Finland has a great underground metal scene and the basic level of Finnish demo bands is very high. Amendfoil is one of the most interesting bands in that scene. The band just moved from a small village called Äetsä to Tampere. I asked the band’s vocalist/guitarist Lassi Mäki-Kala a few questions. Let’s see what Amedfoil is all about.
Amendfoil isn’t as well-known band as it should be so tell us a short version of Amendfoil’s history.
Four friends…Äetsä…2007…Metal…Composing…Recordings…Gigs…Tampere. Those are the main points of the history of Amendfoil.
What does the word ”Amendfoil” mean?
Simo! Fix your foil so we can do some barbeque…
Which bands have given the main influence in Amendfoil’s music?
There is no band that would rise above others. During the years the favorite genres of metal have varied and left their own marks on me. A lot of influences have also been taken outside of metal. All the members of Amendfoil have dissenting favorite genres and bands which variably affect the result.
You have released a few EP discs in a short while and the brilliant ”Act of Grace” is your latest release. From where does Amendfoil scoop all the creativity?
Killing boredom and the lack of hobbies have led to fast song writing and self-recording them.
What do your lyrics tell about?
Human psyche and surroundings.
When will you release your first full length album?
We have planned to go in the middle of nature after next summer and record drum tracks and guitars. Bass and vocals will be handled when it’s possible. Probably the album won’t be ready to release until the end of year 2011. Our aim is to release the album, a web-site and a music video at the same time. So the band will be busy because we try to do almost everything by ourselves.
How would you describe a typical Amendfoil song and how is it made?
We have particularly tried to avoid to make a ”typical Amendfoil song”… But normally it consists squeezable melodies and atmosphere. Writing the song starts quite traditionally from a riff, some chords or melody and I start to stack obscurity around that. Songs are regularly incomplete when they move to rehearsal place where the whole group starts to think about structures and other relevant things. After that I continue working with a song and start everything again. Step by step different parts start to turn to a complete song. Writing the lyrics is the last part of the process.
What kind of live band is Amendfoil?
Energetic chaos full of rocking and feeling.
Tell us your best and the worst gig memory.
Playing on stage of Pakkahuone (Tampere) is definitely one of the best memories. The worst memory includes endless echo hell and enormous two members of audience.
What does your near future contain?
We intend to play as many gigs as possible. But the main mission at the moment is to write new songs and prepare them for gigs.
