The most significant alternative music festival in the Baltic region, DEVILSTONE (Lithuania), presents one of the main acts in this event: the progressive Swedes KATATONIA. Founded in 1991, KATATONIA is one of the most essential and successful bands in the whole Scandinavian Peninsula. Their openness and progressive melancholy had earned the band this kind of popularity.
KATATONIA’s name often figures among MY DYING BRIDE, PARADISE LOST, and ANATHEMA (who have already performed at DEVILSTONE!); however, the Swedes have surpassed their British comrades in conveying the beauty of gloom and negative emotions. KATATONIA’s early releases are defined as black/doom, a genre which has not been used to describe any other band up until the 90’s, and the band’s first album, Dance of December Souls, is named as this genre’s classic. As appropriate for true veterans, KATATONIA is far ahead from other melancholic music acts.
