SLAYER guitar legend Jeff Hanneman tragically passed away suddenly on May 2nd. Today, Slayer members Tom Araya and Kerry King issued the following joint statement to their fans in the UK/Europe:

“We know that our fans everywhere are hurting for the loss of Jeff just as we are .We want to let you all know that when we come to Europe this summer in June, July and August, we’ll ALL be making noise together for our brother and dear friend Jeff… We’ll see you then!”

Slayer’s very busy summer schedule can be viewed at this location. It is still unknown if drummer Dave Lombardo will join the band on these dates.

SLAYER singer Tom Araya spoke with Andrew Haug from AndrewHaug.com – Australia’s Only Dedicated 24/7 Rock-Metal Station – at the Melbourne stop of Soundwave 2013. He was asked about the status of guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who was hospitalized in early 2011 with necrotizing fasciitis (likely rooted in a spider bite) and continues to this day in recovery-mode. The band has since enlisted EXODUSGary Holt for live shows.

“Even though he’s not in the picture, he’s still part of the picture,” Araya says. “It’s taken him a lot longer than he even thought. He can play and he can work out the material but… It’s like everything else, depending on how you are health-wise as a person, that affects how you heal. Even though you haven’t seen him live, he’s still part of the band.”

David Farrier from Australia’s 3 News spoke with SLAYER frontman Tom Araya during the band’s Soundwave appearance in Australia recently where he had just played to 25,000 people.

“To me it’s all new, to me it’s always new,” he says. “When we play to big crowds it still surprises me.”

“The only difference with me now is I can’t headbang anymore as I have a plate,” Araya adds. “I can’t do that which is a bum out. That’s something I enjoy doing, and now I can’t. It’s an internal struggle, you know what I mean? I can still go out there and scream my ass off, and play a mean bass and smile a lot.”

SLAYER frontman Tom Araya has shed more light on the current state of the band which sees EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt continuing to fill-in for the ailing Jeff Hanneman and a contract dispute with drummer Dave Lombardo which saw the band replace him this week with former drummer Jon Dette (also ANTHRAX).

Speaking to Christina Rowatt from Soundwave TV, Araya talked about the status of Hanneman: “He’s had a rough time coming back. I reach out to him all the time and tell him that everybody misses him. I miss him as a band member because he’s such a big focal point in the band. We’re waiting for him to say ‘I’m ready.’ He’s actually working on material for the album which we’ve encouraged him to do.”

Meanwhile, Jon Dette was originally behind the kit for Slayer for three years in the 1990s and is a last-minute replacement for Dave Lombardo.

“He actually played in the band for, like, three years,” says Araya. “It’s gonna be good. He’s matured and I’m sure he’s gotten much better on the drums. It’ll be exciting, and I think that’s just gonna pump everything up even more. I can tell you this: Jon’s gonna have a lot of energy. He’s known to play very fast, and he’s gotten better at that.”

When asked why Dette got the job Araya says: “It was just a name that we pulled out of our hat. It was a huge fucking hat, and it had one name in it. I’m kind of excited because I know it’s going to be good.”

Tom Araya

In June, 2011, Slayer bassist/vocalist Tom Araya received the key to his birth city Viña del Mar, Chile from Mayor Virginia Reginato for Musical Career Recognition. This is the first official recognition of Chile to Tom Araya, who left Chile at five years of age with his family for the US.

SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya recently spoke to Gary Graff of Billboard.com about the band’s plans for the remainder of the year after it wraps its run on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival in early August. “We’ll probably get together and start writing together and start making a new album,” he said. “I think after [Mayhem] we’ll just go back to the drawing board and take a look at what we’ve got and start putting it together. These days we’re a bit more like, ‘Let’s see what comes out.’ We don’t chomp at the bit like we did in the early days. You just sort of have to let it happen and see what the end result is, and hopefully we’ll like it…Everything we’ve done as a band has been like that — ‘Wow, let’s do it.’ We know the outcome is going to be good.”

Regarding the status of guitarist Jeff Hanneman — who in January 2011 contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since — Araya said, “Jeff‘s had a long ordeal. He’s working on his playing ability, and that’s something that’s gonna take some time. He’s working on strengthening his arm and his ability to play. He can play, but it’s not for an extended period of time. Like anything else when you have some kind of not only muscle damage but nerve damage, it takes a bit for a lot of your functions to come back. They’re not going to come back and easy and quick.”

He added, “On this [latest tour] more than others it’s dawned on me that he’s not there. The audiences have been very favorable, capacity crowds, really good. I just kind of look out and think, ‘Jeff, God, where are you? You worked 30 years for this. You should be here.’ He should be enjoying this part of his career. I can’t wait for him to (be back).”

AOL‘s Noisecreep conducted an interview with SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya at the opening show of this year’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival on June 30 at San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, California. Araya spoke about being honored with the keys to the city of Vina del Mar, his Chilean hometown, how he balances his Catholic faith with some of SLAYER‘s edgier material, his appreciation of country music, and perhaps most poignantly, Araya‘s feelings about being away from his family on the road — and the pain it causes him. You can watch the chat below.

In a recent interview with MTV‘s “Alternative Nation”, SLAYER guitarist Kerry King stated about fellow SLAYER axeman Jeff Hanneman‘s current state of health (Jeff in January 2011 contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since), King said, “Jeff is… If you look at him, he looks fine. But playing the intricate things that we do, he’s not ready to do that. He doesn’t know if he has the stamina for an hour-and-fifteen-minute set. He can play any of the slower stuff and do it just like the record. But we made a name for ourselves, historically, for being good live, so we had to make the decision and say, ‘You’ve gotta get better before you try to come back. If you come back, make it a special thing, not just an adequate thing.’”

King also spoke about SLAYER‘s rumored plans to release a two-song EP this summer, possibly to coincide with the band’s appearance at the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. “[The two new SLAYER tracks] are done, but they’re just not mixed,” he said. “It’s [like], do you put them out now or do you just wait for the [full-length] record to be done [and include them as part of the final package]? We’re gona finish the record September-October. So I, myself, would rather wait, because I don’t like to put those two songs out and then include them on the record. In my thinking, if you put those two songs out, then make ten more songs and put those two on that album just as an afterthought. But I feel like I’ve gotta give people ten new songs. That’s why on the last one [2009's 'World Painted Blood'] we did 11, ’cause ‘Psychopathy Red’ was already out. So [the two new songs are] done. We’ll see what the record company proposes. I think they’ve been talking about an EP, which is kind of a throwback to the ’80s, which is really cool, I think. But we’ll just have to see.”

EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt is filling in for Hanneman on SLAYER‘s summer tour, which kicked off at the end of May at All Tomorrow’s Parties in England.
