“Traveller”, the new video from Norwegian hard rock singer Jorn Lande, can be seen below. The song is the title track of Lande‘s new album, which will be released on June 11 in North America and June 14 in Europe via Frontiers Records.

Considered one of the greatest legends in rock, and by many as the best male rock singer of the millennium, Lande never seems to stop producing music, and is back with yet another slab of classic first-division heavy rock. “Traveller” is definitely a suitable title to fit this gifted and creative viking’s extreme productivity.

During his almost-30-year-long career, his albums have sold millions. He managed to release close to 40 albums with various bands/projects in the past decades, and “Traveller” is his eighth studio album under the Jorn banner. Some say he has passed his successors by his gift of being versatile, and ability to not get stuck in the political frames of the music business. A true independent “freebird” hammering his legacy in stone as he goes, with a band of grounded and solid craftsmen to back up his hurricane force voice.

This album represents the first product of the pairing of Jorn Lande and the new JORN guitarist Trond Holter (WIG WAM, DREAM POLICE). The result is eleven new songs encompassing a variety of moods and styles, with Lande‘s voice shining through memorable anthems, backed by wonderful grooves and tightly-executed classic and melodic heavy metal. “This album has all the elements of the Jorn legacy,” says Lande. “It is heavy, but still very melodic and experimental, and it really rocks! As usual we haven’t spent much time analyzing the material before recording it, this is an album about life, doom and death reflecting on what I know and thoughts about what I don’t.”

“Traveller” track listing:

01. Overload
02. Cancer Demon
03. Traveller
04. Window Maker
05. Make Your Engine Scream
06. Legend Man
07. Carry The Black
08. Rev On
09. Monsoon
10. The Man Who Was King

You can sample four songs from the album in the YouTube clip below.

Anthony Morgan of Metal Forces recently conducted an interview with Norwegian powerhouse vocalist Jørn Lande. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On latest JORN album, “Symphonic”:

Jørn: “‘I Came To Rock’ [from 2012's 'Bring Heavy Rock To The Land'] was something I thought would be cool to add some strings to, and so we tried. Some songs really invite you to make an orchestral arrangement. I just felt that songs like ‘I Came To Rock’ were perfect for that. Even without any keyboards or anything on the original version, it still feels like it could be something more bombastic, and that’s how I got the idea. With other tracks like ‘Behind The Clown’ [from 2004's 'Out To Every Nation'] for example — which is an older JORN track — it’s an era which was kind of a more experimental time, an era when I experimented more with various musical landscapes. That song was also a candidate. It wasn’t a typical song for a JORN album, because it was more like a ballad. I used to enjoy the wonderful Kate Bush a lot when I grew up, which is a big contrast to the heavy rock and metal I do today or perform today.

“Yeah, the rest is history, basically. It turned out great, and a friend of mine who’s very clever with arranging these things helped me out. I talked to my label and they liked the idea, too, to select a few other songs. We didn’t want to do a ‘best-of’ release, because some of the songs don’t fit that well with an orchestra anyway. You could say that I wanted to bring some diversity to the album, and also to bring some of these songs to the surface. We tried to choose some of the more rare tracks, tracks that might be forgotten or are on later albums. Usually people remember the video songs, singles and stuff. So yeah, they deserve a second chance. That’s basically how it started.”

On the birth of heavy metal:

Jørn: “In the early ’70s, there weren’t really any metal bands. Maybe there was something called heavy metal that was similar to heavy metal. Some people say that heavy metal started with bands like LED ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH, but I think that heavy metal started in the late ’70s to early ’80s with bands like JUDAS PRIEST and IRON MAIDEN. I think before that was hard rock, and experimental rock. Distorted guitars weren’t really distorted either, so that way of playing and being able to get the heavy metal sound right was one that evolved in the late ’70s. Just listen to what Eddie Van Halen [VAN HALEN] did with the guitar when he first started playing — his playing was something totally new. At one time the guitarist in BOSTON [Tom Scholz] invented something called the Rockman, which was a small, little box that made a certain sound. It was distorted; it wasn’t too thick and big, but it had this kind of crunchy, great feel and sound. I think that’s when guitarists were able to play faster, and could really do more on a technical level.

