DEF LEPPARD will play its 1987 album, “Hysteria”, in its entirety as part of the Las Vegas residency, which is scheduled to kick off at the end of March.

Viva Hysteria! follows Hard Rock residencies from MÖTLEY CRÜE and GUNS N’ ROSES.

Tickets are on sale now and start at $49.50, with floor seats going for $125.

Speaking to Vegas.com, DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen stated about the band’s decision to do the Vegas residency: “A lot of other bands do this stuff, but I think it’s a little bit more special because ‘Hysteria’ was one of the diamond albums, especially in this day and age there are not that many albums that achieve that kind of status. That’s why it’s so important to us; it’s such a big-selling album. It’s a challenge as well. We’ve never actually done that before. We’ve always said yeah we could do ‘High ‘n’ Dry’. ‘Hysteria’, that’s a lot more challenging. A lot of the songs on there are hard to sing and play at the same time.”

Asked what sort of preparation the band has to go through to be able to play the entire “Hysteria” LP live, Collen said: “We’ve been playing several songs off of Hysteria’. Even this summer on the tour we did with POISON, we were playing seven of the songs because we had seven singles off the record… So much went into that record, that we’ve been playing the hits for 25 years now. Some of the other tracks on the album, just going back and listening to the whole thing, you realize just how much went into that record. Obviously [producer] Mutt Lange had a massive influence, and the whole thing about that, so we’re just totally excited. They are such amazing arrangements that you forget.”

Regarding what he thinks it was about that album that continues to attract fans today, Collen said: “Mutt Lange is a genius. He said we can do an ultimate rock album or we can do a rock version of ‘Thriller’, where we have seven hit singles. But to do that, you have to put the extra effort in. The attitude when the album came out, a lot of people didn’t like it. They thought, oh this is too pop or they didn’t understand the crossover because it’s a perfect hybrid between rock and pop. If you look at Mutt Lange‘s track record, his biggest successes are, for example, Shania Twain. He definitely brought country to the masses. He successfully fused rock, pop music with country, and I never thought I’d see the day. I remember being in Japan and hearing Shana Twain when I was going up and down in an elevator. That, for us, like I said, it was the perfect hybrid of pop and rock that was actually acceptable. A lot of rock fans didn’t like it at first, but by the end of that year, everyone had the record. You couldn’t really escape the whole thing. It was pop music, but done rock. We kicked our ass on it. It was very different from anything that had come before it, actually.”

Phil Collen, lead guitarist for the iconic rock band DEF LEPPARD, has announced plans for a charitable auction of “Wings”, a custom Jackson PC1 guitar that Collen has played throughout this summer’s “Rock Of Ages” tour. The auction, taking place exclusively on eBay, will begin on September 5 and end September 14, the last date of the tour. The winner will be announced in November which is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and all proceeds from the auction will benefit the Gerson Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the Gerson Therapy, an alternative treatment for cancer and other degenerative diseases.

In early 2012, Jake Willoughby, a guitar and music store owner, asked Collen if he would assist in helping to raise money towards the fight against cancer, with Jake‘s mother having just passed away from pancreatic cancer after a courageous 13-month fight. By tragic coincidence, Phil‘s own father, Kenneth, succumbed to the same disease in 2004. Jake donated a Collen signature guitar, the Jackson PC1, from his music store. In the spirit of hope, it was named “Wings”. Mike Learn, a noted artist whose graphics are well known in the guitar world, donated the graphic custom paint job on the guitar. Ironically, Mike lost two family members to the same disease.

Phil began researching companies that were not only looking to prevent cancer, but also reverse its devastating effects. He initially had heard about the Gerson Institute located in San Diego, California from Jeni Cook, a raw foods chef and the wife of SEX PISTOLS and MANRAZE drummer Paul Cook. As Phil watched “The Gerson Miracle” DVD, he was incredibly moved by their cause, wishing he would have known about them before his father passed.

The Gerson Institute is a non-profit organization in San Diego, California dedicated to providing education and training in the Gerson Therapy — an alternative, non-toxic treatment for cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases. The Gerson Therapy, developed by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1920s, activates the body’s extraordinary ability to heal itself through an organic, vegetarian diet, raw juices, detoxification, and natural supplements. Since this powerful, natural treatment boosts the body’s own immune system, it is an effective method for treating not only cancer, but a variety of degenerative diseases including arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and skin tuberculosis.

