Ahmad Zaghal is a 31 years old blind American fan of Rock music who knows no limits. He has broken the chains indeed. BBC and Washington Post have recently reported about Ahmad and his work taking pictures at music concerts, which has gained him a following on photo-sharing service Instagram.
Together with Sean Gray, who was born with cerebral palsy and is the lead singer in the band Birth (Defects), Ahmad also hosts a weekly radio programme.
“This is what happens when someone who can’t see a thing decides to shoot concert pics,” Ahmad’s written on his profile page. “Captions only indicate what I think I’m shooting.”
“It’s a totally funny idea,” Zaghal, said to Washington Post‘s Chris Richards. “And now people are taking it more seriously. And that’s great. Maybe there is a point to this!” He attends roughly 20 concerts a month, always arriving in time to snag a spot up front. Once the band gets started, he hoists his iPhone to his ear and listens. Screen-reading software tells him when he’s selected the camera function. Then, he points and shoots. If there’s nobody to chat with between sets, he’ll caption the images and post them to Instagram straight from the gig. “I don’t get asked about [being blind] as much as you’d expect,” Zaghal says. “Maybe that’s what keeps me coming to these shows, subconsciously. . . . I never thought about it.”
“I think there was a bit of trepidation to venture out,” says Ahmad, who has been blind since birth. “And I thought to myself, ‘Why do that?’ I’m just as capable of getting out and going to a show like anybody else. If you want to do something, go ahead and do it.”
We at Metal Shock Finland would like to humbly send our respect and regard to Ahmad Zaghal, a true fan of rock music and wishing him success in his career as a photographer!