“I think before, in the early ’70s, when I was a kid, nobody heard about something called heavy metal. Not even heavy rock, or hard rock. It was just rock music. DEEP PURPLE was rock music, URIAH HEEP was rock music. NAZARETH, SLADE, SWEET; it was all rock music. It wasn’t separated, at least where I come from. I don’t know about the U.K., but people didn’t really separate the styles in the same way. It wasn’t like today with thousands of genres and subgenres, like soft metal, nu-metal, black metal, nu-black metal, thrash metal, speed metal. I don’t even know all of the names, but some of them I’ve learnt along the way. [laughs] I don’t even know all of the styles that are supposed to have been invented in the last ten, 20 years. I prefer to say that even BLACK SABBATH was heavy rock music, but I don’t think the word ‘heavy’ was really a term that was used back then. Maybe some did, but it definitely wasn’t a common way of addressing BLACK SABBATH.”

On the timing of the release of “Dio” in 2010, a tribute album to the late Ronnie James Dio [BLACK SABBATH, DIO, RAINBOW]:

Jørn: “It definitely wasn’t the best time to release the album, but some of the tracks on that album were from 2007 and the rest were from 2009. It wasn’t the best thing that happened, that the album came out so soon after Ronnie‘s passing. Then again, a lot of tributes were made afterwards. I think it was obvious that many of these tributes were really done because people wanted to benefit from what had happened. I think when we evaluated the situation, since the release had already been scheduled for a long time… I spoke to my record company, and we agreed that it was better to release the album as planned rather than wait four months, and then release it. It isn’t possible to make an album like that… If you know the album, you know how it sounds and everything. It isn’t possible to have a production like that in a month, or a few weeks.”

On the departure of guitarist Tore Moren and bassist Nic Angileri, and the arrival of new JORN members Trond Holter [guitars] and Bernt Jansen [bass]:

Jørn: “Tore always wanted to do something on his own, and there were also some discussions and conflict in the band. We had been playing together for many, many years. I guess we just had a different view on things, on how to continue. He basically left himself, which I guess was the result of our disagreements. Nobody got fired or anything from the band; it was his own wish to leave, based on our discussions. In the last couple of years we’ve been talking about the direction of the band and how to work and how to do things, even if it was in a live touring context, or if it was how to make an album, how to write, and what to do with certain things within this band. I guess that’s why.

“When we had a new guitarist, we had a bass player living nearby where I live, a really talented one. They were good friends, and he showed up at rehearsals together with the new guitar player. In the end, we just had to find out what to do. It really worked well. I think Nic played great on the album that he did last year with us; he played great on the tours and all the shows that he did, and he’s a great guy. It’s just we felt that it would work much better in the big picture to also include a new bass player, so we sat down to talk to Nic. Yeah, of course, it’s one of those things that sometimes you don’t like to do, talking to people about certain things and then telling people that it’s not gonna work anymore. I don’t like to beat around the bush; I like to be frank with these things.”

On his forthcoming studio album:

Jørn: “It’s less experimental than some of the earlier albums. I think the last couple of albums or three have been a development towards a more classic-rock-oriented sound, moving back to where we came from. Like I mentioned earlier, the experimentation is something which belongs in the past right now. I don’t feel that the most important thing is to try to reinvent the wheel or something, and try to discover new musical aspects of myself. I think what I need to do now is to really find the best recipe for the band. Where are we at our best? When do I perform at my best? In what type of style? Is it the simple rock music that we grew up with? I think we discovered that by not trying to go out of where we came from, and not trying to do something new… Which isn’t really possible, but I think that many bands desperately try to be original and to claim that they discovered something new.”

Audio samples of all the songs that will appear on “Symphonic”, the very special album from Norwegian hard rock singer Jorn Lande, can be streamed at MelodicRock.com. The CD will be released on January 25 in Europe and January 22 in North America via Frontiers Records.

