ATOM SMASH, a Rock Band in its true form is a fading thing. The genre has seen better years and there’s no denying it. Bodies pile up in dance clubs while rockers glam up their wardrobe for a piece of the dwindling record sales. Producers package ear candy so parents will do the purchasing, while kids do the ripping. The new Atom Smash is in every sense Rock ‘n’ Roll; “Beautiful Alien” is what they’re calling it. Some days ago MSFinland‘s Kostya had a chance to interview band’s vocalist Serg Sanchez about their new album, the music industry and the plans for the future…
1. Hello Serg Sanchez, welcome to Metal Shock Finland! Hola!
The group formed in 2006 by you and Paul Trust. How did you guys meet each other and where from you came the idea to form a band?
I was in a metal group that he was interested in producing. He convinced me to persue my own project with him. I had a lot respect for his sounds.
3. What music influenced the most on your style?
Soundgarden, Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains
4. Your new album “Beautiful Alien” is out now. What can you tell about its writing process?
Very natural and no holds bar. It was written and recorded in our garage aside from 3 sings that were done with Paul. The rest was self recorded within hours of the songwriting.
5. Do you think there are any differences between it and “Love Is In The Missile”?
Major differences in my ear. Different members and mentality. We didn’t write the record in a HIT song mind set. We wanted it to be colorful and Raw.
6. It sounds like you are very satisfied with the results 🙂 Do you think you can call this album PERFECT?
Yes we’re very pleased but perfect ain’t in our vocabulary. It’s our imperfections on this album that create depth.
7. Now when the new album is out, have Atom Smash any plans for 2012?
We plan on touring and growing.
8. What do you think about the music industry now. Is it better than before?
Well considering its the industry of selling a product one could steal it has certainly seen better days financially. I see the Rock industry as watered down and producer/radio driven as i’m sure it has always been but the artist being emulated aren’t my cup if tea. In dark ages colors have to shine a bit harder.
9. Do you think that all these projects of closing upload sites is helping the labels get up and that now people would buy albums and not download them?
Buying music is a testiment of your devotion to music. It makes you appreciate it more in my experiences. Especially physical copies. We started signing all our physical albums to drive home the experience.
10. Thanks for the interview Serg! Any last words you’d like to say to your fans and to our readers?
Thank you for the exposure. Don’t give up on the Rock side of metal. I’m not. 🙂
