According to The Pulse Of Radio, VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen has been named the greatest guitarist of all time in a new poll sponsored by Guitar World magazine. Almost half a million votes were cast in the survey, which was the first ever commissioned by Guitar World on this subject. The tournament-style poll began in April with a total of 132 guitarists that were gradually winnowed down to the final match-up between Van Halen and QUEEN axeman Brian May, with Van Halen beating out May with 62 percent of the vote.

May was no slouch, creating an upset situation by knocking off Jeff Beck, George Harrison, Les Paul, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix before going head to head with Van Halen. The latter also polled against contenders like Slash, Joe Satriani and Randy Rhoads on his way to the top spot.

27,000 people voted online in the final round between Van Halen and May.

The top 10 greatest guitarists of all time, as voted by the readers of Guitar World magazine, are as follows:

01. Eddie Van Halen (VAN HALEN)
02. Brian May (QUEEN)
03. Alex Lifeson (RUSH)
04. Jimi Hendrix
05. Joe Satriani (CHICKENFOOT)
06. Jimmy Page (LED ZEPPELIN)
07. Tony Iommi (BLACK SABBATH)
08. Steve Ray Vaughan
09. “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott (PANTERA)
10. Steve Vai

Eddie Van Halen has appeared on the cover of Guitar World 21 times.

Van Halen is currently recuperating at home after having intestinal surgery last month. The band came off the road midway through a summer tour and will resume its live performance sometime in 2013.

Eddie‘s son and bass player, Wolfgang, has been keeping busy by playing in Mark Tremonti‘s touring band, while singerDavid Lee Roth has been amusing himself by making videos in which he speaks on a number of topics.

VAN HALEN has released the following statement:

Eddie Van Halen underwent an emergency surgery for a severe bout of diverticulitis. No further surgeries are needed and a full recovery is expected within four [to] six months.

VAN HALEN‘s scheduled November 2012 tour of Japan is currently being rescheduled and the band looks forward to seeing and playing for their fans in 2013.”

According to WebMD, diverticulosis happens when pouches (diverticula) form in the wall of the colon. If these pouches get inflamed or infected, it is called diverticulitis. Diverticulitis can be very painful.

VAN HALEN recently canceled the 31 North American tour dates it initially postponed in May.

Both singer David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen denied rumors that they were fighting again on the road, with fatigue and an over-ambitious schedule given as the reasons for curtailing the group’s live work.

Eddie told Guitar World in a new interview that the band intends to stick around for a while, saying, “It feels more like a band and a family than it ever has . . . We’re all very opinionated about things, but it’s all for the benefit of the music.”

The band has been supporting its new album, “A Different Kind Of Truth”, VAN HALEN‘s first album in 14 years and first with Roth since 1984.

A one-hour Japanese TV special on VAN HALEN, which was broadcast on Tuesday (August 7), can now be seen in four parts below.

BS-TBS‘s “Song To Soul” is a series of unique music documentary programs dedicated to songs and the artists who perform them. In each episode, the producers look at an iconic track from the past through the retrospective view of the composers, artists and performers.

The VAN HALEN “Song To Soul” special, focusing entirely on the single “Jump” from the band’s smash hit album “1984″, features brand-new interviews with David Lee Roth and Eddie and Alex Van Halen, filmed just two weeks ago at Dave‘s house. Also interviewed for the program were VAN HALEN producer Ted Templeman, Guitar World editor-in-chief Brad Tolinski and Margo Nahas, the creator of the “1984″ album cover.

“Jump” introduced VAN HALEN to the 1980s pop audience and its success helped the band cross over from hard-rock icons to pop-rock superstars.

“I actually wrote it on a Prophet 10 and everytime I got the sound I wanted, the thing would start smoking,” explained Eddie. “So I got rid of that one, bought an Oberheim OB-Xa. That sound actually did not exist. We made that sound popular. All synthesizers after ‘Jump’ came out, came with that sound in it.”

‘Jump’ was actually recorded on the first or second take, was the record version,” said Alex. “And then you spend another hundred takes to justify why it was so easy to record in one time. And that goes to demonstrate how people really get in the way of the creative process; your own ego wants to be in there and justify why it’s so good.”

Although Templeman initially thought that Roth‘s lyrics for “Jump” were written about someone who’s “going to commit suicide,” the producer began to understand the song’s true meaning after an explanation by the singer.

“It’s a commitment to a forward space,” said Roth. “There’s no wasted days. There’s no timing moves, like in chess. You’re always moving ahead, and maybe the only rationale that you can use is, Hey, might as well..’ That may be all you need to compel you into the next big move in your life, or your next big mistake. Either way, at least you have a life worth living, a live well-lived in.”

“Jump” is the only VAN HALEN single to reach No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

As previously reported, Eddie Van Halen and his son, VAN HALEN bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, gave a rare joint interview to USA Today on June 13 in which they discussed the reason for the band canceled more than 30 summer tour dates following a June 26 show in New Orleans. Eddie explained, “We bit off more than we could chew. This record took a lot out of us. And we went on tour earlier than we wanted to so we could play Madison Square Garden (in March, before a renovation), and that threw the schedule out of whack.

