THE SUICIDER was found by Michail Tatarinov at the beginning of 2005 in Korolev city (Moscow region). Sometimes the band calls itself the “Consort of suicidal-depressive-slacky-cynical metal”. On the opinion of the vocalist, Suicider plays “suicide metal”, but in general, it’s a heavy gothic metal with a little tendency to the melodic death from time to time. Our Kostya Aronberg had a chance to interview the band’s founder Michail Tatarinov, please join to the conversation…
1. Greetings Michail Tatarinov, welcome to metalshockfinland
Hi there!
2. Please tell our readers about THE SUICIDER, about its formation and rise.
This is a long story. Briefly, it began in 2005. That time I was playing the guitar in the not well-known Moscow band. Then we decided to make our own group to try our forces in creating our own music. The first band was tragically broken up and never became famous. Just in 2007 I finally found kindred souls, and The ‘Suicider’ was born then. Being a fan of Sentenced I haven’t thought long up about the name. It wasn’t long before we gave a first concert and it marked the beginning of the concert activity, recording demo tracks and so on. With the lapse of time we achieved some fame in Russian cities and several European countries. During this time the band has been keeping its entirety except of the bass guitarist. We’ve always had a trouble to find a right man for that instrument.
3. How would you call your music style?
It’s a quite difficult question. There is a mix of different things. Taking it all in all I suppose it is melodious and melancholic metal with a deal of black humor. What about a style I don’t want to pin a label on it. Let’s leave a work for critics. There are elements of hard rock and gothic metal and melodic death metal and even doom.
4. In 2009 you opened for Poisonblack and Amorphis, please share with us your experiences about these bands. What was WILLIE’s reaction (Vocalist of POISONBLACK ) when he found out that the name of your band comes from the name of one of his songs?
It was really difficult to understand his reaction. He looked very tired after the concert. And regular associations of his person with the Sentenced are apparently bored him. Before the concert I suggested him to belt out a song from the Sentenced but he refused and I understood him perfectly. Actually guys from Poisonblack are really positive and sociable especially Janne Markus. I remember we talked long enough about the music and guitars. Unfortunately they haven’t come to Russia any more. I wish to go to their concert with great pleasure. It’s quite another story with Amorphis. We were tired and exhausted enough what had an impact on our performance. So after the concert we spent a little time in the backstage and went home to hit the hay.
5. In 2010 the first album Death Surround came out. How was it taken in Moscow? Please tell us a little more about album’s recording.
A debut recording is always an important work and we approached to this matter very seriously. Everything went quite well until it came the mixing stage. Then we realized that we have run out of money. So we had to mix the album by another studio what was adversely affected on the sound. On a whole the Death Surround album is listenable but we as musicians are not satisfied with the result.
6. A wish to drink or to commit suicide prevails in your lyrics. Do you really believe that life is that awful that one has to drink every day and once it stops helping- to commit suicide?
Of course! lol, Once we live in Russia, ahah (I’m joking.) Actually you shouldn’t consider our lyrics so seriously. The suicide theme is being more to ridicule. Certainly I had difficult things in my life just like everybody does, but I have never intended and will never lay hands on myself. It is possible to find a way out of any difficult situation and it is not obligatory should be a window exit. As to the alcohol that’s true. We all like to drink 😉
7. Can you please tell us how the metal scene in Russia is going?
Frankly speaking quite lousily. It may be said that there is no common scene. All exists as an underground or closely to this. Of late years there is a little breakthrough but it is insignificant. The number of bands for example now known outside Russia can be counted by fingers. Moreover it cost them titanic efforts and these include also investment of own money. Many bands break up at the beginning of their career disappointed in their strength and meaning of being. It is easier for Moscow bands. As a rule they have fewer problems with concert organizations, releasing and other messing about.
It doesn’t go smoothly neather with label publishing. There is an opinion that it’s difficult to earn money on the heavy music, so there are not many people would release and promote such music. However, the situation has improved over the past 5 years, but not as much as we could wish.
Concerning the definite styles of music I cannot say anything. Every style has its own army of fans and an army of haters and also has common problems and common methods of dealing with that kind of problems (or absence of these methods.
8. What the band is currently working on?
At the moment, a new release is coming. It will be in a form of EP which will include 4 absolutely new songs. Its name is “Four Reasons To Die” and it could be easily downloaded online. We decided not to release it officially.
9. New EP? I’m fascinated, please tell me more about the process of recording.
In principle everything is already recorded, mixed and mastered. So won’t be long till the EP comes out. Concerning the recording and the sounds this time we’ve taken approach to the matter from quite another side. It’s difficult to explain but the new release is really different from the debut. Actually you’ll hear it by yourself soon.
10. Sounds great! And the last question: what would you like to say to our readers?
Stay metal and don’t listen to anybody.
11. Thanks a lot!
Thanks to you
