Trivium recently completed a UK tour and are on to Europe; while in Birmingham, England, Matt Heafy talked to PrimalNoise.com about touring the world, what the band hoped to achieve with each of their albums, and much more.

Says Heafy, “The big thing for us with In Waves was to make the kind of music we wanted to hear as metal fans; we weren’t thinking of writing for something. With Ember [to Inferno] and Ascendancy we made just the music that we wanted to hear. With The Crusade we made the kind of music that was still Trivium, but we felt that maybe non-Ascendancy fans could appreciate; that was the big thing with The Crusade. Shogun was a conscious effort of ‘let’s make something that’s very progressive for us.’ With In Waves it was none of that… It was, let’s make what we want to hear, back to the basics… I’m trying to think of the most eloquent way to say we were just pleasing ourselves [laughs], but that’s the only way I can say it, so yeah.”

The UK magazine Front recently sat Trivium frontman Matt Heafy down for a “Twenty Questions” interview; among the subjects discussed are his exotic eating habits, meeting famous people, unwelcome sights, and more.

When asked what the worst thing he’s ever eaten was, Heafy replied, “The worst-sounding thing I enjoyed was locusts in Japan. It sounds terrifying but was actually really good. The thing that I recall not liking but would try again was raw squid marinated in its own raw guts. It tasted like licking the inside of a whale’s blowhole.”
However, when asked about the worst idea he’s ever had, he said, “I recently ate from an Indian buffet in a truck stop gas station. That fucked me up.”
He was also asked what his favorite curse word is, and said, “Someone once counted how many times I said fuck in a set and it was 50 times in a 45-minute set. That was way back when we first started. It’s a lot less now.”

ROADRUNNER has issued the following:

Trivium frontman Matt Heafy was interviewed by MetalInsider.net this weekend, and he’s got a lot to say about potential side projects, Trivium‘s future plans, and much more.

He says the band will be entering the studio early next year to record the follow-up to In Waves, which he claims will contain “the best ingredients of everything we’ve ever done as a band. It’s really hard to describe, though, with just metal adjectives like “heavy,” “fast” and “brutal.” It’s so hard to describe it with those words. Plus, it’s so early in the game that things can always change, as they always do in our band.”
He says he’s also spending some of his very few spare moments working on a black-metal-inspired project called Mrityu, which he describes as “derived from genres of extreme metal.” He says, “What’s nice is that with Trivium there’s a set thing of what we can and can’t do, not saying I feel limited by the band, but there are things that I know that are and aren’t our sound through experimenting. And with this I can do anything. The songs can go into any direction, any tangent, anything that I feel, and I can be very selfish about the project, which is very nice.”
