In a brand new interview with ARTISTdirect.com editor-in-chief Rick Florino, singer and bassist Troy Sanders of Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON spoke about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band’s follow-up to 2011′s “The Hunter”, tentatively due in early 2014.

Asked if the new material picks up where “The Hunter” left off or if it is a new avenue altogether, Sanders said: “To a degree, I’m going to say it’s picking up where we left off. It’s kind of an open game or a clean slate. Every single day I go to band practice, I feel like I’m going to a chef’s table for a food tasting because there’s an element of the unknown. I’m fascinated with that. Either Chef Brent or Chef Bill will present a tasty riff dish of the day and we all lock in and go for it. Nothing that is out of the box will be turned away.”

He continued: “We’re doing this for ourselves and by ourselves. We’re creating delicious sandwiches every day at band practice. [laughs]

Yesterday Chef Brent brought down some tasty turkey, and it was delicious. Brann decides what kind of bread is going to sandwich it. I’m just trying to create an intriguing mayonnaise or some kind of glue to hold this sandwich together. Who knows that’s going to happen today? We just don’t know.

“Per usual, in the writing process, I’m completely absorbed in MASTODON material. I’m a late bloomer, and it takes me a while to grasp a lot of things in life, and MASTODON material is one of them. I’ll listen to a demo of a particular song over and over until I can possibly find an interesting vocal melody line or lyrics that’ll fit a certain part. I immerse myself one-hundred percent in our riff writing. I’m also enjoying my home time as we’re about to leave for the entire summer. I’m trying to find a healthy balance of home and tour life.”

Regarding what’s next for MASTODON, Sanders said: “We’ve got the skeletons of enough songs for an entire album. We’re thinking of vocal ideas and putting together as much rough demos as we can before we go overseas so we can listen to everything over the summer. Then, when we return from the tour, we’ll know what we want to keep, delete, and add.”

”I had dinner with these fine gentlemen last night. Brann Dailor, Bill Ward, Dave Lombardo, Shawn Drover and Marco Soccoli. MASTODON have announced that they are writing and recording a song for the upcoming sequel to the Disney Pixar animated film Monsters, Inc., entitled Monsters University.

From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

Screaming with laughter and fun, Monsters University is directed by Dan Scanlon (Cars, Mater and the Ghostlight, Tracy) and produced by Kori Rae (Up, The Incredibles, Monsters, Inc.). Tom Araya

In June, 2011, Slayer bassist/vocalist Tom Araya received the key to his birth city Viña del Mar, Chile from Mayor Virginia Reginato for Musical Career Recognition. This is the first official recognition of Chile to Tom Araya, who left Chile at five years of age with his family for the US.

Onslaught Radio conducted an interview with bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders of Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON earlier today (Saturday, August 25) at the Reading Festival at Little John’s Farm in Reading, England. You can now watch the chat below.

On the band’s ever-evolving sound:

Troy: “The four of us in the band, we always embrace change and we never wanna write and record the same album twice. So we want each album to be a different and fresh chapter in the MASTODON catalog. That’s our intention — to write and record a new-sounding album every time.”

On MASTODON‘s plans for a new studio album:

Troy: “The future is very unknown, I think. After these two festivals — the Reading and Leeds — we’ll take some time off and start working on new ideas. And I’m as excited as anyone else on this planet to see where we’ll take it musically. I have no idea.”

On whether there is pressure on MASTODON to write music that will please fans and critics:

Troy: “We never really tried to cater any riff, any song, any sound to please any [particular group] of fans, any type of journalists, any critics or anything outside of the four of us. Once the four of us leave our practice space after writing a song, or even a riff, or even one line of lyrics, or something, if the four of us agree on it and are proud of it and are happy with it, then that’s all that really matters. Because we need to be happy with it ourselves, ’cause we’re going to be married to this music for life. And we really just write the songs, and we do everything to ultimately please ourselves, and if it carries over to anyone else around the world and they like it, then that’s just a wonderful dessert at the end of a giant, delicious buffet.”

Professionally filmed video footage of MASTODON‘s entire performance at this year’s edition of the Rock In Rio Lisbon festival — shot yesterday (Friday, May 25) in Lisbon, Portugal — can be seen below.

MASTODON is touring in support of its latest album “The Hunter”, which was released by Reprise Records in September. The band’s latest trek kicked off on April 4 in Portland, Maine, and visited more than 30 cities in the U.S. and Canada before wrapping up with a hometown show at Atlanta’s Masquerade Music Park on May 12. These shows featured Swedish metal band OPETH as co-headliners, with special guest GHOST providing support on all dates. Source: Blabbermouth.net

OPETH and MASTODON took part in a rare joint in-store signing session on Record Store Day — Saturday, April 21 — at Disc Go Round in Corpus Christi, Texas. After signing autographs between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., the bands proceeded to shop for records, to the delight of their fans. Photos from the signing can be found at this location. Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON have just released a split seven-inch single with Canadian singer-songwriter Feist to celebrate Record Store Day. This very exclusive and highly anticipated pressing features MASTODON covering the Feist song “A Commotion”, while Feist covers MASTODON‘s “Black Tongue”. Both tracks are now available for streaming below.

“It’s a wet dream to have MASTODON take one of my songs and put it into their massive machine,” Feist told RollingStone.com.

“We didn’t tell her what to do, and she didn’t tell us what to do,” says MASTODON guitarist Bill Kelliher. “‘A Commotion’ just kind of stuck out to me. I could hear the opening riff, a single A-note.”

Feist told RollingStone.com that she based her decision on which MASTODON song to cover by finding a track whose lyrics resonated with her the most. “MASTODON fans would probably be disappointed to know that I actually didn’t know MASTODON very well,” She says. “I actually went onto one of those lyric websites, and I scrolled through 50 songs and just narrowed it down to the ones I thought I could wrap myself around the words. ‘Black Tongue’ is speaking in my kind of elemental language — about diamond and earth and sky. It’s all just in a language that I already sort of speak lyrically. It was pretty easy to climb into that one.”

In a recent interview with Sweden’s Metalshrine, MASTODON drummer Brann Dailor explained how the single idea came about. “We did [the BBC television show 'Later... With Jools Holland'], and right after we got off stage, we went backstage and and we were in the hallway with [Feist], and she was talking to [MASTODON vocalist/guitarist] Brent [Hinds]. They were involved in a conversation and were just like, ‘Yeah, let’s do that! We should do it for Record Store Day!’ Something out of left field and something we’d like to be involved with more of.”

He added, “It’s fun for us. I mean, most times we end up doing covers of bands that are already sort of heavy or that is already in that vein, like the MELVINS, THIN LIZZY, METALLICA, you know what I mean? What are you gonna do to those songs to make them your own? It’s kinda difficult and especially with stuff like METALLICA or the MELVINS where we’re so kinda familiar and in love with the versions that METALLICA and the MELVINS and THIN LIZZY have created, you wanna make it sound like theirs because that’s what you’re so used to hearing. You don’t really wanna mess with it. With Feist, it’s something that we could really play with and do something different with.”
