Metal-Rules.com’s Marko Syrjala has posted a new interview conducted with HELLOWEEN guitarist Michael Weikath. The following is an excerpt from the interview:
Q: In your opinion, what is the classic lineup of HELLOWEEN?
A: “The classic lineup—that’s the one with Michael Kiske and Ingo (Schwichtenberg, drums) and (Kai) Hansen. That’s a time… that’s something that time passed by. Now we’re in the present and that’s what we do to make a good living and whatever. You know, the new lineup has its advantages and the old classic one had its disadvantages. Actually, it wasn’t an easy life. I mean, you hear the complaints about me and what kind of asshole and dictator I was or whatever… and the people who say that, they know themselves that it’s not true if they really reflect. They know what was going on back then and it’s actually just easy to put the blame just on me.”
Q: Yeah, but everybody has their own side of the story.
A: “It could have all been so cool if not for the fucking bikers around and it could have been so cool if I wouldn’t have been around because then I wouldn’t have had to have that entire struggle that was going on. For me what counts is that you have a great act that works and functions and is looked upon by the people as something important or great or something and that is indispensable. Because you can do so many bands which are not really necessary. Then you can go and say hmm or whatever.”
Q: Would I dare to ask that how is your relationship with Roland Grapow on these days?

The lineup for this summer’s edition of the Graspop Metal Meeting(28-29-30 June 2013) is really shaping up now with the addition of another seven bands. The newcomers are Helloween, W.A.S.P., Prong, All That Remains, Tankard, Newsted and Love And Death.
A small change to our day schedules: Heaven Shall Burn has been moved up from Saturday 29 June to Friday 28 June.
In September 2012, W.A.S.P. celebrated the 30th anniversary of their first ever show in LA by kicking off their ’30 Years of Thunder’ world tour, which will also bring them to Dessel this summer. The band around figurehead Blackie Lawless, now the only remaining founding member, was particularly successful in the early years. Thanks to their self-titled 1984 debut ‘W.A.S.P.’ and the hit single ‘I Wanna Be Somebody’, their career took off like a comet and despite numerous lineup changes the band never lost its drive and identity. The upcoming tour offers an overview of W.A.S.P.’s 30 years in the business and promises to be the greatest W.A.S.P. show ever.
For German metallers Helloween, the release of their brand-new studio ‘Straight Out of Hell’ was the perfect excuse to embark on yet another world tour, entitled ‘Hellish Rock Part II’. The new release is actually one of their top selling albums to date. Helloween has always been extremely popular in mainland Europe and Japan but they are also a crowd favourite at festivals worldwide because they know how to throw one hell of a metal party!
Metallica at Graspop Metal Meeting? Well, no, not this year but who knows? Still, Jason Newsted represents a big chunk of Metallica history and our loyal Graspoppers will be more than happy to get reacquainted. Jason has kept busy since his departure from the biggest band of the Big Four but now he’s back with a new project. The new band is simply called Newsted and their classic metal has that typical Jason touch so expect a pinch of doom, a dash of punk and, above all, raw Newsted vocals. The prodigal son is back so don’t miss it…
Some acts are simply larger than life. Whether it’s personnel changes, declining CD sales or a worldwide economic crisis, nothing gets in the way of true rockers and their calling. A fine example of this dying breed is Tommy Victor, the brains behind Prong. Prong first came to the fore in the late 80s with their excellent debut ‘Force Fed’. Successful bands like Korn and Nine Inch Nails still quote Prong as a major influence on their music. During the 90s, Prong became one of the top acts of the alternative scene.
Eight years ago, Brian ‘Head’ Welch left the American metal band Korn to dedicate himself to the Lord Jesus Christ. He’s kept a low profile ever since but now he’s back with a new project called Love and Death and GMM was quick to invite them over for an introduction. Be sure to check out their debut album, ‘Between Here and Lost’. There’s quite a bit of Korn in there, so if you’re a fan…

In a new interview with Anthony Morgan at Metal Forces Magazine, HELLOWEEN frontman Andi Deris revealed that he’s currently working on his third solo album. An excerpt from the story is available below:
“I hope to be ready somewhere in May or June, and take it from there,” he reveals. “I will probably release it through JVC in Asia, and probably through Edel Music in the rest of the world. We just finished the drums. They sound great, but drums don’t make a record. I know that the ideas are very good. It’s much harder than you would expect from an Andi Deris solo album, but it’s not SLIPKNOT or something like that. It’s somewhere in between (laughs). I would describe it as hard rock meets metal or metal meets hard rock, any way you can turn and twist it (laughs). The truth is somewhere in the middle. It’s modern hard rock with metal influences.”
Other musical influences might be on the cards, perhaps. “This is something you have to ask me when it’s finished,” Andi cautions. “We’re still in the recording process, and there are probably lots of spices we will add or maybe some things that we’ll take away again. I would rather describe it as modern sounding but evergreen hard rock / metal though, so there are lots of catchy refrains and stuff like that, and lots of things to sing along to definitely. There’s no speed metal stuff on it, but it’s rather heavy.”
The resultant lyrics will be of a more personal nature. “Very personal,” the wordsmith underlines. “There’s a lot of bitching and a lot of aggression that I’ve built up during the last few years concerning politics and systems, but it’s all in great stories I think, and I think everybody will nod. There’s a lot of filthy mouth stuff on it which makes it fun to sing along to, but it’s very aggressive lyrically.”
The solo endeavour’s working title is Million-Dollar Haircuts On Ten-Cent Heads. “As the name suggests, it’s all about those idiots who actually just work without moral ethics and are just corrupt,” Andi complains. “They just work for their own pockets, and don’t ask about people down there who are actually suffering, and take away money which is obviously lacking down there. That’s probably the reason why we have more poorer people, and more richer people.”
The official video for the first single is the six-minute opus for ‘Nabataea’ which develops on several levels, including 3-D animation at motion picture level. The legendary kingdom Nabataea provides the atmospherically dense reference for the strong first release from Helloween’s new album. Check it out below:
