And what am I up to this time if not for fresh progressive metal from the hot middle east. As they say on their FB page, “The band started their journey in 2009, when the composer and keyboardist Yoav Efron met the drummer Yogev Gabay and the two started working together…Distorted Harmony works to establish itself as Israel’s leading progressive metal band and aspires to be recognized as one of the leading international bands in Prog/Metal and other musical scenes”. Their debut album “Utopia” was released earlier this year and gained noticeable success among the local scene; the band performed numerous times, including in the Progstage festival held in Israel in October, with major bands such as Pain of Salvation and Orphaned Land.

The album opens up with the rather light “Kono Yume” that proves to be a track that combines light bass-based melodies with distortion-filled bridges. I was surprised to hear death metal blast beats in the end of the track (and in various places along the album as well), for it wasn’t what I expected from a piece that melodic and some say “soft”.
The album carries on with “Breathe”, a track that has more symphonic volume compared to its predecessor, but it keeps the same direction nonetheless.

Obsession”, “Blue” and “Unfair” follows up and continues with the continuous duet of the band between hushed and louder parts. There are some parts in those couple of songs that one cannot remain indifferent to, such as the intro in “Obsession” with its impossible time signature, the chorus in “Blue” or the outro in “Unfair”. Highly recommended!

The album comes to its end with the “Utopia” track. I like to think the band wants us to consider this one as their epitome of this album, with its length and strong message that lurks beneath the music. The song hits us with quiet violin sounds, bearing resemblance to music you hear when you watch films about World War II; it goes on with rhythmic paradigms that lead into the song itself, when the verses come in and Misha’s wonderful voice kicks in.

Now, anyone who knows a little about progressive metal is familiar with Dream Theater, and that’s the elephant in the room. The band shows great resemblance to the American proggers, mostly due to their musical style, which includes complex time signatures, soft melodies as well as brutal parts, and many more intriguing elements. But as much they are alike, they are also different; It is noticed that DT is a much more experienced and diverse with their material (Without forgetting the fact they’re around for a few decades).
To conclude, “Utopia” is a great album that’ll fit in any rational progger’s playlist for a long time, until their next album and beyond.

Heavy metal band Zenith Reunion from Oulu, Finland, almost sensationally wedged it’s way straight to 9. place on Finland’s official album sales chart on Thursday, 3.5.2012. A bunch of cold hard representatives of the same genre were left behind, as ”Utopia” was almost sold out on pre-sale before it’s release on 25.4.2012.

Finnish music magazine ”Rumba” ranked Utopia even higher on their list, the only one who got higher was Finnish rap artist Paleface, so Zenith Reunion was to reach second place on Rumba’s chart. ”This is pretty unbelieveable, thanks to all you guys who have bought our album so far.” was commented from inside the band.

Earlier in the spring Zenith Reunion released news about a deal concerning theme- and background music on Finnish TV channel MTV3 MAX and it’s Finnish Rally Championship show. The co-operation continues and their music shall also be heard as theme music on ”Future Cup”. The first broadcast is due 10.5.2012 at 20:30 (EET+2) on MTV3 MAX. Northern Finland band Zenith Reunion  will be hitting our streets and ears hard come April 25th, with their metal combining heavy influences like that of: Stone, Tarot, Zero Nine, Accept, Dream Theater. The exceptionally beautifully pieced together guitar progressions and the overwhelming bass and drums creating itself a fort of sheer magnitudes has this band making an impression not only vocally but also musically.

With high octane progressions in ‘Can’t feel the Pain’ you are led into an almost ‘Joe Satriani’ feel and movement where the music carries these anthems deep to the point of destruction. As soon as ‘Jouni Juurikka’ starts his vocals everything changes, add to this the mixture between the backing vocals you have yourself a very catchy song. Solos beyond the average metal band putting them in lines with that of ‘Marty Friedman, Jason Becker’. ‘Naked Boy’ has a start almost too gentle with that ‘Steve Vai – Celluloid Heroes’ feel to it, with the gentle progressions of drums and bass riding this atmospheric song into its own dimension. Again the contrast between the vocalists and the music keeps you hooked to the music, and this is only song 2!
As you progress through the album you will eventually make your way to the very emotional ‘FF’ where all things that could be possible in one song become alive. With the Tapping sequence in ‘Darkness Fall’ to the standards of ‘Cacophony’ and the mixture of riffs between hard rock, metal, and blues, this has everything I could ever wish for.

Between the Blues and metal there are so many things going for this band, including the fast power-based riffs, drums to keep the body moving, high octane and beautifully played solo’s, the bass driven articulations and the overall shout out to the music world this album is ideal for those that like great rock/heavy metal.

Jouni Juurikka: Lead vocals
Jukka Uusi-Illikainen: Guitar & backing vocals
Jukka Ihme: Guitar & backing vocals
Jukka Jokikokko: Bass & backing vocals (BURNING POINT, STARGAZERY)
Ville Hanhisuanto: Drums & backing vocals
