Interview With MICHAEL SCHENKER: Winner Of ‘Icon’ Golden God Award; “It’s the icing on the cake”

During the busy evening in the media area at the Metal Hammer Golden God Awards this last Monday 16th June, I had no idea that I would be coming face to face with the guitar legend that is Michael Schenker.

All of a sudden Michael appeared on the red carpet proudly clutching his award, (given to him by AEROSMITH‘s Joe Perry) to have photos taken. Michael had quite deservedly won the ‘Icon’ award, honouring his talent and work in the rock and metal world throughout the years; his early days spent in the now legendary SCORPIONS, following on to achieve stardom with with UFO in the seventies. Michael then went on to have a solo career, forming the MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP in 1979, which went on to have various incarnations, plus taking part in many other projects. In the last few years, Michael has achieved more success with his TEMPLE OF ROCK band.

As Michael walked over, I quickly caught his attention for a chat. Michael was a complete gentleman saying hello and shaking my hand, though on the recording I forgot to actually announce who was standing in front of me! But Michael was very humble about his award, expressing:

“I never expected anything like that, so after all these years to end up with something like this is just fantastic.”
