Former NEVERMORE guitarist Jeff Loomis has teamed up with Guitar World magazine to share his shredding skills with fans. A guitar lesson for “The Ultimatum”, demonstrating how to play the lead guitar part of the song, can be seen below.
“The Ultimatum” comes off Loomis‘s second solo album, “Plains Of Oblivion”, which sold 2,900 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 179 on The Billboard 200 chart. The effort landed at No. 2 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
“Plains Of Oblivion” was released on April 10 in North America (one day earlier in Europe) via Century Media Records. The CD was produced by Aaron Smith (7 HORNS 7 EYES) and features cover artwork by Colin Marks of Rain Song Design, who has previously worked with ALL SHALL PERISH, THE END and XERATH.
Loomis and his solo band recently part in a 24-date, coast-to-coast U.S. tour with PROTEST THE HERO, PERIPHERY, THE SAFETY FIRE and TODAY I CAUGHT THE PLAGUE.
Jeff was accompanied on the stage by the following musicians:
Legendary guitarist Michael Schenker‘s “Temple Of Rock” European tour marks the first time Schenker‘s band features two fellow ex-SCORPIONS members — Herman Rarebell (drums) and Francis Buchholz (bass). Vocalist Doogie White (ex-RAINBOW and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN) and keyboardist Wayne Findlay complete the lineup.
The European concerts feature a plethora of hits spanning Michael Schenker‘s colorful career. Songs that are being performed by the “Temple Of Rock” lineup include UFO‘s “Rock Bottom” and “Doctor Doctor”, MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP‘s “Armed and Ready” and “Into The Arena”, SCORPIONS classics “Another Piece Of Meat” and “Rock You Like A Hurricane”, plus new songs from the recently released “Temple Of Rock” album “Miss Claustrophobia” and “Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead”.

A little background information on the genesis of this project: Åkerfeldt and Wilson have been friends since the late ’90s, when Wilson co-produced OPETH‘s revered “Blackwater Park” album. Over the years, they’d often spoken of working on a project together, but it wasn’t until recently that they managed to make something happen, when Mikael flew over to visit Steven in the U.K. and they ended up in Wilson‘s home studio throwing ideas around. That visit was the nascence of a whole self-titled album, written and produced by the pair, and mixed by Wilson.
The sound of STORM CORROSION can best be described as enchanting, orchestral, ambient, epic (half the album’s tracks clock in around the 10-minute mark) and nothing short of surprising to the new ear. However, the musicians’ respective fanbases will be primed to appreciate the new output, with Wilson‘s recent solo album, “Grace For Drowning”, and OPETH‘s “Heritage” having brought them to a logical place to understand STORM CORROSION. This eponymous collection is almost viewed as one side of a musical triangle.
Says Wilson, “If you’d asked me three months ago about the music, I would have said, ‘Expect the last thing you would expect.’ But actually, now that ‘Heritage’ and ‘Grace For Drowning’ have come out, I don’t think it’s going to be that much of a shock to people, because it’s almost like a third part of the trilogy, in a way. If anything, it’s even more orchestral, even more stripped down, even more dark, twisted and melancholic… but it certainly feels like it comes from the same place as ‘Heritage’ and ‘Grace For Drowning’, which indeed it does because it was written during the same period.”
“Some of the music on this record I think is the most beautiful music I have participated on ever,” adds Åkerfeldt. “There’s some magical sections on there. Musically, I think we’ve created something earthy, a bit frightening, exhausting, profound and rather intense. All at the same time. I can safely say I don’t know any other band or artist that sounds anything like STORM CORROSION. I guess that was also one of our goals, so to speak.”
The official release/listening party for the 20th-anniversary reissue of PANTERA‘s “Vulgar Display Of Power” will be held on Friday, May 11 at Duff’s Brooklyn in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
The address is:
Duff’s Brooklyn
168 Marcy Avenue (between S 5th & Broadway)
Williamsburg, New York
While combing the PANTERA vaults for the 20th-anniversary reissue of “Vulgar Display Of Power”, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott made an astounding discovery: “Piss”, an incendiary blast of vintage PANTERA from the original recording sessions that had long been forgotten. After 20 years, “Piss” finally made its debut on April 11 when the newly created video for the song premiered at the Revolver Golden Gods awards in Los Angeles, which was broadcast live on Xbox Live, as well as on the Xbox and Revolver Facebook pages. The song was then released to radio outlets and all digital music retailers. PANTERA is also the subject of a Revolver special issue, which hits newsstands everywhere on April 15.
For the “Piss” video, PANTERA, which can be seen below, put out a call through their Facebook page for fans to submit home videos of them rocking out to the band or attend a video shoot in Los Angeles. The resulting video is an amazing collection of fans of all ages, from around the world, moshing, jumping, punching, kicking, and just plain rocking out to PANTERA. The video, directed by Zach Merck, also features some amazing slow-motion shots that recreate the face punch from the iconic cover of “Vulgar Display Of Power”.
