Dunlop and Slash have teamed up to create a triad of products due out just ahead of the guitar legend’s latest album release, “Apocalyptic Love“.
With Slash‘s own experimentation and input, Dunlop created two pedals to complement his raw, expressive sound: the MXR Slash Octave Fuzz and the Slash Cry Baby Classic. The Slash Octave Fuzz features a searing fuzz tone that can be combined with a separate sub octave voice and an octave up fuzz to thicken up your tone with a sinister growl. The Slash Cry Baby Classic is tuned to a lower frequency and features a custom-wound resonance inductor, giving this wah-wah a huge dynamic range and a wide sweep.
Finally, Dunlop celebrates the 25+ years Slash has used Tortex Picks with the limited-edition Slash Pick Tin, featuring the same white 1.14mm Tortex picks Slash takes to the studio and on the road, adorned with new album art and imagery. The Slash Pick Tin also includes a code to download a free digital copy of “Apocalyptic Love”‘s title track.
A question-and-answer session with Slash about his new Dunlop products:
Dunlop: What motivated the creation of the MXR Slash Octave Fuzz?
Slash: I needed a pedal that could produce a great sounding fuzz, with low octave and high octave effects to flesh it out.
Dunlop: Can you briefly describe the development process from your perspective?
Slash: Basically, I explained the sound I was looking for to the Dunlop design team, and we compared those ideas to similar pedals and effects. I told them what I liked and didn’t like, they put together some prototypes, and brought them to me in the studio. I was testing them while we were tracking the new record, so I had it right under the microscope. I gave the Dunlop guys my feedback, and they tweaked and fine-tuned some more until we got the sound I had in my head.
Dunlop: How do you use the Octave Fuzz?
Slash: When I step on the Octave Fuzz, I want to hear a searing, melodic buzz saw. And that’s what you get when you combine the fuzz with the sub octave voice and the high octave fuzz voice.
Dunlop: On which tracks from the new album can we hear the Slash Octave Fuzz?
Slash: I use the Octave/Fuzz pedal on “No More Heroes” and “Carolina”.
Dunlop: We also have a new Slash Cry Baby Classic and a Slash Pick Tin coming out. Why have you stuck with the Cry Baby and Tortex Picks all these years?
Slash: The Cry Baby is such a personal effect — every player has his own way of using it. I’m able to express myself in a certain way that makes every note that much more intense. As for Tortex — no other picks compare. They have a very subtle but very particular texture that you can’t get from any other pick. It’s not slippery plastic; there’s a grip to it.

Frankie DiVita, radio personality at Southern California’s 96.7 KCAL Rocks, conducted an interview with HELLYEAH/ex-PANTERA drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott on the red carpet of the fourth annual Revolver Golden Gods awards, which was held on April 11 at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles, California. You can now watch the chat below.
HELLYEAH‘s third album, “Band Of Brothers”, will be released on July 17 via the band’s new label home, Eleven Seven Music. The CD was recorded in Dallas, Texas at Vinnie Paul‘s home studio, VP’s Upstairs Studio, and was produced by the band and Jeremy Parker (GODSMACK, EVANESCENCE), who also served as engineer.
February 25 marked the 20-year anniversary for PANTERA‘s “Vulgar Display Of Power”, a landmark album widely acknowledged as one of metal’s most enduring and influential masterworks. Recorded by singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, the album has been certified double platinum by the RIAA and features several of the group’s most iconic songs including “Walk”, “Mouth For War”, “This Love” and “Fucking Hostile”.
To celebrate, Rhino channels the album’s relentless blitzkrieg of musical aggression onto a two-disc Deluxe Edition. The CD includes the original album remastered and “Piss”, a recently discovered unreleased track from the recording sessions. The DVD contains an unreleased live performance filmed in Italy in September of 1992 plus the three official music videos from the album.
Due out May 15 from Rhino, the CD/DVD set will be available at retail outlets, including Pantera.com and Rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $19.98. A version of the release will also be available digitally.
