Young fellows forming groups and getting songs on the radio isn’t anything new. From my viewpoint, a lot of that, up to now, has unfortunately been dime-a-dozen, manufactured, mindless pop drivel aimed at young impressionable girls in an effort to cash in quick on the boys’ cuteness and appeal before the whole awkward adolescence thing kicks in, and then it’s on to the next project. On and on it goes, and has for decades.
But MYSTERY is not your pre-teen daughter’s limited choice pop boy band. Go ahead and nix any preconceived comparisons to the aforementioned, because that stereotype has been blown away via Marshall stacks cranked up to 10+.
From Melbourne, Australia (home of AC/DC, no less) these guys formed in early 2010 at the tender ages of 12 and 13. With determination, moxie, and heads full of dreams without limitations, they wasted no time getting out there to play what they liked: straight-ahead, in your face, glorious Rock & Roll the way my generation remembers the era of the Sunset Strip and bands like Poison, Faster Pussycat, Bang Tango, and Motley Crue.
The youngest rock band ever to tour the world over, MYSTERY has already shared the stage with the likes of Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister, Guns n’ Roses, and Motörhead—to name but a few. They’ve got a strong, loyal fan base of all ages that continues to be wowed by their young and genuine talent and their fresh, positive, just-rebellious-enough vibe.
“From Dusk Till Dawn”, the band’s second album and again produced by Stu Marshall (Death Dealer, Empires Of Eden) contains 13 rocking tunes, plus a bonus track for the Japanese version. Each member is impressively talented in his own right; collectively, the band is tight and unified. Songs like the title track, along with ‘Let It Out’, ‘Fight For You’, and ‘Die Another Day’ are good representations of their overall sound and style. The band round out the album with covers of Judas Priest’s ‘I’m A Rocker’ and The Choir Boys’ ‘Run To Paradise’, played and sung with conviction and a style all theirs.
Keeping in mind the boys are still very young, their songwriting does reflect it to an extent. But most of their lyrical content is very positive, rousing their peers with themes along the lines of “Be yourself” and “Stand up for what you believe in!” A few ballads are in here too, but there isn’t any subject matter that goes too deep or too far over to the dark side. They have plenty of time for that. If these guys have their gig together this well now, though, it will be very interesting to follow them on the journey as they live and mature and go on to write about their experiences along the way.
Those who aim to rock a little harder and have fun doing it will enjoy “From Dusk Till Dawn”. And well, should your daughters take a liking too, MYSTERY is a band even hard-rocking mamas can approve of.
