CADAVERIA was formed in 2001 by Cadaveria and Marçelo Santos (aka Flegias, vocalist in Necrodeath) with the intent to create a virtual space where to freely express themselves as musicians and extreme artists. Since then, CADAVERIA private virtual space became part of the collective Metal universe. The band’s style is immediately labeled as Horror Metal, definition that means all and nothing and that therefore leaves them the chance to play from the classical Heavy Metal to the new progressive tendencies, passing through Death, Gothic and Black Metal. The lyrics, scheming, hermetic and introspective, mirror the dark soul and the vexed personality of the singer Cadaveria, talking about presages, existence, memory, energies, intellect and death… Some days ago Kostya Aronberg had a chance to interview band’s frontwoman Cadaveria Herself…
1. Hello and welcome to Metal Shock Finland! I’m Kostya. How are you? 🙂
Hi Kostya and all MSF readers! I’m fine, thanks.
2. Can I start with getting a backstory on the band?
CADAVERIA band was formed in 2001 by Marçelo Santos (Flegias) and me, with the intent to create a virtual space where to freely express ourselves as musicians and extreme artists. Since then we released four full length albums, the last one, entitled “Horror Metal” was released this January 31st. Since the departure of Baron Harkonnen, the keyboards man, in 2003, CADAVERIA has always been a four member combo. During the foreign live acts played in 2009, supporting our 3rd album In Your Blood, we tested an additional guitarist, in order to give more power to the live sound. The experience was positive and artistically productive, so finally Dick Laurent definitively entered the band and played an active part in the new tracks composition process.
3. What lyrical themes do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
Cinema, visual art and literature are great sources of inspiration for our music and lyrics, but it is above all my heart that tells me what to write and how to sing. So, the most part of CADAVERIA lyrics deal with my experiences, my thoughts and my considerations about existence and death. They are definitively very introspective, speaking about my dreams, nightmares, phobias, and about the energies I perceive in the places I live. By writing lyrics I save money I would spend at the headshrinker. Apart this there is not a special message for the listener. I don’t want to teach anything to anybody, but just to communicate what I feel.
4. What equipment do you guys use?
Well, personally I don’t exactly know the equipment the guys are using. My equipment is very simple: a microphone, a medium reverb and some make-up.
5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?
They are the bands we grown up with: Venom, Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Possessed, Death, Mercyful Fate. But musical preferences inside CADAVERIA band are variegated, someone listens to rock (from Led Zeppelin to Motorhead), someone to Thrash & Death, etc. Personally I cross many genres, from Black Metal to Progressive and Jazz. Probably these are the reasons why our style is so hard to describe, as it is contaminated by all these different genres.
6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?
I can’t remember my first show as a singer, but perfectly remember the first time I came on stage with CADAVERIA band. It was 2002, just after The Shadows’ Madame album release. We had prepared a great set for that event, we had a screen on a side of the stage, broadcasting the live images shot by a cameraman during the show. I had a flash light in my hands and with it I sometimes illuminated someone in the crowd. Now that you make me think about this, I think I must do it again.

7. Tell us about the band new single “Flowers in Fire”, why you choose this song to be your new single?
“Flowers in Fire” is the opening track, a very evocative song imbued with obscurity and horror mood. Its atmosphere and structure represents the spirit of this album. This is the second single coming from “Horror Metal”, the first, released on iTunes fifteen days before the album release date, is called “The Days of the After and Behind” and it is a more Black-Metal-oriented track.
8. How can you describe the bands new album, and why “Horror Metal”???
“Horror Metal” is the most obscure, sick, heavy and raw album ever produced by the group. Since the first album, fans and critics have always described our sound as “Horror Metal”. This time we got possession of this definition ‘cause we think it perfectly suits the album feeling. “Horror Metal” contains eleven new tracks, each one with its own identity. Each one could become a single and none is less interesting than the others. Finally it worth a listen.
9. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?
In Italy there is just a handful of Metal bands living with music. As the most part of the less lucky, we all have a job to survive in this fucking world. I’m a videomaker, so, when I’m not on stage or in the recording studios, you can see me shooting a video or editing it. At home I usually listen to music while I’m at the pc. All my free time is however dedicated to my music and to its promotion.
10. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?
Listeners can choose among many bands that play good Heavy Metal music. This is cool. There are also so many other bands that should stop making noise.
11. What can your fans expect to see from you in the future?
Many live shows in our area and, hopefully, abroad. We are going to release a video this Summer, so stay connected to CADAVERIA channels (http://www.cadaveria.com/, http://www.facebook.com/cadaveria) and don’t miss the news.
12. Thanks for the interview!!! Any last words for your fans?
CADAVERIA is back. “Horror Metal” is out now. A new era of horror and darkness has begun.
