Frontman from Finnish thrash/sleeze metallers TORNADO, Superstar-Joey Severance, has checked in from the studio with an update from the third day of recording new album “Black President”:
Tuomas celebrating the end of his rhythm guitar tracking!
We have had another long session here today. Henri finished the last two of his bass tracks this morning and Timo followed by completing all his rhythm tracks and is now working on leads. It’s a little after 2 in the morning and most of us have been awake since 9:30 for the 10AM starting time. No rest for the wicked they say and wicked would be one way to describe the sounds that are blasting out of the speakers at any given moment!
Henri laying down some thunderous bass in the middle of the night! The bass sound on this album is HUGE! \m/
By tomorrow we should have a posse coming in to contribute to backing vocals and then I can start doing lead vocals hopefully in the night. This time around I had the benefit of doing pre-production work on all the songs which should give me a better idea of what I will be doing. For the debut album, “Amsterdamn, Hellsinki” I recorded almost all of the vocals in one day (Including double tracking), something I surely won’t be repeating this time around.
Our time here at Studio 33 is almost over for the basic recording in which we will take some time off to rest our ears before coming back for the final mix. From where I sit right now the songs sound huge and bombastic. Something which I hope carries over when all is said and done. Speed? Check! Sleeze? Check! Shredding? Check! Yup…..all the ingredients that make Tornado what it is are there.
Frontman from Finnish thrash/sleeze metallers TORNADO, Superstar-Joey Severance, has checked in from the studio with an update from the second day of recording new album “Black President”:
The second day has passed and all of the drums and Tuomas’ guitars are recorded. Henri has started laying down the bass and the sound is as heavy as King Kong causing massive destruction over Tokyo! Luckily for us, Henri is also familiar with the recording software being used so we were able to continue recording late into the night when everyone went home. If the truth be told, it feels like the inmates taking over the asylum. It’s still boring as hell for me because I don’t have anything to do yet other than to listen to the songs and make sure that everything is correct. Unlike the recording sessions for the “Amsterdamn, Hellsinki” album, this time I came well prepared with some J’s to help pass the time
Tomorrow morning we will finish the last two bass tracks and then Timo will come in and start his guitars. The songs are finally starting to come alive and for me it’s especially cool to hear the crusty riffs that you wrote while watching the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (or some shit like that) finally start to feel and sound like actual songs. Some people hate being in the studio but I love it. Another thing about Tornado is that we don’t write anything in the studio. All songs are written, rehearsed and finalized before we enter any recording facility and commit to tape.
After a long day of hard work, it’s time to reward the mind and body with a nice J and hot sauna! The work day starts exactly at 10:00am every morning and goes late into the night. Like they say, it’s a long way to the top if you want to Rock n Roll \m/
Finland, Tampere based Thrash/Sleezer band TORNADO‘s frontman Superstar-Joey Severance has checked in from the studio where the band has entered to record their new album, intitled “Black President”:
By the time I arrived here from Helsinki at Studio 33 in Kuopio, Jani (Drums) and Tuomas (Guitar) were already here getting their drum and guitar sounds together as they would be recording simultaneously. Being an observer, the process was quite boring for me but the final result was well worth it as the drums sound like cannons and the guitars are heavy as fuck!
During the course of the day, Jani and Tuomas managed to record 6 songs with the other 5 being left for tomorrow. Of the ten originals on this album (musically speaking), 6 were written by me. 3 by former original guitarist Michiel “Big Maaaaaan” Rutten and 1 by current guitarist Timo Ponni with the last song being a cover of the Loudness track “Dark Desire “ . As per usual with Tornado recordings, there are no triggers and no click tracks being used. The studio itself (especially from the outside) reminds me a lot of Abyss Studio in Sweden where we recorded the debut Tornado album. Both are remotely located which makes for excellent working conditions from the perspective that there are no distractions and both have very relaxed working atmospheres. As the day progressed, we were later joined by Henri (Bass) and Timo (Guitar) which was cool having all of us here at the same time.
The songs on this album are quite diverse but very much in the vein of what Tornado does best, which is write catchy as fuck Thrash Metal. Tomorrow we will finish off the remaining songs
Finland, Tampere based Thrash Sleeze band TORNADO‘s frontman Superstar-Joey Severance has issued the following update:

Finnish/American sleazy thrashers TORNADO are back with new music after the release of their Debut album “Amsterdamn, Hellsinki” on Listenable Records two years ago. The band will enter 5K Studio in Hellsinki, Finland this December under the watchful eye of Amorphis drummer Jan Rechberger and bassist Niclas Etelavuori who will handle the production duties to record their follow up “Black President” for an early 2014 release.
Commented singer Superstar Joey Severance: “I am very excited to be finally putting the finishing touches on the songs that will become the next Tornado album. We are working quite hard to write the catchiest, sleaziest and thrashiest material that we can at this time and I am personally stoked to introduce the new members of the band to the world. The guys are young and hungry and together we are aiming to make a dent within the metal community. We hope that these two new songs will hold people over until we do the proper recording. Lyrically speaking, “Black President” is not a pro Obama song as it is an anti-stupidity one while “David and Goliath” deals with the serious and often unspoken subject of bullying”

Ladies and Gentlemen! It’s time to lock your daughters in the attic and arm your sons as the Tornado gang is back in action! After packing up and leaving The Netherlands and relocating to Finland, I, Superstar Joey Severance have scanned this cold wasteland in search of the coolest cats to be found to finish what I’ve started! It is with absolute pleasure that I introduce to you on Guitars the Dynamic Duo of Tuomas Leskinen and Timo Ponni! On the Bass we have Henri Soisalo and rounding things off on the Drums with those sexy beats will be Jani Niemelä.
Our immediate plans are to enter the studio sometime next month to record some new music to release to the public as a preview of our next album which will be recorded sometime later in the year as well as gearing up to finally make Tornado a LIVE act. We hope to be ready to start devastating stages and cities as early as May. Thanks to everyone for the patience and support thus far. Let the madness begin!! \m/