BLACKGATES — the new East San Francisco Bay Area/New York metal outfit featuring former ANTHRAXsingerDan Nelson, drummer Paul Bostaph (ex-TESTAMENT, EXODUS, SLAYER, FORBIDDEN) and guitarist Jeremy Epp (THE VENTING MACHINE) — made its live debut last night (Saturday, May 5) at Rooster’s Roadhouse in Alameda, California as part of the Cinco De Mayo Metal Throwdown with guests MUDFACE, FALLING TO PIECES and ANOTHER VOID. Video footage of the performance can be seen below.
BLACKGATES recently parted ways with bassist Uriah Duffy (ex-WHITESNAKE) and replaced him with Luis Barillas (THE VENTING MACHINE).
Commented Bostaph: “Luis is a veteran of the Bay Area metal scene and a welcome addition to the band.” Von Epp added, “[Barillas has] got that Steve Harris/Geezer Butler vibe on the bass which fits perfect with what were doing, not to mention that he’s a solid dude.” Nelson stated, “Luis is an amazing bassist and a perfect fit for the BLACKGATES sound. He’s a true bro who you know from day one will have your back in the trenches.”
BLACKGATES last year entered the studio to begin work on its debut album.
Bostaph previously stated about BLACKGATES‘s musical direction, “Our sound is drawn from all of our influences. Mostly, we don’t want to be a thrash metal band, although we draw from that genre as well. There is something in our music for everyone. Heavy grooves, good hooks and Dan‘s killer pipes. I think we have an independent sound that will stand on its own.” Nelson added, “It’s thrashy and heavy, so it will appeal to ANTHRAX and TESTAMENT fans. But has the groove and brutality of PANTERA, and is also very melodic. The guitarist is a kid from the Bay Area named Jeremy Epp, who’s an unknown, but sensational. People are gonna love him.”
BLACKGATES‘s first demo was recorded in the San Francisco Bay Area with producer Tim Narducci (SYSTEMATIC, SPIRALARMS).
BLACKGATES is:
* Dan Nelson (ANTHRAX): Vocals/guitar
* Paul Bostaph (TESTAMENT, SLAYER, FORBIDDEN, EXODUS): Drums
* Luis Barillas (THE VENTING MACHINE): Bass
* Jeremy Von Epp (THE VENTING MACHINE): Guitar/Vocals
Metal Scent are from Israel and were formed about 7 years ago. Their third album ‘Homemade’ was released in October 2011 and is their first album to include all original material.
They have progressed a lot with this album as their first one in 2005 consisted of Middle Eastern hit songs recomposed into metal versions. The second album consisted of American hit songs from the 1960’s rearranged into metal versions with Middle Eastern influences.
The band launch into the first track ‘Never Too Late’ with their melodic power metal style and Rami’s strong vocals are striking alongside the catchy riffs, which keep going at a fast pace throughout the song. It’s a great rock song and made me want to listen to more.
‘Hold On’ is one of the best tracks for me – the song delivers a very catchy hook and there is a great chugging riff throughout. The drumming provides a solid heavy beat and there is a great melodic guitar solo. Again the powerful vocals with a raw edge complete the song, making what I feel to be the most commercially viable song on the album.
‘Silks Of White’ is the fifth track of the album which starts with a nice heavy riff, then Rami’s rocking vocals kick in. The song has a Middle Eastern atmosphere in places which bring a nice different feel to it. Shahar’s solid thumping bass line is strong and there is some great double bass drumming from Ronen.
‘Riders Of The Night’ evokes a classic ’90’s power metal vibe for me, it’s a really catchy song to sing along to! Rami’s powerful metal vocals rage throughout this melodic song.
The last track of this fifteen song album is ‘Time Has Come’ which has a very familiar intro to it. It’s a very anthemic feel good ‘lighters in the air’ type song and one which a lot of people would do well to take note of the uplifting lyrics – ‘ Why can’t we all live together, live in peace and harmony’. There is some nice melodic acoustic guitar included and the song clearly demonstates the range of Rami’s vocal abilities. I really like this song with its happy and relaxed feel.
On the whole, ‘Homemade’ is a great melodic album with a lot of strengths and positive points and one I wouldn’t tire of listening to. I feel it is slightly long with 15 tracks and some songs are a little similar to each other, but having said that it is a very enjoyable album that rocks!