Eddie added that “a lot of the canceled dates were in cities we already played,” but promised that VAN HALEN will return to U.S. stages later on: “In November, we’ll hit Japan, and in the New Year, we’ll possibly do something special, but I can’t talk about it.

When the canceled shows were announced, rumors originally began circulating that Eddie and singer David Lee Roth were feuding again. But Eddie denied that, saying, “Dave‘s the same as he’s always been, funny, witty. Sometimes I can only take that in small doses, because he just goes on and on.”

Wolfgang added, “He’s like the Energizer Bunny — wind it up and see what happens,” while his father said, “But Dave always lands on his feet.

Roth himself posted a video message online explaining the scrapped dates, saying that “the band is getting along famously, better than we have in quite some time . . . (but) if we continue past July 4 and all the way into Australia and Japan then we’re asking for the robot zombie tour.”

In the August 2012 issue of Guitar World magazine, legendary VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen spoke about the group’s future in glowing terms and dismissed rumors that the he and his bandmates were having a hard time getting along on the road.

“We truly are a band; it’s not just a one-off thing,” he said. “I don’t want to say it’s a rebuilding process. If anything it’s continuation. It feels more like a band and a family than it ever has, and not just because three-quarters of it is family.”

He added, “Working with Dave [Lee Roth, vocals] has been very productive. We’re all very opinionated about things, but it’s all for the benefit of the music. We’re working together better than ever. I can see, I see us doing this for a long, long time. When things feel right, why the hell not keep doing it?

“I can’t think of anyone on the planet who is more lucky and blessed. Not only do I get to play with my brother but I also get to play with my son. If my dad was still here now, that would really make things amazing. I have a wonderful wife, wonderful friends, and a son who doesn’t smoke, drink or do drugs. I’m just a guitarist in a kick-ass rock and roll band. What more could I ask for?”

Eddie‘s son Wolfgang joined VAN HALEN in 2007 at the age of 16, replacing original bassist Michael Anthony.

According to a report by Teresa Gubbins from Pegasusnews.com, the roots of the artwork for VAN HALEN’s long-awaited reunion album A Different Kind Of Truth are coming to light.

The cover showing a streamlined Art-Deco train came from a photo that resides at Southern Methodist University’s DeGolyer Library.

According to a release from SMU, Van Halen singer David Lee Roth sent his idea for a cover, one that included a photo of the 1930s-era Henry Dreyfuss-designed locomotive, to Los Angeles-based SMOG Design, Inc.

SMOG co-owner John Heiden’s internet search led him to DeGolyer’s collection by the work of Robert Yarnall Richie, an industrial designer known for mid-century modern designs. Richie’s collection of 95,000 negatives, films, manuscripts, and photo equipment was acquired by Everett L. DeGolyer, Jr. in the 1970s.

The reunited Van Halen features singer David Lee Roth, guitar legend Eddie Van Halen, brother/drummer Alex Van Halen and Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen on bass.

According to The Pulse Of Radio, former Warner Bros. Records executive Ted Cohen aleges in a new LA Weekly interview that VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen‘s first wife, actress Valerie Bertinelli, was at least partly responsible for the group’s 1985 split with singer David Lee Roth. Cohen, who was an artist development director at the label during the band’s early years, said that the arrival of Bertinelli in Eddie‘s life around 1980 began to drive a wedge between the guitarist and his bandmates.

Cohen said that Bertinelli believed that Eddie should receive the bulk of the credit for the band’s success, with Roth being replaceable. Cohen disagreed, saying, “David was an integral part of the band’s success. He was brilliant.” Cohen added that Eddie began to distance himself from the rest of the band, although he claims that Eddie finally admitted to Cohen one night at a bar that marrying Bertinelli was a “terrible mistake.”

Although the couple stayed together for more than two decades, Cohen said it was no surprise that Roth returned to the group in 2007, two years after Eddie and Bertinelli divorced. Cohen said, “If Valerie had never appeared on the scene, David would probably have never been kicked out in the first place.”

Reps for both VAN HALEN and Bertinelli did not respond to L.A. Weekly‘s requests for a comment.

Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli had one child, Wolfgang, who is now the bass player in VAN HALEN alongside his father.

In a March 2012 interview with the Detroit radio station WRIF, Bertinelli was asked if she had any words of warning for Roth about how to treat her child on the road. “No, Dave doesn’t need to have any words from me,” she replied. “He’s a grown man, he knows how to treat people. Everything with Dave is water under the bridge. I think he’s doing an amazing job. I run into him very infrequently, but when we do, it’s always pleasant.”

Eddie remarried in 2009 to former publicist Janie Liszewski.

VAN HALEN recently postponed 31 dates on its current North American tour, with the official reason given as fatigue. David Lee Roth posted a video message online explaining the situation, saying that “the band is getting along famously, better than we have in quite some time . . . (but) if we continue past July 4 and all the way into Australia and Japan then we’re asking for the robot zombie tour.”
