MORS SUBITA is a metal band from Oulu, Finland. The band’s been active since 2000 and released 4 demotapes and is now about to release their debut album ”Human Waste Compression” on 21st of September with Violent Journey Records. We were keen to know how is life now, when the album is nearly released.
1. Hi, how are you? How does it feel now that your debut is nearly out? You must be releaved.
Haapsamo: Hi, we’re really satisfied for the result of all the hard work and anxious to see the reception. The whole process was rather hard with low budget and technical problems and now that it’s done, yes we truly are relieved.
Lammassaari: Feels damn good! I´m anxious to go on tour and to find out what people think of our debut.
2.How big of a process was it from start to finish, making this album?
Lammassaari: Most of the songs are composed between 2008-2010, so all the new songs came together quite nicely and I had a clear vision of the album as whole from the get go.
The actual feeling of work hit when the recording sessions started. After the drums where recorded, our rhythm guitarist, Insu, left the band. This was a major set back as he was basically the only one in the band with the know how for pro studio engineering. So I had to step in and take over the rest of the recordings. It was truly an uphill battle with all the technical problems including over 120 unusable guitar tracks, broken computer etc. Fortunately we pulled the whole process through with the help from our dear friends and some external helping hands with the cover art, web design, photographing, video shooting etc. A big thanks belong to those people also!
3. How are you going to promote it from now on?
Haapsamo: Hopefully it promotes itself as being an totally killer album. Naturally we hope to get lots of gigs that does the work also. Traditional medias are also welcome to do the part.
4.Tell us a bit about your song making process?
Lammassaari: Usually, I compose all songs at home and when I´m satisfied, I introduce the songs to the band. Sometimes I write the lyrics and vocal arrangements also, or we collaborate with Haapsamo as we did a lot during the vocal recordings. Haapsamo is still our main lyricist though and starts to work on thelyrics after the music is composed and arranged. Sometimes the song arrangement or a specific idea needs more input from the band, then we just jam on the ideas and try to find solutions together.
5.What inspires you making music?
Haapsamo: From my part it’s mostly a way to unchain some rage and as being a metal head since a child it feels just right form of therapy. I’ll have to say that it is our own music that inspires me mostly. Of course there are lots of great bands and artists that give inspiration to all of us.
Lammassaari: Everyday normal life and all the different emotions it includes. Of course all the music I listen, movies I watch etc. inspire me also, but mostly I try to compose material that I´d want to listen and that makes me feel something.
6. What are your songs about? Any particular issues you like writing about?
Haapsamo: Lyrics are about the decay of human race in general including some social criticism of modern society and antireligious statements. Those are our main themes. It’s quite easy to find something to write about in the world like this being a cynical pessimist filled with senior angst, hahaha.
7.What brought you together in the first place?
Lammassaari: I met Haapala (drums) via my cousin. They pretty much introduced me to metal and playing metal in a band. I was hooked instantly and never looked back. There on we stack together with Haapala and the other members came along by time.
8.Can you tell us a little about every member of the band?
Antti “Hape” Haapsamo is the growler of Mors Subita. Hape is the senior of the band and does most of the lyrics.
Mika Lammassaari is the lead guitarist, backing growler and founder member of Mors Subita. Mika does practically all songs and composing for band. His other band is Eternal Tears of Sorrow.
Mika “June” Junttila is the bassist of the band. Long time member who pound his 5-string like a beast.
Tero Piltonen is Mors Subitas latest addition. He’s the second guitarist and also does backing vocals. Tero will be taking part in the songwriting process in the future. He´s also the growler for the band known as Dark Flood.
Juha Haapala is the drummer and other founder member of Mors Subita. He brings the groove to the Mors Subita sound.
9.Where would you hope to see your band in next few years?
Haapsamo: Everywhere, hah. It would nice to be “big”. Not that we would be hungry to be famous in personal level but if our product would break through and success, that would be fabulous. It would nice to be liked you know, heh. And hopefully we see ourselves making new albums, music videos and lot of gigs worldwide. That’ll be it.
Lammassaari: Making new music, touring as broad as possible and having great time!
10.How about we finish this interview by you guys telling us how you’d convince our readers to buy your upcoming album and come to see your shows?
Haapsamo: If you haven’t already seen our video “The Sermon”, check that out. I think that’ll do the trick. It gives you the evidence and reason to see our live shows and to get your own piece of Human Waste Compression!
Lammassaari: After watching our music videos for “The Sermon” and “Burden” don’t think that’s all we can offer you. There´s definitely more killer tunes on our debut! Just order it here à http://äx.fi/P282713 and I guarantee you won´t be disappointed!
Mika: Thanks for the interview and see you on our gigs! Cheers!
Thank you for this interview and hope to see you live in Helsinki soon!
Antti “Hape” Haapsamo: …..Thanks to you and see ya there.
