“John The Revelator”, a brand new song from virtuoso guitarist and visionary composer Steve Vai, is available for streaming at RollingStone.com. The track is a 1930s gospel-blues classic, and it has been forever changed and layered with heavy rock Vai-mojo.
“John The Revelator” comes off Vai‘s new solo album of original material, “The Story Of Light”, which is scheduled for release on August 14. The title comes out on Favored Nations Entertainment, the label Vai founded in 1999. The sprawling and expressive 12-song set continues a conceptual and cosmic narrative arc that began with the artist’s most recent studio release, 2005′s acclaimed “Real Illusions: Reflections”.
Although “The Story Of Light” is largely instrumental, the album does feature guest vocalists, including singer-songwriter Aimee Mann — dueting with Vai on “No More Amsterdam”, which she also co-wrote. Beverly McClellan, a season one finalist on “The Voice”, appears on “John The Revelator”, a track inspired by a vintage recording of blues singer Blind Willie Johnson, whose acid-soaked vocals are in the mix as well. Other highlights include the title track (which opens the album), “Gravity Storm”, “The Moon And I”, and “Velorum”.
Throughout, three-time Grammy-winner Vai‘s lead guitar is as lyrically resonant as it is technically masterful, his licks and solos bending sounds and in listeners’ minds in equal measure. “The Story Of Light” follows the journey of a man driven mad by grief, intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment, and redemption.
“I’m always pursuing knowledge, I’m a seeker of spiritual equilibrium-and music is a big part of that,” says Vai. “I’ve been obsessed with these kinds of ideas for years.” Looking ahead, Vai envisions a third set of songs that will unravel the mysteries and reveal truths that swirl through both ‘The Story Of Light’ and ‘Real Illusions: Reflections’. The completed trilogy, intended to be cinematic-even operatic-in scope, will include lyrics and narration.
“The Story Of Light” is available as of today for online pre-sale orders. This special pre-sale selection of bundled packages is offered exclusively through Vai‘s web site, Vai.com, where complete details on the products and ordering information are available. Each package includes an instant download of a track from the new album personally selected by Vai, “Gravity Storm”.

The Musicians Foundation has announced the STEVE VAI Guitar Scholarship to be awarded in fall 2012, made possible by the Grammy Award-winning guitar legend through his Make A Noise Foundation. The scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in Musicians Institute’s Associate Of Arts In Performance Program guitar track who demonstrates both outstanding overall musicianship and the potential for developing a unique voice on the instrument in any style or genre.
“A formal music education can completely change an aspiring musician’s creative overview. Understanding the language of music can expand their musical vocabulary and offer the ability to ‘dimensionalize’ their vision,” said Vai. “Surrounding yourself with other musicians and sharing the experience of creating music in a complete artistic environment is perhaps the most valuable education for any young musician.”
Founded with Ruta Sepetys in 1998, Vai’s Make A Noise Foundation was established to provide musical instruments and music education to young musicians who cannot afford them. He continues to support developing talent through the new Steve Vai Guitar Scholarship.
Application deadline for the fall 2012 scholarship is August 24th. More information on the Steve Vai Guitar Scholarship including eligibility requirements and application are available through Musicians Institute.

Guitar legend STEVE VAI has checked in with the following update:
“Hey Folks. Here‘s something new for you guitar heads to fetish. I know I do! And did I tell you I’m almost done with the new record?”
In addition, Vai has commented on his forthcoming album:
“In looking for an interesting collaboration for a track on the new record, I called Aimee Mann. We went to Berkley together and she was actually in a band back then with my then girlfriend, (now wife) Pia. Through the years I always enjoyed Aimee’s music. Something special about her. She was kind enough to write lyrics and sing a duo with me on a track. Added a whole new dimension. She’s the first one I collaborated with on my music in 13 years. What a great gal. Hope for more of that.”
