STRYPER – Live At The Whisky – CD/DVD. This well-recorded live CD/DVD combo sees Stryper back on their old stomping ground, LA’s Sunset Strip, at a sold out show at the legendary Whisky A Go Go. In an intimate live setting like this, there’s nowhere for a band to hide; they’ll either stand or fall on the strength of their songs and performance. In Stryper’s case, this in-your-face environment shows them at their best, ramming home an energetic 16 song set. The classics are all present and correct, as are new songs from the band’s latest studio album “No More Hell To Pay”, which many fans lauded as being every bit as good as 80s high water mark “To Hell With The Devil”, and the four new tracks given an airing are capable of rubbing shoulders comfortably with established fan faves like “Soldiers Under Command” and “Free”. All their 80s albums are represented, the band nailing the vocal harmonies enthusiastically, and more polished singles like “Calling On You” “Always There For You” gain a grittier edge here, without losing any of their melodic appeal. They also tear through a lost gem in the shape of “All For One”, from “Against The Law”.
It’s also a pleasure to watch the underrated Sweet / Fox guitar tag team in action, trading solos and harmonizing not only on lead lines, but also on riffs. If you’re a fan, you can’t go wrong with this package, and it’s powerful evidence that Stryper are maturing like a fine wine, and have as much to offer now as they did back in the 80s.
