Graspop Metal Meeting has issued as follows:

Last year, TWISTED SISTER and their flamboyant frontman Dee Snider set foot on Belgian soil for the first time in thirty years. They came, saw and conquered the Dessel plains and everyone agreed Dee Snider was the king of GMM2012. So you can imagine how thrilled we are to announce that Twisted Sister are coming back for round two and will be headlining GMM on Friday 28 June. To be honest, we made it clear that ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ and wait another thirty years and they took the hint. Just like last year, tens of thousands of throats will roar ‘I Wanna Rock’ so join the party in front of the main stage! Just remember: ‘You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll’ and you sure as hell can’t stop Twisted Sister!

For WITHIN TEMPTATION it all started in 1996, the year of the first edition of GMM. The band has matured tremendously since then and today they are one of the biggest crowd draws on the metal scene. Last November they celebrated their 15th anniversary with a spectacular sold-out show at Antwerp Sports Palace. In recent years, the band has also pushed back metal boundaries with stellar performances at alternative and mainstream festivals like Pukkelpop and Rock Werchter. True to their roots, the likeable Dutchmen were more than happy to make another appearance at GMM and we’re certainly looking forward to having them.

Have also been confirmed for GMM2013: UDO, HEAVEN SHALL BURN, OVERKILL, HEATHEN, THE GHOST INSIDE, ASKING ALEXANDRIA, SYLOSIS and VOODOO SIX.

Members of LAMB OF GOD, IN FLAMES and SYLOSIS joined tourmates HELLYEAH on stage last night (Saturday, December 8) Kansas City, Missouri to pay tribute to late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott who was shot and killed by a deranged “fan” while performing in Columbus, Ohio eight years earlier.

Fan-filmed footage of the event can be seen below.

Vocalist Randy Blythe of tour headliners LAMB OF GOD commented via his Instagram account: “Tonight’s show in Kansas City was an emotional one for us on this tour, especially the HELLYEAH guys. Eight years ago (December 8, 2004) a crazy man jumped onstage and killed Darrell ‘Dimebag’ Abbott in front of two members of HELLYEAH, one of which, of course, is his brother Vinnie Paul. This night changed EVERYTHING for those of us in metal bands — something had been taken away from us, and it wasn’t just Dime. It was our care-free sorta attitude; this sort of thing just didn’t happen in OUR SCENE.

“But it did, and we are all the worse for it. Things have changed, but we still are out here. Vinnie and Bobzilla are still out here rocking their balls off — they have my utmost respect for that. I don’t know if I would step foot on a stage again after witnessing and going through what they did. But they are musicians — plus Dime woulda wanted it that way; you can bet your ass on that.

“The other day, Vinnie came to me and said, Hey, man, can we have a few extra moments in Kansas City to have a drink in memory of Dime?’ Are you kidding me? OF COURSE. So tonight, the whole damn tour, every member of every band, got up on that stage and had a drink in his honor. It felt like family to me, in those best moments of tour when you all are there together, doing this incredible thing, as a FAMILY.

“I wish Dime coulda been there in person with us. But it’s like I said tonight onstage — a mad man’s bullet can take this mortal shell, but TRUE LEGENDS NEVER DIE. We keep them alive, all of us, when we come together band & audience and do this thing we all love so much.

“RIP, Dime. See ya on the other side, bro!”

Most Americans enjoy a four-day Thanksgiving holiday, filled with over-eating, shopping in the middle of the night for unnecessary gifts, in preparation for the December holidays, and watching the endless parade of football games on television. If the pilgrims could see us now! I’m thankful a few thousand of my south Jersey/Philly area neighbors took their heads out of the refrigerator and got their butts off the sofa long enough to witness a kick-ass show. All the more amazing since the headlining performance was simulcast live, across the nation! The Saturday following US Thanksgiving and Black Friday (November 24th), the Electric Factory hosted to a dual-headliner package, with LAMB OF GOD and IN FLAMES. HELLYEAH, a club headliner in their own right, and SYLOSIS were also on the bill.

Packed to the wall, everyone was into the show, from jump. In Flames brought their own lighting rig, flashing vertical stripes (anyone remember W.A.S.P., ala Inside The Electric Circus tour?) behind their amplifier backline. In baseball cap and T-shirt from a local microbrewery, Anders Friden was in a playful mood, asking “Do you know your metal history,” prior to ‘Embody The Invisible’, the lone offering from the Nineties. There was no ‘Trigger’, nor ‘Pinball Map’, to the chagrin of some standing at the barricade, but they did get ‘Cloud Connected’. Later, when someone in the crowd was attempting to get his attention, the singer questioned, “You play guitar? That sucks. You should be a singer.” Guitarist Björn Gelotte challenged the frontman’s notion, to which Friden retorted, “You drink Bud Light! You should be drinking Yards (pointing to the logo on his chest).” Cue ‘Mirror’s Truth’, with massive strobe attack. Prior to a blue hued ‘Take This Life’, Friden panhandled for change from the security guards (who had been earning their paychecks with a constant stream of crowd surfers breaching the barricade), generating a quarter for his troubles, adding, “A quarter? I can call home. The rock life is tough.” for the ‘My Sweet Shadow’ finale, the singer produced a dollar and returned it to one of the guards, saying “I got a quarter and give back a dollar, that’s how it works with In Flames.” Gelotte was made to wear a blue Yards headband for the last number, looking none too pleased about the endorsement.

If nothing else, Randy Blythe‘s legal troubles and ensuing concert cancellations (this show was originally scheduled for the first week of September) have focused Lamb Of God‘s energy and created an even more lethal killing machine. Perhaps you saw it, on the live simulcast. Always a whirling, roaming bundle of nerves, from the opening ‘Desolation’, Blythe stalked the stage with a purpose. Atop a steel ramp, drummer Chris Adler, his hair billowing in the wind, was sandwiched between a pair of video screens that replicated some of the onstage footage, as well as providing accompaniment for some of the songs. During ‘Ruin’ (dedicated to Mikey who released their first seven inch), it flashed images of Jimmy Swaggart and other evangelist tragedies, including Jim Jones/Jonestown, black & white 50s snake shaman and David Koresch, ultimately ending with a series of single words, “Fear,” “Pain” and “Ruin.” Not sure everyone understood what the images were, flashing behind the band. Red was the appropriate color choice for ‘Walk With Me In Hell’, Blythe continuing to douse his dreadlocked head with water. Perhaps its their Richmond homes’ proximity to the naval base in Newport News/Norfolk, but Blythe dedicated ‘Now You’ve Got Something To Die For’ to the military men and women, saying, “I don’t care what your politics are… (military) put their lives on the line,” the screens depicted LOG fans, in uniform and then interspliced battlefield action with live shots from the stage. ’11th Hour’ was delivered in shadows, with yellow highlights, Blythe name-checking Philly landmarks like South Street and Tattoo Moms, the band having cut their teeth in the city, the first real stomping grounds outside Virginia. The band played under purple lights for ‘The Undertow’, a pair of fast-moving clocks superimposed on the screen. At the front of the stage, Blythe pinwheeled his damp mane, in an eerie green hue, while ‘Omerta’ begins with and otherwise empty stage, pink shining on the frontman. ‘Contractor’ completed the proper set.

The black and white reproduction of the American flag, with one lone star in the upper left corner, now hangs behind Adler as they return for a lengthy encore (five songs), including heavyweights ‘Laid To Rest’ and ‘Redneck’. Between the two favorites, there was a birthday celebration/sing-along for drummer Adler and guitarist Mark Morton. It’s something of a tradition, as back in January, across town at the Trocadero, they celebrated Willie Adler’s birthday onstage. Despite more than an hour of onstage aerobics, Blythe is still a whirlwind, barking out the lyrics to ‘Black Label’, ablely aided by a chorus of a few thousand, who went into the below freezing November night (some, without shirts). Killadelphia indeed!

U.K.-based modern thrash heroes SYLOSIS recently completed work on their new album, “Monolith”, with Romesh Dodangoda at Monnow Valley Studio in Wales. The CD will be released on October 5 via Nuclear Blast Records. The cover artwork was created by Dan Goldsworthy and can be seen below.

“Monolith” track listing:

01. Out From Below
02. Fear The World
03. What Dwells Within
04. Behind The Sun
05. The River
06. Monolith
07. Paradox
08. A Dying Vine
09. All Is Not Well
10. Born Anew
11. Enshrined

Commented SYLOSIS vocalist and guitarist Josh Middleton: “We’re beyond pleased with the artwork for ‘Monolith’. It needed to be something to accentuate the dark, gloomy vibe of the album without going for anything too cliché or stereotypically metal.

“We listen to a lot of ’70s progressive music and with the Art Nouveau style was quite popular at that time.

“At this point, we don’t want to reveal too much about the concept but one of the figures on the cover loosely represents the devil in disguise or a satyr. Some of the inspiration behind the concept came from Greek mythology.

“Working with Dan again was awesome. He’s very patient, eager to please and can very quickly tap into what we’re trying to put across.

“We always like to pay as much attention to the artwork as possible and it’s never been an afterthought for us. It’s about creating a complete piece of work so the music and the packaging really go hand in hand.”

Added Goldsworthy: “Visually, the cover artwork for ‘Monolith’ has taken notable inspiration from the Art Nouveau movement. Diverting from the usual flowery aesthetic of the style, ‘Monolith’ has a significantly darker vein running thoughout, as fitting with the sonic nihilism of SYLOSIS‘ music. As far as the concept goes, it is merely my interpretation of the band’s vision. Much like their previous album, ‘Edge Of The Earth’, the artwork is completely related to certain themes running throughout the songs, so if you wish to extract any deeper meaning, I would recommend studying the lyrics as well.

Josh and I kept a very close working relationship throughout the entire design process, such was the importance of having the artwork represent his lyrics and the story they tell. However, the cover art and illustrations throughout the packaging are only small snapshots of the bigger picture so open the booklet, press play and enjoy the journey.”

Middleton recently stated about “Monolith”: “‘Monolith’ is the best representation of us as a band in terms of our diverse influences and stylistically it’s what we’ve always been aiming for. A mixture of thrash, big doomy riffs and dark atmospherics and ambience.

“Overall, ‘Monolith’ has a darker vibe to anything we’ve done in the past, both lyrically and musically. It’s a concept album which is just something I like to help guide me writing the lyrics. I like the fact that I can write about personal issues but dress them up in a way that people might not know exactly how they relate to me (if at all in some instances).

“The idea for the concept was very loosely inspired by the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. It’s quite far fetched but it’s about this guy who loses his wife and tries to bring her back from underworld. This giant monolith starts to grow out of her tomb. The most prevalent theme beneath it all is sort of accepting that you might not be as nice a person as you once thought. It sounds really cheesy but everyone has a darker side to their personality in terms of being selfish, manipulative or dishonest.

“A lot of metal lyrics are always ‘you’re this, you’re that, you suck’ and in a lot of cases it’s probably really hypocritical. Some of the lyrics on this album are about owning up to those flaws and almost reveling in it.

“Some parts of the album is us covering new ground but everything that people have come to love about our band is still present. It’s not necessarily a change in direction or something we’re moving more towards, it was just about making a unique vibe for this album as a whole. There’s a real urgency to a lot of this material and the really natural and honest production helps mirror that. We really wanted more of a ‘live session’ feel. Both Romesh and Jens [Bogren; mastering] have done a great job in giving this album a unique sound. Too many bands these days rely on technology and it can just suck all the life and personality out of the music.”