ALCHEM is a female fronted Italian progressive metal band. Lisa and Pierpaolo give life to a band called Acidaluna some years ago. Some sessions become part of the band(drummer, violin players)and they give more enphasis to a project that is surely a cradle of originality and research of new musical horizons. They decide to have ALCHEM as name and record a demo … I decided to do this “blind” interview” to leave space to the band and let the people know more about them. I hope all of you readers and the band likes my idea.
Hi guys! I’m Sylvi from Metal Shock Finland! It ‘a pleasure for me to do this interview and to talk with you, how are you?
Hi Sylvi! Thanks to you and to Metal Shock Finland. .we are well and inspired ,it’s a pleasure for us to talk with you
As I said, my interview will be made ??as if I did not know you at all, so let’s start from the beginning, from its origins. You exactly where you are? (I ask every member of the band)
We all are from Italy,Rome.
Alchem- Tarantola Maggio 2008
How and when did you start to have a passion for music? And especially when you realize to want to turn this passion into something bigger?
our passion for music began in childhood, we all started playing in bands very young. We have always gravitated around the Italian underground and it was natural to turn this passion into something more, with all the difficulties which the Italian bands , genre alternative, have , such as self-finance their project, little support from major media, line up changes
etc. must be a very big passion to survive
How did you meet? What were the initials “agreements”? I mean, what were you talking while the Alchem project grew little by little?
It’s a long history 😉 Piero and Lisa came from different experiences and have combined their creativity to form ALCHEM and are the founders.
They had different styles of music and ideas to want to melt, beyond a predetermined genre . did not want to be locked into a genre but to release what we feel through music, In fact, our songs do not follow a predetermined wire except amalgam of our different creativity. This is what we talk about even now with the other elements of the band, Paolo on bass, drummer Max, Susy on keyboards(recently entered into our band) we all have different backgrounds
Alchem, why did you choose this name? It can be connected to your music or your atmospheres?
because this mix of ideas is very much like what an alchemist makes looking for himself or the missing part of the truth. basically what we call reality is a continuous mix and change of elements apparently even dissonant
in metamorphosis. This may represent in some way our music.
Annalisa, how it feels to be the frontwoman of a band? What are your roles in the works?
well, I’m comfortable 🙂 I really wanted this project and I have the freedom to express my ideas, my melodies and lyrics. We have now an established way of composing, there is a lot of dialogue and cooperation between us. I do not consider the frontwoman of the band but an important part, of course fundamental, but the others also are. each one has its role.
Your primary influences?
This is the hardest question of all. everyone listens to music for years and we are definitely influenced by everything we have heard that it was in tune with us and from what we heard we pulled out ourselves with our strengths and weaknesses
Do you believe that “Dark Progressive Metal” is the term most appropriate for your music? Do you think that could change the course of time?
As we said is very difficult to label a band, I think people feel the need to do it especially with the bands not very well known for having an orientation. I believe that definition is too general and not applies to all our songs. We have many songs that are waiting to be well recorded that can be defined as progressive. Many people define us “Gothic” even if we admit to be slightly gothic inspired, for those who listen gothic defines us Metal, and Metal purists do not recognize us among their kind. The truth is that all these elements coexist in us because our backgrounds are all the bands that we loved and listened to over the years
Do you believe that the Italian music (Metal and not) is in crisis? If so, why?
music in general is in crisis, but not because there are not listeners, simply because it changed the businness and the majors being afraid of the new bands and continue to support bands already existing. The market for independent labels, despite their invaluable work they can’t within their means to invade the official market of new music releases. This is because the official Italian market absolutely not support alternative music and only provides to himself gains with Italian national pop music. So happens that scattered for Italy there are many really good music realities that does not get set, have trouble getting to know, and often people give up the music. They also have to finance themselves to produce excellent works, and this with the economic crisis is not always possible. Sometimes, underground bands are reviewed like the band signed to major label but it is a comparison not feasible. These have in fact a production that have a cost that an underground band obviously can not afford.

Why should people listen to Alchem? If you could choose, what would you like that people feel while listening to Alchem?
There isn’t a feeling that we want others to test, everyone should be free to try whatever he wants, we are all different and each has its own inner world, his tastes. What we enjoy is knowing that right now someone is listening to our music, trying his feelings and if he chose to listen to us we have been enjoyable for him
This is a personal question: Besides the Alchem, you carry out another job?
Yes ,we all take care of other things.. Piero and Paolo working on graphics and video , In fact, Piero (Capuano) has created the flyers and CD artwork (with photos taken by Claudia Ortu,) and Paolo(Tempesta) has made our first official video of “Whispering Clouds” from “Florilegium” which is not a official full length but a collection of demo tracks through time, from our beginnings to today. Lisa and Max are sometimes occasional teachers 😀
I know you have a very active activity live, how are your shows? How people respond? Where you did your last show?
We try to play in all situations, trying to communicate what we are, we like to stay in contact with people who came to see us and to entertain and talk with them even after the live. We learned a lot playing around , knowing many good bands that play with passion like us, every live is a valuable experience.
Last show was in Rome April 26 in a small club at the center of the capital
We are happy to see that the audience listens attentively to our proposal
One day the name Alchem will be accompanied with the names of bands such as ….?
I dare not even think … certainly we would love to open for bands most famous
and would be too many to list.
Who created your charming logo? There were specific agreements about how had to be done?
Thanks for the compliment! the logo was initially created as a tattoo (In fact it is the tattoo that have both Piero and Lisa it has to do with alchemy because it represents the duality of each element , and we decided to use it as a logo. was done by the guitarist Piero.
I found an interesting the choice to sing in both English and Italian, what you say about it? Which of the two languages you ??prefer for sing?
The beginning, I preferred the Italian language, for me it was more direct. Then the musicality of the English language and the desire to make myself understood by more people made me change my mind
English language can be considered the mother tongue of rock singing
while Italian is traditionally the language of “bel canto”. I have a classical approach so I mixed the two. But now I’m thinking to start to sing again in both languages, I noticed that the Italian audience appreciates it when I sing in Italian , naturally perceives it more directly. One day I’d sing a few words also in Spanish;)
Are you currently recording something? Or do you have plans for this year?
As we said before, we have in mind to record existing songs that were never recorded and new songs that come from the alchemical mixture of new elements that make up the band now, and something of acoustic.
If you have something to say that you have not said in this interview, this space is yours! You can talk openly to our readers by saying everything that people still do not know about Alchem!
thanks again to you and Metal Shock Finland for this opportunity. we take this opportunity to salute all those who support us and we hope soon to offer better quality new works. See you soon \m/
Reactivated Swedish death/thrash metallers THE CROWN played their first concert with returning vocalist Johan Lindstrand last night (Saturday, May 5) at Sticky Fingers in Gothenburg, Sweden. This marked the band’s first appearance in Gothenburg in 12 years and will likely be the group’s only show in Sweden this year.
Check out photos of last night’s performance at this location.
THE CROWN is currently writing material for a new studio album, tentatively due late 2012 via Century Media Records.
Commented Lindstrand: “We do have plenty of songs to fill a whole album.
“We have rehearsed on 5-6 songs now and they sound truly amazing. [They contain] a lot of variation, for sure, but with a pretty visible red line through it all.
“There’s still a couple of songs left to start messing with and a lot of lyrics to be written, but you can definitely begin to see an album getting formed and shaped into a real classic.
“There’s no date set for entering the studio but Marko [Tervonen, guitar] will handle the engineering and mixing and there’s no doubt that he will create a killer sound.
“We’re all very excited and we wanna start recording right now, but, as I’ve said before, there’s no room for mistakes. There’s only room for death fucking metal in the best possible way, so therefore we will not rush anything.”
THE CROWN‘s current lineup:
Johan Lindstrand – Vocals Magnus Olsfelt – Bass Marko Tervonen – Rhythm Guitar Janne Saarenpää – Drums Marcus Sunesson – Lead Guitar
THE CROWN‘s latest album, “Doomsday King”, came out in September 2010 via Century Media Records. The CD was the group’s first — and only — release to feature vocalist Jonas Stålhammar.
