Tom Murphy at Westword.com recently caught up with ICED EARTH guitarist/founder Jon Schaffer. An excerpt from the interview is available below:
Q: Was there a receptive audience for the kind of music you were doing earlier in your career and what kind of local scene was there at that time?
Schaffer: “When I really first started playing out with Purgatory, which was my first band, there was a really good scene in the Tampa Bay area for more traditional metal. Then later in the ’80s, and certainly in the early ’90s when the death metal took over where the melodic metal scene kind of died around there. We started working internationally at that point. We came up in a very difficult time because of the grunge thing that took over and really became the trend in the early ’90s all the way through a large part of the ’90s.
It’s always been kind of an uphill battle for Iced Earth. I think if the first album had come out in 1980, we would have reached that IRON MAIDEN status, JUDAS PRIEST. I think we would have been right there with the big guys. But since we came up a decade later, we were fighting just to survive and never had the support machinery around us until many years later which is a record company firing on all cylinders, management, all of that. There are so many cogs in the machine that make a band successful. It’s been an uphill battle and we still face some of that today, but I have to say, things are moving better than they probably ever have. The chemistry in the band is better than it’s ever been. And that goes to say also for our crew and people behind the scene too and it’s really feeling great.”
Q: I have to think that Iron Maiden’s Number Of The Beast had a big impact on you as you were starting to play music more seriously. Why is that such an important record to you?
Schaffer: “I was really right around the time that I heard Number Of The Beast that I got my first guitar because I had begged my dad for years after seeing KISS in ’79. He finally realized I wasn’t going to give up on that and got me one. I got that album, and it blew my mind because I had never heard anything like that. I grew up with the old wave of British heavy metal, so we’re talking BLACK SABBATH and DEEP PURPLE. I wasn’t really into LED ZEPPELIN that much but I heard it because my older sister was into it. ALICE COOPER, BLUE OYSTER CULT, so it was more mid-tempo rock stuff.
Then Maiden comes out, and they have this wild rhythm section. The bass player, Steve Harris, just blew my mind. His compositions, the tempo changes, the guitar harmonies, the subject matter of the lyrical content. The whole thing was the ultimate package. It just felt like that was the direction for a vision of a band I had before I had a guitar. Once I heard those guys it was, ‘That’s the direction I want to go in.’ Not the old wave of British heavy metal. It’s more theatrical and I think that’s the big thing with Iced Earth. I’ve always tried to make the music kind of a rollercoaster ride of emotion for the listeners. If you have parts in songs that can take you down to the melancholy vibe of PINK FLOYD up to the raging thrashy stuff of SLAYER and everything in between, then you’re really taking your listeners on a journey.”
As previously reported, Iced Earth are currently on the road in North America in support of their new album, Dystopia. They recently checked in with the following update:
“Due to circumstances beyond our control, our March 3rd show at The House Of Blues in Lake Buena Vista, FL has been moved to a new venue. The show is now happening at The Beacham in Orlando, FL. Go to this location for venue information.
All original tickets remain valid. Please note earlier doors and stage times – details can be found on the venue website. Iced Earth is closing the show that night.
We understand if this upsets some fans. We are also not happy about this unfortunate change in plans.”

Iced Earth recently released their new video for ‘Anthem’, shot in Cologne, Germany during the European leg of the band’s world tour.
“We had a blast making that video,” said Schaffer. “I think the fans can see it on our faces. ‘Anthem’ captures the energy of our live shows, as well as the fun we’re having together as a band.”
Produced and directed by Kosch Fabian Film, ‘Anthem’ is the second music video released from Iced Earth’s 10th studio album, Dystopia. Check it out below:

After his debut in various rock music scenes of Emilia, in 1998, he joined Timoria, an Italian rock band that has marked an important page in the Italian rock of those years. A lot has happened since then… a few weeks ago I had a pleasure to interview Sasha, here’s what he told me …
Hello Sasha and welcome to Metalshock Finland! What have you been doing today?
– Hello Tarja and thanks for inviting me. Today I’ve done so many things, all important works despite the bad weather here today, but I’m always happy to do them.
On February 27th in Europe and February 28th in North America, EMI will release Immersion and Experience editions of Roger Waters’ opus, PINK FLOYD’s The Wall, as the final installment of the recent Why Pink Floyd? reissues and extended releases. The Wall remains Pink Floyd’s biggest-selling release after 1973’s legendary The Dark Side Of The Moon.
