Interview with Teräsbetoni – J.Ahola: …As Medieval Warriors Going Off To Battle

Teräsbetoni (English: Reinforced Concrete) is a Finnish heavy metal band. Their first album, Metallitotuus (trans. “Metal Truth”), was released in 2005 and has so far sold more than 32,000 copies. Teräsbetoni has been strongly influenced by bands such as Manowar.

The band is visually very strong and their epic music conjures up images of medieval warriors going off to battle (the band’s description for live performances), with lyrics often including themes such as brotherhood, truth, honour and glory. The style has received mixed reception. Band members themselves have said that they are not dead serious about the band’s mentality and are having fun with it.The most famous songs of the band include “Taivas lyö tulta”, “Vaadimme metallia” and their Eurovision entry “Missä miehet ratsastaa”. Teräsbetoni are Jarkko Ahola – lead vocals, bass * Arto Järvinen – guitar, vocals * Viljo Rantanen – guitar  * Jari Kuokkanen – drums.

J. Ahola is the vocalist, bass player and one of three songwriters for Teräsbetoni.  J.’s deep passion for music has resulted in his venturing outside the structure of the band and participating in other successful projects like Northern Kings and Raskasta Joulua.

Ongoing Raskasta Joulua -Tour, Next Tour Dates

Raskas Joulu (Heavy Christmas) — a Finnish project which celebrates Christmas and its music tradition mixed with metal — is touring now and having souldout concerts all over Finland.

Taking part in this year’s event are the following musicians:

Marco Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot, Northern Kings), Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica, Northern Kings), J. Ahola (Teräsbetoni, Northern Kings), JP Leppäluoto (Charon, Harmaja,Northern Kings), Tommi ”Tuple” Salmela (Tarot), Ari Koivunen (Solo, Amoral), Ilja Jalkanen (Kiuas,Solo) and Antony Parviainen (Machine Men). Soloists vary by location.

In Raskas Joulu -band are playing the “old familiars”: Erkka Korhonen (Artistic Director and a solo guitarist), Vili Ollila (keyboardist), Erkki Silvennoinen (bassist), Tuomas Wäinölä (rhythm guitar) as well as a new member Twist Twist Erkinharju (Peer Günt, Leningrad Cowboys, Los Bastardos Finlandeses) in drums.

J.Ahola: The Forthcoming Releases

J.Ahola, the vocalist, bass player and one of three songwriters for the successful Finnish heavy metal band, Teräsbetoni has issued the following update on his myspace page:

“Hi guys! Here’s what’s going on right now:
I sang one track on Pispalassa jytää-album (“Hengitä sisko”), that contains songs of Coitus Int. and Juice Leskinen. The CD will be released in 20.10.2010 – meaning this wednesday! You can hear other artists like Pauli Hanhiniemi (Kolmas Nainen), Heikki Salo (Miljoonasade), Pate Mustajärvi (Popeda), Olli Lindholm (Yö), Heikki Silvennoinen (Kummeli), Mikko Alatalo & Erja Lyytinen. The profit of the CD will be donated to the Federation Of Mother And Child Homes & Shelters.  So, we are on a good mission here. You can buy the CD and be a part of this donation.

“Oulu All Star Big Band & J.Ahola-album will be released this month as well. The exact day is 29th of October.  The album is a cool mixture of mostly old heavy and hard rock songs arranged for a big band – a jazzy one. It’s bravely mixed thinking today’s standards of sound: no tuning, no effects, no super polishing – just the band and the vocals. The track list is as follows:  Easy Livin‘ (Uriah Heep), Stand Up And Shout (Dio), Heart Of Steel (Manowar), Show Must Go On (Queen), Heaven And Hell (Black Sabbath), Long Live Rock’n’Roll (Rainbow), Burn (Deep Purple), I Was Made For Lovin’ You (Kiss), Run To The Hills (Iron Maiden) & Vaadimme Metallia (Teräsbetoni).  Check this one out!
