to shorten its name from TOOTH AND NAIL for legal reasons. The band stated, “We cannot keep [the name] as TOOTH AND NAIL as there is a label that has it trademarked. [Fans] can still call us TO$%H AND NA$L… We can’t.”

Regarding how T&N came together, Pilson said in an August 2011 interview, “The DOKKEN [original lineup] reunion has been scrapped, and I take a lot of the initial responsibility for that because of my schedule and commitment to FOREIGNER. . . Then George asked me about working with him on the next LYNCH MOB record — and I jumped at the chance. He and I started writing, got into a groove and wrote an album’s worth of stuff, all with the intention of Oni [Logan, LYNCH MOB singer] writing lyrics and it being their next record. Brian Tichy laid down some incredible drums at his studio (and co-wrote some music on one track) and we had an incredibly strong start. Then Oni just wasn’t feeling the music as being LYNCH MOB, so it was shelved. We figured it’d be the start of another LYNCH/PILSON record some day. Then, actually, it was Brian who had the idea that Mick, George and I should do a band, similar to what HEAVEN & HELL was to BLACK SABBATH, and call it TOOTH AND NAIL. Because of everything else we have going, it’ll be just a recording project at first, but sure sounds fun. We’d record the classics keeping true to the originals but make them fresh and organic. Then the idea of doing new songs came up, and it grew from there.”

He added, “I have absolute belief that the music George and I make together (along with Brian Tichy in this case) is real and inspired, and that’s what it’s really all about. So out of a mess of a reunion attempt, I think we’ll end up with a really fabulous record, and what could be better than that?”

When asked if T&N is basically DOKKEN without Don, Pilson said, “Don is, and will always be, the singer of DOKKEN and an invaluable part of the DOKKEN chemistry. No one ever wants to take that away or dispute it one iota. But the three of us do have time tested amazing chemistry, and because we were writers on these songs, I feel we have a lot to express. If anything I think this will be a show of respect for Don, not some kind of competition. I only hope people enjoy it in the spirit for which it’s intended . . . Don’t think of this as DOKKEN without Don… that’s misleading. Think of it as a band with great chemistry coming up with new music that excites them, and also paying tribute to DOKKEN — music which the members all are heavily invested in emotionally.”

In a new interview with GuitarInternational.com’s Robert Cavuoto, George Lynch discusses T&N (formerly known as TOOTH & NAIL), also featuring former DOKKEN members Jeff Pilson, and Mick Brown, and WHITESNAKE drummer/S.U.N. guitarist Brian Tichy. An excerpt from the interview follows:

Q: What is the status of T&N or Tooth & Nail or is it Tooth & Ale?

A: “It’s officially T&N. The record, Slave To The Empire, is being mixed as we speak. We actually did two records. The first one which will be released in September and then the band will go out on the road at the beginning of October. We’ll do a short West coast tour, then play Loud Park Festival in Japan as well as visit a few other Asian cities before heading to Europe for a couple weeks. Then it’s back to the states and we will finish up before Christmas.”

Q: Who will be the drummer on that tour Mick Brown or Brian Tichy?

A: “That hasn’t been decided, as of yet.”

On June 19, Deadline Music/Cleopatra Records will release a special three-disc audio/video deluxe collection of LYNCH MOB‘s “REvolution”. The set features the full-length studio album “REvolution” with killer, supercharged renditions of classic DOKKEN/LYNCH MOB tracks such as “Tooth And Nail”, “Breaking The Chains”, “Wicked Sensation” and more. It also includes professionally filmed live performances recorded during the 2005 “REvolution” tour, mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound.

George “Mr. Scary” Lynch cemented his legendary role in the heavy music community in the early 1980s when he joined forces with Don Dokken. But in 2003, the MOB reassembled to rework DOKKEN and LYNCH MOB material. The result was a decidedly darker, heavier, and very experimental reinvention that fans of all iterations of George Lynch appreciated. They took it on the road for a series of fierce concerts that left audiences jaw-dropped at the band’s creative live presentation

Along with the legendary George Lynch on guitar, this iteration of LYNCH MOB features the return of Robert Mason on vocals after nearly a decade absence, original bassist Anthony Esposito, and Michael Frowein on drums.

RatPack Records has set a May 1 release date for legendary guitarist George Lynch‘s (DOKKEN, LYNCH MOB, T&N, SOULS OF WE) new EP. “Legacy”. This four-song release celebrates thirty years of Lynch‘s guitar playing by “inject[ing] us with a super-charged dose of George‘s signature style and prov[ing] once again why he’s one of the most respected guitar players of the last three decades,” according to a press release. The opening track, “Blood Drive”, ignites this disc with an upbeat catchy feel that is reminiscent of early VAN HALEN and Joe Satriani. “Circulo Del Fuego” is a well-constructed rocker that incorporates all of George‘s legendary playing style. “Invoid” can best be best described as “Mr Scary” meets “Tooth And Nail”, seeing as it’s laced from start to finish with amazing guitar technique and killer tone. The closing cut, “The Road Ahead”, is a haunting ballad-style number that combines all the flavor and melodic angst of the late ’80s but with a modern tone.

“Legacy” is a straight-forward offering with a classic metal vibe and is a must-have for any true fan of this elite guitar legend.

George Lynch (DOKKEN, LYNCH MOB, SOULS OF WE) is a legend among fans of innovative rock guitar. It was 25 years ago, in the late ’80s, that George discovered a small manufacturer of custom guitars while on tour in Japan, and he’s been a believer in ESP ever since. George‘s custom guitars have long been a hallmark for ESP‘s Signature Series. A two-part video overview from ESP can be seen below.

LYNCH MOB‘s comeback album, “Smoke And Mirrors”, was released in Europe on September 18, 2009 (October 13, 2009 in the U.S.) via Frontiers Records. The recording lineup on the CD included Lynch and Logan alongside bassist Marco Mendoza (WHITESNAKE, THIN LIZZY) and Coogan.

Lynch has joined forces with fellow former/current DOKKEN members Jeff Pilson (bass) and Mick Brown (drums) in a new project called TOOTH AND NAIL. The band’s debut album is tentatively due in March. The CD will feature new original material as well as reworked versions of around five or six DOKKEN classics.

Lynch‘s eleventh solo album in nearly twenty years, “Kill All Control”, was released last July via Rocket Science, Inc.

What began as a follow-up to the SOULS OF WE debut, “Let The Truth Be Known”, George quickly realized the project was taking on a new direction with the addition of POWERMAN 5000 drummer Adrian Ost. While writing with SOULS OF WE singer London LeGrand (BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION), George noted, “The creative juices flowed and we wrote most of the CD in 10 days.”
