DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan and drummer Ian Paice took part in a press conference on Thursday April 18 in Paris, France. You can now watch video footage of the entire question-and-answer session below.

After various songwriting sessions in Europe, the band recorded and mixed the album in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, PINK FLOYD, PETER GABRIEL, ALICE COOPER, KANSAS). The CD contain 11 tracks, including “Out Of Hand”, “Weirdistan”, “Uncommon Man” and “Above And Beyond”. The latter song references the band’s late keyboard player, Jon Lord, in the lyric “Souls having touched are forever entwined.”
According to a press release, “Now What?!” was recorded with no musical rules… and it shows a modern and fresh production… to the point that DEEP PURPLE have never sounded so close to the spirit of the ’70s in the last 20 years as they do now. The CD has the excellence and elegance of “Perfect Strangers” and the wild freedom of “Made In Japan”.
Leslie Wilson Jr. of GulfNews.com‘s Tabloid! recently conducted an interview with DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
GulfNews.com: How do you keep up the enthusiasm and energy over the tours and the years? What’s the secret?
Gillan: Well, I don’t really know. We never planned this far ahead. Possibly it’s the way we set ourselves up in the beginning. We had no ambition, except to make the band as good as possible. Every street where I lived in the south of England had a band, so you try and steal the guitar player or the drummer from the band in the next street, just to improve your own band and all we cared about was just playing music that we loved. We didn’t give much thought to image. In fact, we don’t have a publicist — never had one — and we never [gave] thought to the normal business things. So there’s a basic simplicity to the ethos of the band which has survived and I don’t think it’s changed in any way. The music’s kinda matured with us — it’s grown up a little bit, I suppose — but it’s still got all the energy and enthusiasm that we had as kids. Apart from that, I couldn’t answer your question because I’m too close to it. All I know is that it’s full of energy and we still love it.
GulfNews.com: You have been screaming rock music for over 40 years. How do you do it?
Gillan: I think it’s quite natural, I do a lot of it, and so I keep myself fairly fit. My mates who were singers they quit to enjoy their success or raise families and they didn’t continue. Then they tried to come back years later but it was very difficult because vocal cords, unlike guitar strings, are unforgiving, you can’t change them. So I think I’ve been singing all my life, and therefore I’m pretty match-fit, so to speak. Most things are within my scope, I sing pretty naturally so it’s not a strain, never has been.
GulfNews.com: Befitting the success DEEP PURPLE has achieved, the band has been nominated for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. How much of an honor is this, or is it?
Gillan: [laughs] Without being asked, I was nominated for an MBE a little while ago and I was a bit fed up with these sorts of things and then I rationalized the situation. When I was a kid, the last thing that I wanted was to be institutionalized and sort of fought against the establishment all my life. However, when I had a chance to think about the nomination, I realized I saw people getting excited about it around me and I realized it’s for family and friends and it’s not for me alone, it’s for the people who have supported us all through these years, particularly through the bad times. So I look at it in a different way now, with a certain amount of humility.
DEEP PURPLE‘s Ian Gillan and BLACK SABBATH‘s Tony Iommi took everybody by surprise in 2011 by releasing a charity single: ‘Out Of My Mind’, renewing the collaboration that led the pair recording the Black Sabbath album Born Again in 1984. None other than Jason Newsted (METALLICA), Jon Lord (ex-Deep Purple), Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN) and Linde Lindström (H.I.M.) supported the two rock legends.
Not only jamming together for the shear fun of things, this new project has united for a cause – rebuilding and helping the music school in Gyumari, Armenia. The single was a joyful and inspired moment. Iommi and Gillan then decided to make WhoCares an album for their devoted fans. Classic songs and a lot of rarities and unreleased material in two-CDs of fantastic rare music. This is much more than a Gillan solo album or a Deep Purple anthology – this is a real collector’s item and must have for every Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi fan.
The album was released in Europe on July 13th, and will now be available in North America on August 28th.

DEEP PURPLE‘s Ian Gillan and BLACK SABBATH‘s Tony Iommi took everybody by surprise in 2011 by releasing a charity single, “Out Of My Mind”, renewing the collaboration that led the pair to record an album in 1984, “Born Again”, under the BLACK SABBATH moniker. For the occasion, the two rock legends called a few friends and were soon joined by Jason Newsted (METALLICA, VOIVOD, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM), Jon Lord (DEEP PURPLE) and Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN). Not only jamming together for the sheer fun of things, this new project has united for a cause — rebuilding and helping the music school in Gyumari, Armenia. The single was a joyful and inspired moment. Iommi and Gillan have now decided to make WHOCARES an album for their devoted fans. Classic songs and a lot of rarities and unreleased material in two CDs of fantastic rare music.
The single was a joyful and inspired moment. The spark to bring Iommi and Gillan in a studio, together again was to finance the rebuilding of a music school in Armenia they had visited together on various occasions in past years.
Far from being a spectacular charity project, WHOCARES was a nice gesture, done with class, from two musicians with nothing to prove, willing to support music, where music is considered a luxury.
“As I said once in the song ‘Razzle Dazzle’ (DEEP PURPLE‘s ‘Bananas’ album), ‘It’s a real fine line between an orgy of destruction and a wonderful time,’” Gillan tells PanArmenian.net about the forthcoming CD. “The destruction of conformity in this case: Some of these pieces never really fitted into their contemporary program and got side-lined or forgotten, and some of the album tracks never had much exposure. As the track listing for this album came together, I noticed many of the titles had character similarities; a combination of freshness as they finally felt the sun on their backs and rebellion in a ‘yeah told you so’ kind of way. And that adds up to a wonderful time. And that adds up to more money for the music school we are building in Armenia.”
“And what about WHOCARES… this ad-hoc benefit band put together by Tony Iommi and myself on a flight home from Yerevan, where we’d been deeply humbled by the honors and expectations bestowed upon us. Well that’s it really, in a nutshell, so to speak, what more can I say; it’s all there in the music.”
Among the tracks set to appear on the upcoming album are the two original WHOCARES songs; DEEP PURPLE‘s unreleased studio jam “Dick Pimple”; a song from REPO DEPO (a band Ian Gillan formed before the DEEP PURPLE reunion which never released any material); two previously unreleased songs from Tony Iommi featuring Glenn Hughes; obscure collaborations, B-sides lost on seven-inch vinyl; and exclusive live versions recorded live on radio.
The album is set for release on July 13 via earMUSIC..