JornLande_cd

“Symphonic” is not a proper new album, but rather a selection of tracks taken from Jorn‘s previous studio releases, which have been carefully selected by the Norwegian singer himself and painstakingly remixed in order to add a grandiose classical orchestra arrangement to the existing hard rock structure.

“I didn’t want to choose the most obvious Jorn songs, as I didn’t want this album to come out as a typical ‘best-of’ release,” explains the former MASTERPLAN frontman. “Some songs that are not too typical in a Jorn context, were chosen simply because some great songs often tend to be forgotten and therefore deserve a second chance.”

Tracks like “I Came to Rock”, “Burn Your Flame” and “Behind The Clown” are presented in a very intriguing and different new dressing, which enhances the variety and depth of Jorn‘s classic songwriting and performance style. In Jorn‘s words: “‘I Came To Rock’ might now even remind the listener of a Broadway musical, not coming from a heavy rock band like Jorn. The new version of ‘Behind The Clown’ shows how much as a young boy I have been fascinated by Kate Bush. ‘Burn Your Flame’ instead came out really fresh and different, compared to the original version on ‘Spirit Black’ from 2009.” “Symphonic” also includes a previously unreleased track: a cover version of DIO‘s “Rock And Roll Children”.

“I hope you will enjoy the album and maybe you will even rediscover some songs you had forgotten…” concludes Jorn.

“Symphonic” track listing:

01. I Came To Rock
02. Rock And Roll Children
03. The World I See
04. Burn Your Flame
05. Man Of The Dark
06. My Road
07. Time To Be King
08. Black Morning
09. Like Stone In Water
10. Vision Eyes
11. War Of The World
12. Behind The Clown
13. A Thousand Cuts
14. The Mob Rules

The Theatre – Rozzano (Italy), 5th december 2012

JornMilanoPoster

by Marcello Catozzi

It was a cold winter night when we arrived at The Theatre of Rozzano, a nice venue, perfect for gigs, in the neighborhood of Milano. Saverio (the kind guy from the Eagle Booking Agency) welcomes us just as the Italian band FROM THE DEPTH is finishing playing.

After a short while the Norwegian TEODOR TUFF hits the stage, suddenly providing a rocky sound. The people raise up their hands, invited by the headbanging of Rayner Haroy, the bass player. The singer shows a clean and strong voice, able to reach very high octaves.

The line-up of this 2012 tour is: vocals: Terje Haroy, guitar: Christer Haroy, guitar: Knut Lysklaett, bass: Rayner Haroy,
drums: Knut Hellem. The band comes from the North and performs  rude scandinavian power metal, with some melodic ingredients:  hard and heavy timing of the rhythmic basement (thanks to Knut Hellem / Rayner Haroy) mixed with the melody of voice and guitars are the characteristic of this young “family band”.

Here is the setlist of the songs, some of them being on the last CD “Soliloquy”:
LAST SUPPER
DENG’S DICTUM
ADDICTION
REDEEMED
TOWER OF POWER
STRANGER

After Teodor Tuff, the time is coming. The technicians are moving fast on the stage, preparing for the headliners: in the dark we can see the shapes of the musicians, while tunes of the intro are rising through the smoky air. Here we go with “Road of the cross” (from Spirit Black”). A sprint starting, with a terrible wall of sounds that invades the ears of the audience with violence, but this is just the spirit of the band (Spirit Black?).

Here is the new line-up after the last change: vocals: Jorn Lände, guitar: Trond Holter, guitar: Jimmy Iversen, bass: Bernt Jansen, drum: Willy Bendiksen

To see Jorn on stage again four years after the last gig in Italy is emotional to all the people, above all to the fans on the front row, who show all their love to the legendary vocalist. The beginning is very strong, the song is powerful and pumped with high volume. Unfortunately, the balance of the sound could be much better….. But the most important thing, in this situation, is Jorn’s voice, as usual, strong and powerful, penetrating the minds of all the rockers.

Jorn_stage

Then we have some tracks from the past, such as as “Shadow People” and “Below”, with which we can understand that the viking will take no prisoners tonight. Next is “Bring Heavy Rock to the Land” (the title track of the last album) the audience join in to form a nice duet with the frontman. Introducing “Time to be King” (Masterplan tribute) Jorn expresses his admiration for that band.

