Interview with Odium: “It’s Not Fake, This Is Real, This Is Pure.”

Odium is a brutal metal band from France that bows for no-one. This band formed on 2007 is new for me and I can’t seem to find that much information of them but us in Metal Shock Finland got the hunch and are hungry for more!

Nelli: Let’s start this interview with a fairly basic question, could you please tell us a little bit of the band?

Band: Odium was born by a meeting of Sotää and Hellesylt on 2007. The goal of the project was to create music, able to retransmit their hate and disgust for the world we live in. Christo came to complete the crew as guitarist and Odium started to reach the road and released their first demo named “Shadows falling”. On 2009, Cristo left the band and Sotää started to search a new guitarist . « Universal Genocide » was released at this time with Sotää playing guitar, bass and vocals. Finally, after a whole modification of the line up, Ozrib took the bass and Sotää both vocals and guitar. Now, Odium is a solid entity, ready to spread the hatred all over this sick world.

Nelli: And what brought you all together to create music?

Band: The reject of the actual way of life : Hypocrisy, idolatry, materialism, stupidity, passivity…Everything you can see when you turn on your TV or in the everyday life. Decade of humanity is on the way, the end is near and we celebrate it everyday.

Nelli: How does a song making process work for you? Do you do them in a group or is someone playing a bigger part on the process?

Band: Sotää is composing the most parts of the music and shares his ideas and main structures of each song. Then we arrange it together so everyone is involved in the process.
This is a democratic black metal band, and it’s the best way to compose the best !!!!

Nelli: Where do the ideas for the songs come from?

Band: The lyrics come from our aversion of the world. As perversion and stupidity has no limits in the human fate, our source of inspiration is virtual infinite.

Nelli: Who do you see as your idols/inspirations?

Band: We don’t have any idols. We work very hard together to eradicate the influences of other artists.

Nelli: While searching you from the internet I notised that there are quite a few bands named odium, what seperates you from the others?

Band: We don’t care about the other bands or their names. But, the important thing is what they think and what they play. If hate is representative in their philosophy, then « Odium » is a good name after all. (Sotää) For me, we are the most brutal!! it’s impossible to play heavy metal or rock with a band named ODIUM!!!

Nelli: How is it like to be a black metal band in France?

Band: It’s very difficult to play metal due to the lack of gigs and halls to play. The bad reputation is also one handicap. We are not satanists and we are not nazis : We simply hate you and we would be very happy if everyone dies.

Nelli: What the future holds for you?

Band: A pure fucking Armageddon !!! (Sotää) And the 2nd album which will come surely at the end of this year, i have a plan to record and work with Matias Kupiainen, I think that I can find the most powerful and organic album with him.

Nelli: When can we see you performin live in Finland?

Band: Next week if someone is paying the trip !!! Spreading the hate is a priesthood leading some sacrifices, but we cannot lose too much money with gigs. (Sotää) One of my best dreams, is to play at Tuska festival in Helsinki, if someone is interested of the band, assure you that we shall look the best of us!! And if you have any plans contact me.

Nelli: One last guestion I’m dying to ask is, do you do your face paints your self or is someone else doing them? Or did you just born with them?

Band: We’ve got a little help from our roadie. Important thing for us : corpse paint are not an « artifice ». This is a sort of schizophrenic cause when we wear our corpse paints, we truly become the entity known as “Sotää, Hellesylt and Ozrib”. When we scream, when we say “we hate you” on the stage, we truly mean it. It’s not fake, this is real, this is pure.