Dr. Gerson began developing the Therapy while looking for a way to manage his own debilitating migraines, a path that lead him to a holistic understanding of medicine that is finally gaining growing acceptance.

This year marks a number of anniversaries for Collen, namely the 30th anniversary of his joining DEF LEPPARD as lead guitarist making his debut on the 10-times-platinum (in the USA) album “Pyromania”. In addition, this year marks the 25th anniversary for the 13-times-platinum (USA) album “Hysteria”, as well as the 20th anniversary of its 5-times-platinum (USA) follow-up, “Adrenalize”.

In a recent interview with The Patriot-News, DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen was asked if the band was working on new material. “Yeah, some really cool, hard-rock stuff,” he replied. “I don’t know when that will be out. It’s a matter of fitting in when we can record. I don’t think we’ll go into a studio. You can pretty much do it in a trailer. We’ve recorded a bunch of stuff while on tour. That might be the way to go … to not take a whole block [of time] out and say, ‘We’re going to record for a year.’ That’s the way the industry’s gone. It’s more singles-based. You don’t have to put an album out, you can put a song out here and there.”

Asked if he thinks a band like DEF LEPPARD could make it big today, Phil said, “No, definitely not. The times have changed. It was a time and a place and you have to be aware of that. The fact that we’re out there still touring and writing new music is fascinating to me in this environment. I think we’re really blessed, actually.”

On the topic of why he thinks DEF LEPPARD is one of the few bands from the ’80s that have a large, devoted fan base, Phil said, “There’s an integrity we’ve got that a lot of other bands haven’t. They go away after awhile, and we’ve never stopped. We do new songs. Writing new material is the lifeblood. We are real, we walk it and talk it. The fact that we’ve known each other for so long and gone through so many experiences, good and bad, it keeps us very tight.”

Regarding the secret to keeping a band together, Collen said, “We’re from a working-class background in England. I’ve known lots of bands and they’re weak in the way they approach things — they get so upset over the slightest little thing. I think there’s something about [our background] that keeps you going. The things that make other bands split up don’t even register with us.”

DEF LEPPARD drummer Rick Allen confirmed in a new video message that his band will tour with POISON this summer. Exact cities and dates have yet to be announced.

In a recent interview with AOL‘s Noisecreep, DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen stated about the band’s upcoming road activities. “We’re actually going to be back on tour around when the [film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical 'Rock Of Ages'] is out, and it would be a lot of fun to get some of the other bands featured in ‘Rock Of Ages’ out with us,” he said. “Nothing has been finalized yet, but apparently POISON will be joining us — at least according to [POISON singer] Bret Michaels, who has been telling everyone that they’ll be touring with us this year. [Laughs] We went out with POISON in 2009, and we all had so much fun. If it does end up happening like that, I would love for the third band to be someone like TWISTED SISTER, since they’re also in the new movie. I think that would make for a great lineup.”

“Rock Of Ages” is a love story told through the music of DEF LEPPARD, PAT BENATAR, BON JOVI, JOURNEY, POISON, TWISTED SISTER and other artists from the 1980s.

“Rock Of Ages” stars Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, Malin Akerman and many others. It scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 1.

DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen spoke to Ultimate Classic Rock about the recent death of pop superstar Whitney Houston.

“It’s awful and it really hit me,” Collen said. “I’ve known people and lost people who’ve been through the exact same thing. What really irritates me when someone special dies is the outpouring and everyone loves to show up for the funeral but they don’t really want to help when the person needs it.”

Collen added, “When Steve [Clark, DEF LEPPARD guitarist] died [in 1991 as the result of a lethal mix of prescription drugs and alcohol], that really pissed me off. There were people coming out of the woodwork and I was like, ‘Whoa, where were you when he really needed you?’ and in fact all they were doing at that time was actually encouraging him to be the way that he was that ended up killing him. So I have a very kind of weird attachment, even to Whitney, it’s like, ‘Wow, she came out of the same time as us.’ It really sucks because she was so talented and amazing.”