After “The inner road” the drum solo comes, full of strength and energy, by Willy Bendiksen, old fellow of many battles. The heavy “Black song” introduces a fantastic guitar-solo of Trond Holter, new entry who deserves all the respect: a good surprise for everybody. The performance of this blond giant is simply pyrotechnic, with fast scales in a typical “northern style” where technique and speed are mixed together for the happiness of the fans. During the final part of the solo the rest of the band comes again and joins Trond in an exploding ending.

Let’s carry on with the wonderful “We brought the angels down”, where the audience duets with Jorn, whose voice is in incredibile shape. With “I came to rock” the band says goodbye, but after some minutes there is an encore that shakes the walls of the Theatre with a couple of killer songs such as: “Lonely are the brave” and “War of the world”. At this point the show is over, and all the people are satisfied with the performance of this inoxidable Viking hero.

Jorn_setlist

The complete setlist is as follows:

ROAD OF THE CROSS (“Spirit Black”)
SHADOW PEOPLE (“Lonely are the brave”)
BELOW (“Spirit Black”)
WORLD GONE MAD (“Spirit Black”)
BRING HEAVY ROCK TO THE LAND (“Bring Heavy Rock to the Land”)
TIME TO BE KING (Masterplan cover)
MAN OF THE DARK (“Lonely are the brave”)
THE INNER ROAD (“Lonely are the brave”)
Drum solo
BLACK SONG (“The Duke”)
Guitar solo
WE BROUGHT THE ANGELS DOWN (“The Duke”)
I CAME TO ROCK (“Bring Heavy Rock to the Land”)
Encore:
LONELY ARE THE BRAVE (“Lonely are the brave”)
WAR OF THE WORLD (“Lonely are the brave”)

Listening to the comments of the lucky people who were at the show tonight, we can say it has been a total success, without any doubt. The Norwegian team won the match and the glorious captain, Jorn Lände showed a great performance once again, as well as his musicians, in spite of the low quality of the sound.

Anyway, we feel fine after all this good old Rock; the only downside is for the lack of people, because the artists deserved much more, although we know very well that it’s a hard time for this kind of music. But we are proud to sing loud: “I came to Rock”!

Jorn

Frontiers Records will the release of the brand new studio album from Norwegian powerhouse vocalist Jorn Lande (MASTERPLAN, AVANTASIA), “Bring Heavy Rock To The Land”, on June 1 in Europe and June 5 in North America.

Following a three-year silence since the release of “Spirit Black”, Jorn unleashes upon the world yet another slab of classic hard rock with metal elements.

“I think this album follows a similar Jorn tradition like those before, more heavy rock oriented than metal,” says Jorn. “But, as usual, it’s not one musical expression all the way through the album, but a variety of musical landscapes within the categories of rock and metal.”

A winning formula should not change, so Jorn has again worked with Tommy Hansen at Jailhouse Studios in Denmark, who mixed the album, ensuring the right edge to the rich guitar and vocal sound that is now trademark to all JORN releases. The lineup sees the return of Jimmy Iversen on guitar who also appeared on “Spirit Black”. The pairing with Tore Moren works really well and gives Jorn‘s sound the usual depth and solidity.

As usual, in addition to the original material, Jorn offers some interesting covers. This time, MASTERPLAN‘s “Time to Be King” and Christopher Cross“Ride Like The Wind” are the ones to get the Jorn treatment.

“When we wrote ‘Time To Be King’, I heard a different and more rock-oriented arrangement in my mind,” says Jorn, “so after the MASTERPLAN album was released, I couldn’t stop thinking about how it would sound if it was recorded with this other arrangement. I don’t know which one’s better, I have ended up liking both versions. As for Christopher Cross, I have always loved ‘West Coast’-oriented music and bands like 10CC, PAGES, SANTANA, LITTLE RIVER BAND, EAGLES and so on. So I thought ‘Ride Like The Wind’ would be a good song to do Jorn style. SAXON also released a version of this song in the ’80s, and the arrangement we made ended up beeing a mix between the original version and SAXON‘s. It’s also a fun song to sing and play.”