Pink Floyd have posted Behind The Wall Part 2 and 3 from the The Wall Immersion box set. Check it out all three below:
Released in November 1979, The Wall topped the album charts in the US, France, Germany, Sweden and Australia. ‘Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2’ – Pink Floyd’s first UK single since 1968 – became a #1 hit, selling more than one million copies within weeks of its release.
Between 1980 and 1981, Pink Floyd staged 31 performances of The Wall in the US, UK and Germany. It was a spectacular show that included a 40-foot wall, constructed, brick by brick, across the front of the stage during the performance. In 2010 and 2011 Roger Waters toured a new production of The Wall to huge international acclaim. He was joined onstage in May 2011 at London’s 02 Arena by guitarist, David Gilmour and drummer, Nick Mason. He continues to tour in the Southern Hemisphere and North America in 2012.
The Wall Immersion 7-disc edition includes a DVD featuring a film clip from the 1980 tour and a Behind The Wall documentary, plus, for the first time, CDs of excerpts from Roger Waters’ original demos and work-in-progress versions of songs on the final album. Additionally, among these previously unheard versions are David Gilmour’s original demos of ‘Comfortably Numb’ and ‘Run Like Hell’. The Immersion set also includes The Wall Live, compiled from the 1980-1981 original tour.
Both The Wall Immersion box set and Experience edition include a rare recording of ‘Another Brick In The Wall Part 1’. A highlight for fans, this demo showcases the evolution of the final track. Additionally, The Doctor explores the origins of the landmark track ‘Comfortably Numb’, giving further insight into Pink Floyd’s early demo recordings.
Following on from the Immersion and Experience editions of The Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here, these new versions of The Wall offer listeners a unique insight into another hugely successful chapter in the Pink Floyd story.
In 1978, after finishing Pink Floyd’s Animals stadium tour, Roger Waters devised the concept for the album The Wall. The album is a partly autobiographical story about a fictional rock star named Pink looking back at his early life and reflecting on the nature of fame and success.
Waters presented his band mates David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason with an extensive demo of songs. Pink Floyd recorded their eleventh album The Wall throughout 1979 in France, New York and Los Angeles, assisted by co-producer, Bob Ezrin and engineer, James Guthrie.
An adjunct to the sessions was the famous addition of a group of pupils from London’s Islington Green School, who recorded their backing vocals (“We don’t need no education…”) on ‘Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2’ at Pink Floyd’s own Britannia Row Studios in London. This became the world’s introduction to the album with the release of its first single, an instant success, accompanied by a promotional film which included several of the groundbreaking images from the story, including Gerald Scarfe’s brilliantly realized marching hammers.
Pink Floyd: The Wall Immersion box set, Experience edition and Collectors 180g 2LP Vinyl edition will be released February 28th through EMI. The 2CD remastered Discovery edition is out now.
February 25th marked the 20-year anniversary for Pantera’s Vulgar Display Of Power, a landmark album widely acknowledged as one of metal’s most enduring and influential masterworks. Recorded by singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul, the album has been certified double platinum by the RIAA and features several of the group’s most iconic songs including ‘Walk’, ‘Mouth For War’, ‘This Love’, and ‘Fucking Hostile’.
To celebrate, Rhino channels the album’s relentless blitzkrieg of musical aggression onto a two-disc Deluxe Edition. The CD includes the original album remastered and “Piss,” a recently discovered unreleased track from the recording sessions. The DVD contains an unreleased live performance filmed in Italy in September of 1992 plus the three official music videos from the album.
Due out May 15, 2012 from Rhino, the CD/DVD set will be available at retail outlets and will also be available digitally.
The collection features the debut of ‘Piss’, an incendiary blast of vintage Pantera from the original recording sessions. It remained lost until Vinnie Paul rediscovered the track while going through the band’s vault.
Along with the unreleased song, Vulgar Display Of Power (Deluxe Edition) also features unreleased video of the quartet performing six songs at the Monsters Of Rock show in Reggio Emilia, Italy on September 12, 1992. The set list draws almost exclusively from Vulgar (“This Love,” “Rise” “Mouth For War”), but also includes the title track from their previous album, Cowboys From Hell, and a melding of Vulgar’s “Hollow” and Cowboys’ “Domination,” which was a live staple of the band. Video of Pantera performing live during this era is extremely rare, making the DVD one of the few ways to see them in their prime.
