STONE TEMPLE PILOTS have announced they have “officially terminated” their lead singer, Scott Weiland. No reason was given for the split. A spokeswoman said the band has no further comment at this time.

Weiland is getting ready to embark on a solo tour where he will perform songs from the first two STONE TEMPLE PILOTS albums, 1992′s “Core” and 1994′s “Purple”.

“Originally, it was an idea I came up with for STP for the anniversary of ‘Core’ to do the ‘Core’ album in its entirety,” Weiland told MLive. “The rest of the guys didn’t want to do it. So, it was still something that there was a lot of public interest in. Having that said, the idea was brought up to me through management. I talked to the guys in my solo band, THE WILDABOUTS, and they were totally into it, as were the promoters. It worked out.”

Weiland and THE WILDABOUTS will kick off the 20-city trek, dubbed the “Purple At The Core Tour”, on March 1 in Flint, Michigan. The singer will stop by several U.S. cities during the run, including New York, Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Boston, Houston, and Dallas.

In a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone, Weiland stated about the status of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS: “I think we kind of overplayed ourselves by playing the same set over and over. I think the band needs to take some time off and be creative again. I always felt that our creativity and the growth we made within making records as artists was equally as important as we were as a live band. The transformation from ‘Core’ to where we ended up before we took that time off, when I started with VELVET REVOLVER, was enormous. I think we need to get back to that. I don’t think that touring consistently with a greatest-hits package gets you anywhere. It diminishes things.”

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS guitarist Dean DeLeo told New Jersey radio station WRAT in a March 2012 interview that contrary to earlier reports, the quartet was not in the studio recording its seventh studio effort. When asked if the band would work on a new disc anytime soon, DeLeo answered, “Possibly, we’re just kind of enjoying home life right now and raising our kids and enjoying the loves of our lives.”

Word of a new STP album first surfaced as early as the fall of 2010, just months after the band released its self-titled sixth effort.

That 2010 album came nine years after STP‘s last record, “Shangri-La-Dee-Da”, and followed the band’s 2008 reunion after a seven-year hiatus.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS released their first-ever live DVD/Blu-ray last June. Entitled “Alive In The Windy City”, the effort contained the band’s entire concert from March 27, 2010 at the Riviera Theater in Chicago, Illinois.

Slash has blasted Scott Weiland for claiming in various interviews that he was going to be rejoining VELVET REVOLVER, saying, “None of us have a clue what he’s talking about… We’re not buying it.”

Weiland recently said that he thought it was “the perfect time for VELVET REVOLVER to get back together,” telling Rolling Stone magazine, “I am completely open to it, and I know there are other guys in the band that are completely open to it.”

VELVET REVOLVER has been without a singer and on more or less permanent hiatus since Weiland was dismissed from the band in April 2008. He rejoined STONE TEMPLE PILOTS at that time and has toured constantly and cut one album with them.

In an interview in the new issue of Classic Rock, Slash was reluctant to address Weiland‘s recent comments, saying “I don’t even want to give him this attention, to tell you the truth.”

He added: “I think at this point Scott just got fired from STP and I think he’s trying to pull off that trick of trying to get something else going on, and we’re not buying it. The door’s shut on this side and it’s probably shut on that side too, so he’s on his own. And he deserves it, too.”

Slash continued: “Scott is completely speaking out of his ass [about the VELVET REVOLVER reunion]. Nobody at this end has had any conversations with Scott on this subject, except maybe [VELVET REVOLVER guitarist] Dave Kushner, because he was the only one in the band who was really close to him. And all things considered, we don’t have a good professional relationship with Scott.

“And it also pisses me off because he’s put STP through so much shit over the years, and put us through shit too when we were working with him. In 2008, that was all over with, so at this point, when he starts coming up with this stuff, it’s like, whatever.”

The guitarist said he is in a good frame of mind these days and he had no intention of bringing a begative influence like Weiland back into his life. “It’s been great,” Slash said. “It’s basically since I got my shit together and stopped touring with Scott. Even if I didn’t have my solo thing going on, I still wouldn’t work with him.”

VELVET REVOLVER did reunite with Weiland for a four-song set in January 2011 at a Los Angeles tribute concert for late songwriter John O’Brien (see video below), but the band has otherwise remained inactive.

Scott Weiland‘s (STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, ex-VELVET REVOLVER) business partner and touring guitarist Doug Grean has revealed via Facebook that he is working on a new Weiland Christmas song. He added, “It’s the record that just won’t quit!”

Weiland‘s Christmas album, “The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”, was released in October 2011 via Rhino Records. According to a press release, the CD covers “a variety of styles including big band swing, orchestrated ballads, reggae, bossa nova and more, all delivered with surprising ease by Scott Weiland.”

In a 2011 interview, Weiland stated about his reasons for releasing a Christmas album, “Um, well, why not? They’re songs and renditions that I’ve listened to from a child all the way to my adult years. And they’re very special to my heart, you know. If you last long enough in this business, you have the ability to make the kind of music you want to make. And this is something I’ve wanted to do for a while.”

When asked how he ended up making a Christmas album, Weiland said, “We actually recorded one song over a year ago, and we decided, ‘Let’s make this an album.’ So we recorded with a full jazz orchestra — some of the best players around. And we took a lot of time figuring out the arrangements and finding the right keys and giving some of the songs a different flavor. You’ve got some bossa nova, a little reggae. It was amazing to be able to sing those kinds of songs and experiment with different phrasing. Singing rock ‘n’ roll is a lot different than singing jazz.”

STONE SOUR and SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor last year slammed Weiland, calling the STP singer a “lazy piece of shit” for recording and releasing “The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”.