Jorn Lande‘s strong and diverse voice and solid songwriting skills have now become legendary in the hard rock world. In a career spanning over close to 40 album releases, as frontman for ARK and MASTERPLAN, in addition to featuring on spectacular projects such as NOSTRADAMUS “The Rock Opera”, BEYOND TWILIGHT “The Devil’s Hall of Fame”, Tobias Sammet‘s AVANTASIA and AYREON.

“If you buy a Jorn album today, you know what you will get,” states Jorn Lande. You are guaranteed to get your adrenaline going with the riveting sound that has solid roots in classic hard rock/heavy metal music, such as DIO, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW and WHITESNAKE.

“Bring Heavy Rock To The Land” track listing:

01. My Road
02. Bring Heavy Rock To The Land
03. A Thousand Cuts
04. Ride Like The Wind
05. Chains Around You
06. The World I See
07. Time To Be King
08. Ride To The Guns
09. Black Morning
10. I Came To Rock
11. Live And Let Fly (bonus track)

The title track, “Bring Heavy Rock To The Land”, will be released as a single worldwide on May 14. A video for the song is in the works and will be directed by Thomas Tjäder (PRETTY MAIDS, IN FLAMES). Jorn says, “The title track has really a strong Jorn trademark. It was a natural choice for a title track, I felt the same about ‘Lonely Are The Brave’ back in 2008. Sometimes one song’s got the magic and you just know it. ‘Bring Heavy Rock To The Land’ is such a song and regardless of how the whole album is evaluated by critics, I feel that this song will live on and become an essential Jorn classic!”

Jorn will appear live at select shows in Europe during the summer. Source: Blabbermouth.net

Vocalist AMANDA SOMERVILLE recently released her first full-on metal solo album, Alloy, under the TRILLIUM moniker. She discusses the project in a new interview on Rich Davenport’s Rock Show via the audio player below starteing at the 23 minute mark:

Rich Davenport’s Rock Show – Amanda Somerville/Trillium Interview by Rich Davenport on Mixcloud

An excerpt from a recent interview with Somerville conducted by BW&BK’s Carl Begai is availabel below:

Folks that are expecting Somerville to follow a similar path to the work she’s done for EPICA and AVANTASIA on Alloy are in for a shock. Some tracks are attitude-laden cousins to melodic rock, others are heavy-edged and bordering-on-Black Sabbath dark. The album is almost completely devoid of orchestral arrangements and features no neo-classical bombast whatsoever, carried through numerous twists and turns instead by the vocals and some almighty riffs. Bottom line: Alloy is loaded with plenty WTF moments.

“Which is a good thing (laughs). Nothing about what I do is contrived; it all comes out the way that it comes out, and sometimes it needs to be a little more conformed, I guess. Literally, as cheesy as it sounds, the music pours out of me the way that I feel it. I don’t like following formulas. My songs have a typical song structure – verse / pre-chorus / chorus – and that’s just in me, but in terms of trying to fit a certain formula, that’s not a conscious thing for me. It’s not something I want to do, either. That’s why there are no Latin choirs on the album (laughs).”

“I’ve actually gotten comparisons to Epica and After Forever. In fact, one guy made the After Forever comparison before he knew that Sander was one of the songwriters on Alloy. That kind of surprised me, but Sander does have a signature sound, but I don’t hear the similarities.”

Click here for more, including Somerville discussing working with Sascha Paeth and Avantasia bandmate Jorn Lande (MASTERPLAN) on the song ‘Scream It’.

Alloy was released on November 4th in Europe and November 1st in North America. The tracklist is as follows:

‘Machine Gun’
‘Coward’
‘Purge’
‘Utter Descension’
‘Bow To The Ego’
‘Mistaken’
‘Scream It’
‘Justifiable Casualty’
‘Path Of Least Resistance’
‘Into The Dissonance’
‘Slow It Down’
‘Love Is An Illusion’ (bonus track)

The first video from the album is for the track ‘Coward’ which can be viewed below:
