Bergen-based DARK ESSENCE RECORDS, the Norwegian label whose roster features not only some of the most respected and long- standing Black and Extreme Metal artists in the business, but also some of the most talented upcoming bands, showcases no less than seven of its bands at this year’s Inferno Festival. One of Europe’s foremost music festivals Inferno takes place annually in Oslo, and this year runs for four days from the 27th to the 30th March http://www.infernofestival.net

InfernoFestival2013

Opening night of the festival, which is effectively the club night, sees four of the bands appearing at Blå . Post Rockers KRAKOW (http://www.krakowofficial.com), whose critically acclaimed sophomore album “diin” was release in Autumn of last year, kick off the evening at 21:00, followed by Melodic Extreme Metallers COR SCORPII (http://www.corscorpii.net), who are currently working on their next album. Third band on will be VULTURE INDUSTRIES (http://www.vulture-industries.net), a band whose skilled interpretation of avant-garde extreme metal, coupled with the highly theatrical and manic performance of frontman Bjornar Nilsen, makes for a fascinating live show. Topping the bill will be HELHEIM (http://helheim.com) one of the original Norwegian Viking Metal bands who celebrate their historical roots both in their music and in the visual effects used in their live performances, and who have been together for over twenty years. Information about how to get to Blå can be found at http://www.blaaoslo.no

Thursday 28th sees another band celebrate its twentieth anniversary when TAAKE headlines on the Rockefeller stage at 23:00. TAAKE frontman HOEST will also be holding a signing session at 15:00 in the Shadowland record store (http://www.shadowland.no), Torggata 36 (200 meters from the Rockefeller). Formed in 1993, TAAKE’s contribution to the Norwegian Black Metal Scene has been considerable; with founder Hoest remaining true to his Black Metal roots, whilst still being able to breathe life and originality into the genre even after twenty years. The band recently released “Gravkamre, Kroner og Troner” (Tombs, Crowns and Thrones), a double Anniversary CD which feature exclusive new tracks as well as rare and previously unreleased material, alternative versions of previously released tracks and recordings that have, until now, only been available on vinyl. AETERNUS will hit the Rockeffeler stage on Friday 29th at 19:45, a few days in advance of the release of “…And The Seventh His Soul Detesteth”, the band’s seventh full-length album.Founded in 1993 by guitarist and frontman Ares, AETERNUS has re-emerged seven years after the release of their last album “Hexaeon” with a new line up that comprises Ares on guitars and vocals, Phobos (GRAVDAL, MALSAIN) on drums and Specter on guitars. One of the pioneers of what the band calls “Dark Metal”, AETERNUS’ sound combines features from both Black Metal and Death Metal with superlative guitar playing and occasional haunting, melodic interludes. More information about AETERNUS can be found athttps://www.facebook.com/Aeternusofficial

Saturday 30th, the last day of the festival, also sees the last of the DARK ESSENCE RECORDS bands to appear. HADES ALMIGHTY will play on the Rockefeller Stage at 19:45, and, incidentally, they were one of the bands who performed at the very first Inferno Festival in 2001. Apart from the occasional live appearance from the trio of Janto on Bass and Lead Vocals, Jorn on Guitars and Synth and Remi on Drums and vocals, things have been relatively quiet since the re-release in 2004 of their 2001 classic “The Pulse of Decay”, but the band has been busy behind the scenes working on the next album. More information about HADES ALMIGHTY can be found at http://www.hades-almighty.com/

Tracks from all the releases of the above bands on DARK ESSENCE RECORDS can be heard below.

Six tracks from TAAKE, including “Et Pust av Oeyne” from “Gravkamre, Kroner og Troner” can be heard below.

The official video for the track“Nordbundet” from the TAAKE album “Noreg’s Vaapen” can be seen below.

According to the Arab television network Al Arabiya, Norwegian black metallers TAAKE have sparked outrage after being nominated for a prestigious Norwegian music award despite having written lyrics that are allegedly anti-Islamic.

TAAKE‘s “Noregs Vaapen” album, along with the latest releases from INSENSE, SHINING, VREID and ÅRABROT, has been nominated in the “Metal” category at the 40th annual Spellemann awards (the Norwegian equivalent to the Grammy Awards). The largest and oldest Norwegian music awards show will be held Saturday, January 14 at Folketeateret in Oslo, Norway and will be broadcast live on the Norwegian channel NRK1.

TAAKE‘s critics argue that the lyrics in the band’s song “Orkan” (Hurricane) are xenophobic as they include the phrase “To hell with Muhammad and the Mohammedans” and their “unforgivable customs.”

However, Hoest, TAAKE‘s front man, has refuted these claims and said that their sole intention was to criticize religion. “Our view, in the name of freedom of expression, is that it is shameful to adhere to Christianity or Islam,” he said.

Marte Thorsby, chairman of the prize committee’s board, denied any allegations that the judges had not properly listened to the album before its nomination. “We enjoy full freedom of expression in Norway and a Spellemann jury is not going to censor content in any way,” she told the Aftenposten newspaper.

Hoest previously found himself at the center of controversy in March 2007 after he appeared on stage in Essen, Germany with a swastika symbol drawn on his chest. This led to the cancellation of the band’s European tour and outrage among many heavy metal fans across Germany.

Hoest responded to the controversy by saying, “We truly apologize to all of our collaborators who might get [into] problems because of the Essen swastika scandal, except for the Untermensch (subhuman) owner of that club; you can go suck a Muslim.”

TAAKE‘s most recent statement takes a slightly less offensive tone: “TAAKE has never been a political band, and we do not encourage either violence or racism.”

Norwegian progressive extreme metallers VULTURE INDUSTRIES will be joined by TAAKE frontman Hoest for two special performances in February. The first of the two dates will take place on February 3 at Dirty Skunks, in the Kino Siska, an old movie theatre in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Entrance to this show will be free, as the venue will be celebrating its tenth anniversary. The second date will be on February 4 at Blue Hell in Budapest, and will mark VULTURE INDUSTRIES‘ first-ever appearance in Hungary.

Based in Bergen, and with two critically acclaimed releases on Dark Essence Records under their belts, VULTURE INDUSTRIES‘ lineup is composed of Bjornar Nilsen (BLACK HOLE GENERATOR) on vocals, keyboards and programming, Øyvind Madsen (SULPHUR, ex-ENSLAVED) and Eivind Huse (SULPHUR) on guitar, Kyrre Teigen on bass and Tor Helge Gjengedal (ex-TAAKE) on drums.

Nilsen, who also happens to be TAAKE‘s producer, is known for his highly theatrical on-stage performances, and the additional appearance of Hoest, one of black metal’s most dynamic frontmen, is an indication that these two shows promise to be something very special.

On November 18, members from high profile Norwegian metal bands, including DARKTHRONE, SATYRICON and TAAKE, will take part in a live show called “Algir – Støttekonsert For Jonas R. Christiansen”, at Bergen’s prime rock venue, Garage. The aim? Raise awareness for colon cancer. In addition, HELHEIM, GRAVDAL and SLAVIA themselves will perform in order to help raise funds and provide 31-year-old Jonas Christiansen with a chance to fight the disease.

Diagnosed with colon cancer earlier this year, the SLAVIA vocalist has gone through conventional treatment at Norwegian hospital Haukeland in Bergen but the prognosis has remained the same. After much deliberation amongst Jonas, friends and N.I.F.A.B. (Norwegian Institute For Alternative Treatment), Danish International Clinic for Cancer Treatment Humlegaarden was picked as the best place to help extend Christiansen‘s life. By arranging this live show, the organizers hope to raise enough money for Jonas to get additional treatment aside that which he has already received at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen.

Born and brought up in Kongsberg in the Eighties, Jonas Christiansen put his original band SLAVIA on hiatus and moved to Oslo to concentrate on Moonfog Productions‘ newly-signed band DISIPLIN in 2003. While their self-titled debut album quickly shot them onto the national and international stratosphere through their contagious, mid-tempo riffs intermittently layered around chilly black metal blast beats, it was their second album, “Anti-Life”, that saw the Norwegian ensemble truly owning their musical skills. As DISIPLIN went through a variety of personnel changes in 2005, Christiansen moved back to Bergen and resurrected his original project SLAVIA which released debut album, “Strength And Vision”, through Drakkar in 2007. A third album is planned to be released in early 2012 — if Jonas‘s health improves.

If you cannot make this show, you can also help Jonas Christensen by donating to the Jonas R. Christiansen‘s fund here.

“Algir – Støttekonsert For Jonas R. Christiansen” participating artists:

* Nocturno Culto (DARKTHRONE)
* Satyr (SATYRICON)
* Frost (SATYRICON)
* Hoest (TAAKE)
* SLAVIA
* HELLHEIM
* GRAVDAL

“Nordbundet”, the new video from Norwegian black metallers TAAKE, can be seen below. Directed by Torgeir Ness Sundli, the clip is a mix of live footage of the band interspersed with scenes of the countryside around TAAKE‘s home town of Bergen, which have been filmed by founder and frontman Hoest, who also produced the video. Audio production is by Bjørnar E. Nilsen.

TAAKE‘s fifth full-length album, “Noregs Vaapen”, was released in Europe on September 20 via Dark Essence Records and will be made available on November 1 in the USA.

“Noregs Vaapen” was a much-anticipated release from the band that is now seen as one of the leaders of the Norwegian black metal scene. While never losing TAAKE‘s traditional sound and atmosphere with its icy riffs, its melodies redolent of Norway’s history, and distinctive vocals, Hoest has not hesitated to add a few twists that have taken everyone by surprise and kept the music fresh and original, including the use of the banjo on one track. The addition of guest appearances by some of black metal’s elite, including Nocturno Culto (DARKTHRONE), Attila Csihar (MAYHEM), Demonaz (IMMORTAL) and Skagg (GAAHLSKAGG, DEATHCULT) as well as producer and VULTURE INDUSTRIES frontman Bjørnar E. Nilsen have added a further dimension to “Noregs Vaapen”.

TAAKE will celebrate the release of the album with a special live set at Det Akademiske Kvarter in Bergen on September 30, and will then head out for a European tour in October with fellow Bergen blackened metallers BYFROST and the U.K.’s DONN THE PHILOSOPHY.

The past few years have seen Norway’s TAAKE busier than ever before with numerous tours around the world and increased productivity. With its fifth studio offering, “Noregs Vaapen”, TAAKE has refined its respected black metal sound, expanding this time around to include new elements. The album is filled with Hoest‘s trademark riffs, melodies and vocals, but also embraces the unpredictable — more black ‘n’ roll grooves, ice-cold mellotrons and Southern-inspired banjo. It is, without a doubt, TAAKE‘s most diverse and unique recording to date.

Due on November 1 via Candlelight Records, “Noregs Vaapen” was produced by Bjørnar E. Nilsen (DEAD TO THIS WORLD, THE BATALLION, HELHEIM, VULTURE INDUSTRIES) and features guest appearances by Nocturno Culto (DARKTHRONE), Attila Csihar (MAYHEM) and Demonaz (IMMORTAL).

“Noregs Vaapen” track listing:

01. Fra Vadested Til Vaandesmed
02. Orkan
03. Nordbundet
04. Du Ville Ville Vestland
05. Myr
06. Helvetesmakt
07. Dei Vil Alltid Klaga Og Kyta

In 2005, EMPEROR surprised all with an unannounced appearance at Oslo’s famed Inferno festival. Following the performance, the band announced additional concerts that would include a visit to America; marking the second trip to the States in the band’s legendary career.
