Norwegian black metallers SATYRICON are putting the finishing touches on their ninth, self-titled studio album for a September release.

Comments SATYRICON frontman Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven: “I’m about to start my last day in the studio! I had my first February 2nd, so it has been a while, you could say.

“I know I might have to a day of recalls (minor adjustments) and there is mastering too, but this is pretty much it.

“Today the record will be complete.

“Throughout the mix, I have redone a couple of vocal things that needed it and I had some keyboard and piano ideas that I have added.

“It is funny how it takes longer when you try and balance a mix without doing much to the sound.

“I am very proud and I sincerely hope you will like it.”

Check put photos from the studio at this location.

“Satyricon” will feature a guest appearance by Sivert Høyem, the Norwegian singer best known as the vocalist of the rock band MADRUGADA.

Speaking to AOL‘s Noisecreep at this year’s Inferno festival, Satyr stated about SATYRICON‘s upcoming album: “To me, it sounds very authentic, it’s organic-sounding. And in this digital age where music is mostly played through computers, a lot of that analog vibe gets lost in translation when you play music through medias like that, but I still wanna do it because there’s nothing quite like it. To me, it just makes everything sound the way it’s supposed to sound — it’s dynamical; the music is alive, it’s not overly compressed, the levels are not pushed. So, musically speaking, it’s a very atmospheric record… This record is full of life. There are a lot of surprises here, but I think it’s gonna be a record that’s gonna help the black metal movement perhaps find a new way for the future.”

SATYRICON has always pushed boundaries and never conformed to what was “expected“. That mindset continues to this day, as they awill take part in a very special, exclusive show on September 8 at Oslo’s Norwegian National Opera House, where they will perform together with Norway’s 55-strong National Opera Chorus.

The special event is part of the Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, and fans of both SATYRICON and the National Opera Chorus can look forward to a very unique and exciting evening, which coincides with the worldwide release of SATYRICON‘s new CDtitled.

There is nowhere better suited to provide the dynamics, power and authenticity to such an occasion than the Opera Choir and SATYRICON. To us, there is no better way to celebrate with our fans that we are back with our first album in five years. We are also excited to have a couple of special musical friends come and play their part as well. Ladies and gentlemen — welcome!”

The Opera Chorus‘ lead conductor, David Maiwald, adds: “Mixing different musical expressions is always exciting. When the internationally acclaimed black metal band SATYRICON meets the voluminous voices of the Norwegian National Opera Chorus, we expect a powerful and monumental result, rich in innovative surprises.”

The band’s frontman, Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven, states in a new online posting: “The recording is coming to an end. Next week will be the last before the mix. Finally some light at the end of the tunnel after almost four months of recording! Right now I am just looking forward to share this with you and see what you think. It will be a while though, but it will be worth it. I am sure.”

Norwegian black metallers SATYRICON will enter the studio in February to begin recording their new album for a tentative September release. The band will premier sme of its new material during an appearance at this year’s edition of the Inferno festival, set to take place March 27-30, 2013 at the Rockefeller, John Dee, Rock In, Blå, Unholy, Victoria and Revolver venues in Oslo, Norway.

In a June 2012 interview with MetalSickness.com, SATYRICON frontman Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven stated about the band’s decision to take a long break after completing its last extensive tour in 2009, “I felt that the cycle of SATYRICON had become very something different from what I wanted it to be. It became like this: write, rehearse, record, promote, tour, finish. [Then again] write, rehearse, record, promote, tour, finish. And again and again and again. And I came to a point in 2009 where I went, like, ‘What’s the point of this? Is this why I started [playing music]? Definitely not.’ This was never my goal to come in a situation like this. It’s not like I dreamt about living on a bus. It was not my goal in life. Or to live my life in a suitcase. Or in a backstage. It was never my plan. My plan was to write music, record music and release music and then do the occasional show and tour, but this became like a clusterfuck of events — all the time something going on and all this pressure all the time, especially from everyone around us. Plus, I also think that when you’re working so intensely, there’s sort of this tear-and-wear to people on a personal level. And also, as the leader of a company or a sports team or a metal band, you also have a responsibility to make some decisions that might be popular but unnecessary. And for those who just want to go on the road and play all the time, they don’t want to have a break, and our agent and record company, they certainly didn’t want any break. But for me, it became almost like a choice between quitting as a band or taking a break.”

