Italian RAZA DE ODIO was formed officially in April 2002, although the project was, since some time, in the mind of Peso (Necrodeath‘s drummer) and Paco, guitarist with his flamenco culture and rock nature. The band genre is a new musical mix, Paco‘s Spanish guitar, and the far extreme metal, influenced by bands like Soulfly, Ill Niño, Puya, Brujería.
Some weeks ago I had a chat with RAZA DE ODIO and here’s what we talked about…
Hi Raza De Odio, welcome to Metal Shock, how’re you doing?
El Sargento: Hi, we’re still here trying to do something nasty…
Raza De Odio was formed in 2002, by Paco and Peso (from Necrodeath). Tell me about the birth of the band and what was the initial kick to form it?
Paco: The initial kick was to expand the music which me and Peso used to play as a duo band called “Ninos de Puta Madre” in where we played flamencobilly style music with the drum metal school Of Peso.
That’s right, your sound has flamenco flavors mixed with metal… from where comes this interesting combination?
Paco: It all began during a vacation that me and Peso had in Granada (Spain). I play flamenco guitar since many years, and Peso is an incredible metal drummer. He said “We can mix your guitar style with my way of playing and it might sound interesting”. After two years of gigs with Ninos de Puta Madre we said “now it’s time to do more… and Raza de Odio is the natural consequence of that way of playing that me and Peso did with Ninos De Puta Madre.
Among your instruments, there’s also a spanish acustic guitar… it’s quite an uncommon choice for a metal band… tell me how it founded its way into your band?
Paco: All is built around the classical guitar and not vice versa, you know, otherwise the sound wouldn’t be as particular as it is now in our music.
Can we say you’ve found your sound, or are you still in search of it?
Paco: Always in search of a better sound.
Lopez: We are still in search of it. Any new song is a new step of our sound research.
Also your band name recalls the spanish roots, why this choice?
El Sargento: usually metal bands sing in English, we wanted to do something different and since we’re all fanatic of Spanish culture we chose to sing also in Spanish.
And what are the reasons for your “Hate”, I mean, how it comes out in your songs? And what’s your message that you wanna give to your audience?
Lopez: Hate means an intense feeling or passionate dislike for (someone) or have a strong aversion to (something). We play our music and what we feel. Nothing more and nothing less…There are no special messages. We try to get our music out in the most directly way possible.
Please present us your band members and roles.
Zanna: lead vocal, beers, bothering articles
Christo Machete: drums, and security staff
Lopez: lead guitar, and empty stage diving
El Sargento: bass, rolling cigarettes
Paco: Spanish guitar and dangerous silence
From where come your musical influences?
Lopez: Each band member has a really different background. This creates a devastating mix.
Tell me about your songwriting process and some words also about ideas for your song lyrics, thanks…
El Sargento: the main composers are Paco and Lopez, they come to the reharsal room with some ideas, then Machete and I arrange the song. When a track is done Zanna writes the lyrics and puts some scream over it. The lyrics are usually about politicians abuse against poor people, and the hate that people feel for this situation.
Soon after you had released your promotional CD, you opened a concert for Impaled Nazarene. How was it to play with those finns?
El Sargento: they are completely crazy, in a funny way. And they are even dangerous!
Yep, sometimes we Finns are unpredictable 😉
…In 2004 came out your debut album “La Nueva Alarma”, via Scarlet Records. How it was welcomed by your audience?
Paco: 95 % of all reviews were more than positive, but we were poor in selling figures and we were laid off.
Tell me about your live shows and what kind of contact you have with the audience while you’re on stage…
El Sargento: we want people to be involved in the show, so we make them sing, coming on stage, we encourage them to the stage diving and all that stuff that makes people have more fun.
Talking about the venues and acts, if you’d have a free choice, where and with whom you’d like to play in the future?
Paco: I would like to play with Ci.mi.ci.brother, Politicallymafiacorrect, and Ratones Colorao
Where we can find your music? please give some links, thanks!
El Sargento: our album “La Nueva Alarma” is available only through our official website http://www.razadeodio.com at a very low price.
Now, what plans do you have for Raza De Odio?
Lopez: we are working on the second release and once finished we would like to make an European tour to promote it
The last question, my rite… what are your greetings to your fans and our readers?
El Sargento: thanks for being interested in our music and keep on fighting against injustice!!!
Thanks Guys, for this chat! hope to see you soon on stage… \m/
