An auction of guitars and memorabilia owned by the late Les Paul, known as the godfather of the electric guitar, has raised nearly $5 million for a foundation in his name benefiting music education and innovation.
Julien’s Auctions of Beverly Hills said Sunday (June 10th) that the two-day sale fetched record-setting prices for guitars. The items most coveted by rock musicians, museum curators and collectors included a 1951 Fender No-Caster, which sold for $216,000, a 1982 Gibson Les Paul that went for $180,000 and a 1940s Epiphone Zephyr that fetched $144,000.
Other Paul memorabilia included a recording console ($106,250), research notes ($28,125) and guitar schematics ($40,625).
Paul invented one of the world’s most widely played guitars, the Gibson Les Paul. The sale concluded Saturday (June 9th), on what would have been his 97th birthday. He died in 2009.
Baltimore, Maryland-based rock band CHARM CITY DEVILS (formerly known as FORTY ACRES and CHOSEN SON), has inked a worldwide deal with eOne Music. The band will release its second album, “Sins”, on July 31.
“We are so excited to be part of the eOne family! We can’t thank Dave Cash at Fat Lady Music for getting the ball rolling and bringing it to Scott Givens at eOne,” says CHARM CITY DEVILS frontman John Allen. “When you find people with a passion for music and are willing to give a commitment to rock music, you know you’re in the right place. The eOne staff has a fantastic reputation of developing new rock bands. Words can’t express how happy we are to find a home with such a great label!”
The first single from “Sins”, a cover of “Man Of Constant Sorrow” (from the Grammy-winning soundtrack of the George Clooney Oscar-nominated film “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”), is quickly making a name for itself on the rock radio airwaves. “Man Of Constant Sorrow” recently debuted on Billboard‘s Active Rock chart at No. 36. The official video for the song has just been released and can be seen below. The clip was shot in Baltimore and directed by CHARM CITY DEVILS bassist Anthony Arambula.
When CHARM CITY DEVILS (singerJohn Allen, guitarist Vic Karrera, bassist Anthony Arambula, guitarist Nick Kay and drummer Jason Heiser) started to put the new album together, they discussed covering a classic song and incorporating it into their live show. Singer John Allen states, “There were many ideas kicked around, but which one? ‘Man Of Constant Sorrow’ came up and we decided to give it a try. It’s an incredibly powerful song, but it was a challenge to develop and arrange it in a way that captured the essence of the song but would also rock! We all loved the version from ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’Skidd Mills and I built a foundation and with much tweaking and editing, and I think we delivered a great version of the song. The song transcends generations. It’s a timeless classic and it’s been around a long time. I’m excited to bring it to a whole new group of rock fans.”
Recorded at Sound Kitchen Studios in Nashville with Grammy-winning producer Skidd Mills (SAVING ABEL, EGYPT CENTRAL), “Sins” finds the Baltimore band adding harder, edgier tones to their blues-based roots. The result of the band’s life experiences over the past few years, “Sins” features an aggression and energy that hits you right between the eyes. From the first note of “Spite” to the last cymbal crash of “Unstoppable”, “Sins” showcases the band’s power, directness and new found energy and intensity.
Guitarist Nick Kay reflects on the “Sins” recording process, “Our previous record had been a compilation of songs written and recorded over a two to three year period. It was recorded in a couple of different settings and tracked by a few different people. This time, we went into one studio with one producer to give the record a cohesive sound and direction.”
“Everyone has ups and downs — that’s life,” proclaims singer John Allen. “I’ve been a professional musician since I could carry my gear and have seen and experienced what this industry ‘good and bad’ has to offer. We wanted ‘Sins’ to be deep with songs that people can relate to. On this record, I wanted to put it all out there with songs about love, anger, revenge, lust and all the emotions that I was feeling. Expressing what I, and everyone in this band, had been through. These feelings are universal. They touch everyone and we used our experiences to put together a powerful statement that we believe listeners can connect with.”
And what about the album title? “When it came to giving the record a title we wanted something that hit a nerve,” he continues. “We have five different personalities in this band and it can sometimes be a challenge to agree on one idea. The one thing we all could agree on is in one form or another we have all sinned. Some of us more than others.”

“The Curimus-condom works in two ways. It protects you from unwanted pregnancies and all the nasty germs, but also enhances your endurance. As you’re putting the condom into use, the grotesque male figures in the carton cut the most excitement off of you. No more worrying about premature eruption!”, explains Curimus drummer Jari Nieminen.
In the Curimus webstore and Inverse Store as long as the supplies last. For every product you purchase, you get a free condom.

CANNIBAL CORPSE‘s twelfth studio album, “Torture”, sold 9,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 38 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band’s previous CD, “Evisceration Plague”, also opened with 9,600 units to land at No. 66. That was more than 50 percent higher than the opening tally of CANNIBAL CORPSE‘s 2006 CD, “Kill”, which entered the chart at No. 170 after shifting more than 6,000 copies.
“Torture” was again produced by HATE ETERNAL‘s Erik Rutan at his own Mana Recording Studio in St. Petersburg, Florida as well as Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, and features the maniacal cover art by longtime CANNIBAL CORPSE artist Vincent Locke.
While “Torture” marks the latest progression in the band’s sound, it also witnesses a return to what drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz accurately terms “the frenzied attack of ‘Butchered At Birth’ (1991) or ‘Tomb Of The Mutilated’ (1992),” infusing the band’s advanced musicianship with the raw savagery that haunted their earlier releases, and in the process conceiving the definitive CANNIBAL CORPSE record.
It’s with great pleasure that Metal Blade announces the signing of Germany’s DOWNFALL OF GAIA! DOWNFALL OF GAIA eschews clichés and delivers a monolithic, yet melodic, wall of sound. The band formed in 2008 in Hannover, Germany and has released a demo cd, a split tape, a split LP, and a full length album. Their split with In The Hearts of Emperors can be found on bandcamp here: http://downfallofgaia.bandcamp.com/album/split-w-in-the-hearts-of-emperor
DOWNFALL OF GAIA started out as a crust band, but quickly developed further and have become much more difficult to compare to any other bands. Over the years, their songs became longer, slower, heavier; their influences range from doom to black metal, from down-tempo, to sludge, and hardcore. Their songs have and epic and majestic vibe, with enough musical peaks and valleys to keep listeners rooted firmly to the earth throughout 9:00+ minutes of music.
Since day one, the four-piece has been an active live band, not only performing Germany, but also throughout the world: Italy, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and the United States have been witness to their live performances. No matter if they are playing a tiny club or a big festival, DOWNFALL OF GAIA are well known for their intense live shows.
“Hailing from Germany, these folks really know how to push the limits of a song and drive it in all emotions and musical dynamics”! cvltnation.com
“Downfall of Gaia traverse more harrowing emotion than many bands do in their entire discographies. Both intensely atmospheric and relentlessly hard-hitting, the band takes hardcore fundamentals and pushes them to emotional extremes, flickering between fragility and ferocity”.Sputnikmusic.com
DOWNFALL OF GAIA comments on their deal with Metal Blade Records: “We feel quite honored to be a part of the Metal Blade family and to work with one of the most notable labels in the world! We are really excited about our Metal Blade debut and the future! A big thank you to all the people who supported us in any way during the last years, without you all of this wouldn’t be possible!”
DOWNFALL OF GAIA just finished the recording their next batch of music. The concept album, Suffocating In The Swarm Of Cranes, will be released later on in 2012. Stay tuned for more information, this is a release you do not want to miss!