SATYRICON‘s latest album, “The Age Of Nero” (2008), entered the German Media Control chart at position No. 73. It also landed on the national chart in Norway at position No. 5. This was SATYRICON‘s lowest chart entry in the band’s home country since “Rebel Extravaganza”, which premiered at No. 32 in 1999. “Volcano” (2002) entered the chart at No. 4, while 2006′s “Now, Diabolical” came in at No. 2.

MetalSickness.com conducted an interview with Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven, renowned vocalist/guitarist of the Norwegian black metal band SATYRICON, at this year’s edition of the Hellfest festival, which was held June 15-17 in Clisson, France. You can now watch the chat below.

When asked what he has been doing since SATYRICON announced in 2009 that it was planning to take a long break, Satyr said, “Personally, I spent a lot of time pursuing my interest in wine. I’ve been working on making wine with three differernt winemakers. I made two wines together with a winemaker in Italy. With a champagne house, I made an organic champage. And I made a white wine from the southwest of France. And I went and visited a winemaker friend of mine in Burgundy, and I did a wine harvest there. I’ve also been working a little bit on a small wine-book project. So again I went back to Burgundy and visited many, many producers to talk about organic and biodynamic winemaking. And I’ve been working on my wine education. So it’s a very, very different world.”

He continued, “I am the person, I can be really obsessive about my work. So, for me, to do something which didn’t have any sort of target or big goals, but was very sort of… pleasure only, was very important for me on a personal level. But most importantly, I felt that the cycle of SATYRICON had become very something different from what I wanted it to be. It became like this: write, rehearse, record, promote, tour, finish. [Then again] write, rehearse, record, promote, tour, finish. And again and again and again. And I came to a point in 2009 where I went, like, ‘What’s the point of this? But for me, it became almost like a choice between quitting as a band or taking a break. And I think that if we continue now, we can push ourselves for two or three more years, and then we will quit. Or we can take a break… It just goes to show how right I was, because I was thinking that one year was more than enough, and after one year, I still felt that, ‘I’m not ready. I want to have a longer break.’ So we had one and a half year… We started working on the new album last summer. So it was very necessary.”

He added, “Put it in a different way… Let’s say you’re a 40-year-old guy and you’re dating a 20-year-old girl. It could be difficult talking to a 20-year-old girl, because she wouldn’t even know who was the president of America during your youth, because she wasn’t born… You know what I’m saying?! But what a 20-year-old girl could do to a 40-year-old guy is make him rediscover a young man inside of him. And for me, I’m using that parallel, because I think I needed to step outside to find back the same feeling as when we were challengers. ‘Cause where we were at, we were sort of one of the big guns. But I wanted to find back the feeling inside of me when going to rehearsal was a lot of fun because it was an opportunity to play music. And after 20 years, going to rehearsal is more like a duty because you have to be prepared for the next tour or something like that. But now, it’s more like going to rehearsal is going to rehearsal because it’s fun to play. It’s as simple as that.”

Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven, renowned vocalist/guitarist of the Norwegian black metal band SATYRICON, will host an informal wine-tasting event during this year’s Inferno Festival at the Clarion Royal Christiania hotel in Oslo, Norway on Friday, April 22 from 15.30 to 17.00. Satyr will introduce his own wines and share his passion for well-made traditional wines. This tasting event is suitable for anyone who likes wine.

Wongraven last year partnered with Luca Roagna (pictured below with Satyr), a fifth-generation winemaker from Piedmont, Italy, to launch Satyr‘s own brand of wine. Wongraven chose the best wines from the Roagna winery and made them available with his name on each bottle in gothic letters and black background with an outline illustration of the devil on the label.

Two wines are available from the Wongraven brand:

* Langhe Rosso Alleanza Nero di Wongraven 2009
* Barolo Unione Nero di Wongraven 2006

Wongraven and Roagna first met in the spring of 2003 while SATYRICON was on tour in Italy and spent several months last year creating two classic wines that represent a combination of Roagna‘s skilled vineyard work and Satyr‘s vision of traditional Piedmontese wines.

“When I explain my role in the process to musician friends who have no knowledge of wine, I tell them that Luca created the songs and recorded the album, while I mixed it,” Wongraven told Adressa.no in an interview.

Authenticity is the common denominator in Satyr‘s music and wine.

Wongraven admits that he himself is skeptical when he sees other people lending their names to wine brands.

“I think that people who know me understand why I have chosen to lend my name to these wines,” he explained. “I have made wines that I am proud of.”

Wongraven is currently working on a book about wine, to be released in the fall.
