Legendary Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen has set up an eBay store with some rare items and personal belongings to help raise funds for various charities. Among the items that are being auctioned are a Cartier gold-plated lighter and a Tiffany & Co. portable travel clock.
Acclaimed heavy metal singer Tim “Ripper” Owens (BEYOND FEAR, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH), who has been fronting Yngwie‘s band both live and in the studio since February 2008, was unable to join Malmsteen on July 7 at Getaway Rock Festival in Gävle, Sweden due to scheduling conflicts with Tim‘s official Ronnie James Dio tribute band DIO DISCIPLES. Handling most of the lead vocals during Yngwie‘s set at Getaway Rock was bassist Ralph Ciavolino.
According to ITV.com, the Savannah, Georgia-based quartet BARONESS was involved in a serious road accident while between shows on its U.K. tour.
At around 11:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, August 15) at the junction of Brassknocker Hill and the A36 in Bath, the band’s tour bus crashed and fell 30 feet over a viaduct.
Seven people were taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath, while two others — who were trapped and had to be rescued by firefighters — have been transported to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol. “Those people are now being treated by ambulance staff,” a fire service spokesman told BBC News.
A Great Western Ambulance Service spokesman said, “Our staff assessed all occupants and provided any required treatment before and while en route to hospital.”
Inspector Nick Hunt, from Avon and Somerset Police, added: “Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident. At this stage it is too early to tell what the cause was.”
A photo of the accident aftermath can be seen at this location.
The band played at The Fleece in Bristol last night. They were on their way to Southampton when the accident happened.
BARONESS released its new album, “Yellow & Green”, last month via Relapse Records.
The 2012 edition of The Sunflower Jam will take place on Sunday, September 16 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England. The evening, hosted by actor Jeremy Irons, will consist of many very special performances from confirmed artists such as Bruce Dickinson (IRON MAIDEN), Ian Paice (DEEP PURPLE), Mark King, Alfie Boe, Brian May (QUEEN) and Kerry Ellis and John Paul Jones (LED ZEPPELIN).
Jacky Paice, wife of Ian Paice, set up The Sunflower Jam charity in 2006 to help people treat cancer within the UCLH (University College London Hospitals). Now the charity raises acceptance of an integrated approach in medical treatment. By educating, supporting, informing and developing services around patient-centric care, and by bringing together doctors, health professionals, scientists and patients, alongside an array of musicians who not only perform but support the cause, the organizers aim to create a wider network of support and raise awareness through their event.
The charity will work by supporting initiatives set up to bridge the gap between integrated, functional and conventional medicine with a natural approach to wellness for children, young people, adults and their families with a range of acute and chronic emotional, mental and physical conditions.
Jacky Paice says, “As time has gone on, we have learnt so much about what can be done to help treat cancer in a natural way. I am honored to be hosting my sixth annual event this year. Personally, this is the most important year for raising awareness and funds as the percentage of people being diagnosed with cancer is rising.”
Adds Bruce Dickinson: “The Sunflower Jam is a great night out and a fabulous meeting of musical styles and personalities for a unique and very worthy cause.”
A British man who won £148 million (approximately $232 million) in Friday’s (August 10) EuroMillions lottery draw has said he wants to spend some of that money reuniting the original lineup of GUNS N’ ROSES.
Adrian Bayford, a 41-year-old music shop owner, told The Sun, “I think I would just have to get GUNS N’ ROSES together — the original lineup, mind. I’m a real fan.”
Former GUNS N’ ROSES guitarist Slash told CNN‘s Piers Morgan in May that no amount of money could ever get the original GUNS N’ ROSES to reunite. Slash explained, “I don’t think it’s a matter of that; it really isn’t. I think you’ve got a situation where nobody involved wants to revisit. It’s not just me — it’s the whole band. And so I don’t think there’s a price tag that anybody’s put in front of us that’s going to make that work.”
Asked about the kinds of offers the band has gotten to get back together for a tour, Slash replied, “I’ve heard a lot of numbers, but I’ve never been handed a specific offer. But I’d say it starts off with seven figures and then sometimes it starts to get even more grandiose than that.”
GUNS N’ ROSES was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in April, with Slash and several other original and later members of the group performing. Missing, however, was singer Axl Rose, who declined to attend.
Slash told The Pulse Of Radio that he knew from the start there was no chance of the original lineup performing again. “I never, in however many years it’s been, ever planned or thought that there was gonna be any reunion,” he said. “Everybody else has sort of alluded to it but, you know, I never saw it coming. I knew it was just an impossible thing, and it wasn’t something I really wanted.”
Slash also told Morgan he has not spoken with Axl since 1996, the year he left the band. As for the circumstances of his departure, Slash recalled, “It wasn’t even me necessarily leaving the band, it was not continuing on with the new band that Axl put together that he was now at the helm of, which was the new GUNS N’ ROSES. I was given a contract to basically join his new band, and it took about 24 hours before I decided, ‘I think this is the end of the line.'”
Musik Universe conducted an interview with singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, poet and political activist Serj Tankian (SYSTEM OF A DOWN) on August 11 at this year’s edition of the Heavy MTL festival at Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. You can now watch the chat below.
Tankian and his SYSTEM bandmates have made it clear in recent interviews that no plans have yet been made for the group to begin work on a new studio album. However, the singer says that he would be receptive to the idea of issuing a “best-of”-style collection with several previously unreleased songs from the SYSTEM archives.
“I think we have about four or five unreleased tracks that we finished before,” Serj said. “We need to talk about what to do with them, etc. But I would be very open to releasing, like, a greatest-hits record with a few [previously] unreleased tracks. However, we haven’t really discussed it, so I don’t wanna make a promise.”
Tankian is spending much of his time this year promoting his third solo album, “Harakiri”, which debuted at No. 29 on the Billboard album chart last month, selling 12,000 copies in its first week of release.
Asked if he misses writing music in a band-type situation while he is working on his solo material, Tankian said, “It’s an interesting dynamic, I think, writing by yourself and writing with people. When you have a very focused idea, a very concrete kind of understanding of what you wanna present and have the skills and the ability to completely present it the exact way that you want to, it’s much more conducive to do it yourself. If you have ideas that require other people’s input to kind of make it something else than what you have, then a collaboration — whether it’s with SYSTEM or anyone else for that matter — would be much smarter.”
SYSTEM OF A DOWN last released new music in 2005 on the “Mezmerize” and “Hypnotize” albums, going on hiatus the following year.
The band reunited in 2011 for touring purposes and launched a new run with DEFTONES on August 2 in Philadelphia.
Tankian told Loudwire that SYSTEM‘s recent tours have been a “blast,” adding, “I think we’ve played better because of it. There was new excitement in playing together and all of the shows have been really great. Everyone’s told us that we sound better than we did in 2006 when we left off, so I think it’s great.”