Collen also spoke about a few other music stars who’ve recently died under similar circumstances. “The Michael Jackson thing — it happens all the time,” he said. “With Steve, it would be the same thing, in and out of rehab centers. Amy Winehouse, same deal. There’s some people trying to help but I think there are a lot of enablers around there and they really need a lot of help. It’s just tragic and what a great voice [Houston had], she was the blueprint of, certainly now, how people sing. You see ‘The X Factor’ and ‘American Idol’ and they’re all doing Whitney Houston stuff because that’s how you want to sound.”

DEF LEPPARD guitarist and MANRAZE frontman Phil Collen has recorded a guest appearance for the upcoming OEDIPUS album, “Vicious Little Smile”, in stores in North America on March 13 via THC: Music/Rocket Science. Phil contributed lead and rhythm guitars to the track “Final Machine”.

“We had built up a mutual admiration through our label, who also releases Phil‘s MANRAZE project, and the idea came up for him to play on a track, and miraculously, it ended up happening,” says OEDIPUS bassist/vocalist Jeremy Haffner. “It turned out amazing. We couldn’t be happier or more honored. Phil is such a legendary and spectacular talent, and we were all just blown away with how cool and naturally it came together.”

Added Collen: “I loved the track as soon as I heard it. These guys have got phenomenal energy. Playing on it was a blast, and I look forward to hearing the rest of the album.”

Produced by Darian Cowgill (SLEEPING GIANT, MIDDLE CLASS RUT), “Vicious Little Smile” formally releases several of the L.A. trio’s international hits, including “Tres Las”, “Burn It Down” and “Gimme a Chance”, which have already received airplay in over 30 countries.

For over a decade, OEDIPUS has been one of L.A.’s best-kept secrets, from their roots as an underground progressive rock favorite to achieving status as an international rock powerhouse with massive success in Europe.

In 2010, Polish radio giant Eska Rock added OEDIPUS‘ single “Tres Las”, which went on to top the Polish rock charts and became the genesis of 3 #1 Polish rock singles, followed by repeated visits to Europe, including a performance at Ursynalia, where the band performed at Poland’s biggest open-air festival, alongside KORN, GUANO APES, ALTER BRIDGE, SIMPLE PLAN and more.

OEDIPUS will return to Europe twice more in 2012, and follow it up with a U.S. run in April with ZERO 1, The hard rock project featuring actor/comedian Hal Sparks.

Video footage of MANRAZE — the rock outfit featuring Phil Collen of DEF LEPPARD, Simon Laffy from GIRL and Paul Cook of the SEX PISTOLS — performing a cover version of the JIMI HENDRIX classic “Fire” can be seen below. Collen and his bandmates pay homage to Hendrix while still managing to infuse the song with the highly amped spirit that is MANRAZE.

“Fire” has been a staple of MANRAZE‘s live shows since the group’s first London gigs began in 2005.

Hendrix‘s three-piece band provided the signature blueprint for MANRAZE as Collen and his fellow musicians continued to gain recognition for their cleverly written and arranged infectious reggae/rock rhythms.

MANRAZE‘s sophomore album, “punkfunkrootsrock”, was unleashed upon the masses on August 2 through Rocket Science Ventures in the U.S. and Canada. The album was also released July 27 in Japan on Nippon/Columbia and in the Europe via Edel Music.

It all started in 2004 when Phil Collen, after 20-plus years as lead guitarist for DEF LEPPARD, decided to express himself via another creative outlet — something a bit closer to his musical home. After a chance meeting on the street with Paul Cook, MANRAZE finally released their debut album, “Surreal”, through Universal Records in the summer of 2008 to rave reviews. The group’s debut album was chocked full of rebellious in-your-face mantras (“Turn it Up”, “This Is”, “Running Me Up”) ranging from hardcore punk to dub.

Express & Star’s Ian Harvey has issued an interview with DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen. An excerpt follows:

“The problem with being in a huge band that certainly pioneered a certain sound, certain recording techniques, is you kind of get painted into a corner a little bit because you can’t stray too far from that formula”, says Collen.

“I think with any artist you want to do something different all the time and that’s a nice problem to have, that everyone likes you and and you can’t move too far from that, but the downside is that it gets a little frustrating.

“You come up with different types of stuff and you need an outlet. When I write songs they are either a Def Leppard song or they’re not and if they’re not I don’t try to push it.”