“‘Piss’ is the only unheard complete PANTERA track in existence, “said Vinnie. “It was recorded at the same time as ‘Vulgar Display Of Power’ and it’s 100 percent PANTERA with attitude and our signature groove! After mixing it, I can’t believe it didn’t make the record! So it’s 2012 and 20 years later and new PANTERA music has been delivered.”
In anticipation of the reissue of one of the greatest metal albums of all time, PANTERA‘s 1992 masterpiece “Vulgar Display Of Power”, Revolver magazine has created a PANTERA special issue, which includes the whole story of the band, an in-depth look at the making of “Vulgar”, fallen guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott‘s final interview, and more.
February 25 marked the 20-year anniversary for PANTERA‘s “Vulgar Display Of Power”, a landmark album widely acknowledged as one of metal’s most enduring and influential masterworks. Recorded by singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, the album has been certified double platinum by the RIAA and features several of the group’s most iconic songs including “Walk”, “Mouth For War”, “This Love” and “Fucking Hostile”.
To celebrate, Rhino channels the album’s relentless blitzkrieg of musical aggression onto a two-disc Deluxe Edition. The CD includes the original album remastered and “Piss”, a recently discovered unreleased track from the recording sessions. The DVD contains an unreleased live performance filmed in Italy in September of 1992 plus the three official music videos from the album.
Due out May 15, 2012 from Rhino, the CD/DVD set will be available at retail outlets, including Pantera.com and Rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $19.98. A version of the release will also be available digitally.
Along with the unreleased song, “Vulgar Display Of Power (Deluxe Edition)” also features unreleased video of the quartet performing six songs at the Monsters Of Rock show in Reggio Emilia, Italy on September 12, 1992. The set list draws almost exclusively from “Vulgar” (“This Love”, “Rise”, “Mouth For War”), but also includes the title track from their previous album, “Cowboys From Hell”, and a melding of “Vulgar”‘s “Hollow” and “Cowboys”‘ “Domination”, which was a live staple of the band. Video of PANTERA performing live during this era is extremely rare, making the DVD one of the few ways to see them in their prime.

Dimebag Darrell was co-founder and lead guitarist for PANTERA. When PANTERA broke up in 2003, Dimebag and his brother Vinnie Paul formed DAMAGEPLAN. On Dec. 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag was shot and killed onstage by Nathan Gale. He was 38 years old.
DEEP PURPLE‘s Ian Gillan and BLACK SABBATH‘s Tony Iommi took everybody by surprise in 2011 by releasing a charity single, “Out Of My Mind”, renewing the collaboration that led the pair to record an album in 1984, “Born Again”, under the BLACK SABBATH moniker. For the occasion, the two rock legends called a few friends and were soon joined by Jason Newsted (METALLICA, VOIVOD, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM), Jon Lord (DEEP PURPLE) and Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN).
The single was a joyful and inspired moment. The spark to bring Iommi and Gillan in a studio, together again was to finance the rebuilding of a music school in Armenia they had visited together on various occasions in past years.
Far from being a spectacular charity project, WHOCARES was a nice gesture, done with class, from two musicians with nothing to prove, willing to support music, where music is considered a luxury.
“As I said once in the song ‘Razzle Dazzle’ (DEEP PURPLE‘s ‘Bananas’ album), ‘It’s a real fine line between an orgy of destruction and a wonderful time,'” Gillan tells PanArmenian.net about the forthcoming CD. “The destruction of conformity in this case: Some of these pieces never really fitted into their contemporary program and got side-lined or forgotten, and some of the album tracks never had much exposure. As the track listing for this album came together, I noticed many of the titles had character similarities; a combination of freshness as they finally felt the sun on their backs and rebellion in a ‘yeah told you so’ kind of way. And that adds up to a wonderful time. And that adds up to more money for the music school we are building in Armenia.”
“And what about WHOCARES… this ad-hoc benefit band put together by Tony Iommi and myself on a flight home from Yerevan, where we’d been deeply humbled by the honors and expectations bestowed upon us. Well that’s it really, in a nutshell, so to speak, what more can I say; it’s all there in the music.”
Among the tracks set to appear on the upcoming album are the two original WHOCARES songs; DEEP PURPLE‘s unreleased studio jam “Dick Pimple”; a song from REPO DEPO (a band Ian Gillan formed before the DEEP PURPLE reunion which never released any material); two previously unreleased songs from Tony Iommi featuring Glenn Hughes; obscure collaborations, B-sides lost on seven-inch vinyl; and exclusive live versions recorded live on radio.
“WhoCares” will be released on June 22 via earMUSIC.
