Metal Shock Finland’s David Pearce caught up with KATALEPTIC at Bloodstock Open Air 2012. Kataleptic got to Bloodstock by winning Metal To The Masses. Here they are talking about their new Ep, what it meant to win Metal To The Masses and what it was like to play Bloodstock Open Air.
Kataleptic formed in ’08 in Birmingham, England with the aim of making pure, brutal, Death Metal. The band quickly formed a following in the Midlands playing the local pubs and clubs as well as recording and releasing two demos between ’09 and ’10. The band was also featured in Terrorizer Magazine’s Grindhouse compilation. Now in their fourth year, Kataleptic are wrapping up the recording of their new EP “Through The Eyes of Carnality” which promises to be more savage than anything previously released by the band.
Metal Shock Finland’s David Pearce caught up with Tim Neale from PYTHIA at Bloodstock Open Air 2012. He took a time out to give us the interview about how the tour went with Mortad earlier this year, their new album The Serpent’s Curse and playing Bloodstock for the second time he is what he had to say. Check out the audio interview below.
PYTHIA (pronounced pie-thee-ya) are a group of classical and metal inspired musicians who believe that the art of music is a hallowed path, only to be undertaken by the strong willed and the dedicated. Fronted by Emily Alice Ovenden, a published novelist and member of the number one selling act ‘Mediaeval Baebes’, PYTHIA were formed at the end of 2009 and brought together by a love of fantasy and gothic imagery and literature, the darker, more enigmatic classical works, and, of course; heavy metal.

Humangled is a death metal band from Pisa (Italy) born from the cyber-grind duo of Putrid Sequence (“Inside Reeking Organs“, 1994). After having released “Anatomic Butchery” (1996) demo tape, which received very good reviews from the beginning on magazines, the band disbanded for personal reasons and remained inactive until December, 2006, when the duo Goreds / Scurb reassembled. In 2010 Humangled signed with Abyss Records from Indianapolis (USA) to release their debut album “Fractal” on 31st May. Production/Mixing/Mastering was made by Dan Swano @ Unisound Studios (SWE), for the new EP titled “Odd Ethics” released May 2012.
The Ep starts off with Intro Needles Of The Blind the song starts off with what sounds like doctors talking about a patient in a hospital then all of a sudden it powers into a heavy guitar riff full of energy then the vocals come in gruff and harsh but the guitar work is very good some really heavy riffs throughout the song. The vocals are very gruff and harsh but they go well with the guitars, the drums pounding out the rhythm behind keeps the tempo perfectly. The song gets my head nodding from the first bars of the guitars and kept it going throughout good start to the Ep. The second song is Skinned, To Feel All starts off with another powerful guitar riff, and the vocals are dark and harsh but are well really well done. The outstanding point is the guitar work it is outstanding they are playing at such speed but hitting every note perfectly and the drums keeping up the same tempo is a real eye opener. But it is another good hard heavy song and sung perfectly. The third song on the Ep is Smells Acrid again it starts with another powerful but twin guitar assault which I love hearing it give a song a real edge hearing that type of guitar work. The vocals are again harsh but very well executed and the pounding of the drums again keeping the tempo right where it should be high intensity. So far the Ep has been of the highest order the last song on the Ep is Deny Your Creed which starts off with the drums and the guitars together then the guitars take over with a cracking riff bit later the vocals come in harsh but perfectly done. The guitar work on this song has been full of high intensity with no time to catch your breath as it steams through the riffs at break neck speed. The vocals again have been really well executed with no let-up in determination to make your ears bleed with pleasure. This is a really good song to end the Ep on.
Overall
Overall this Ep has been a full on assault to my ear drums full of break neck speed guitar riffs, harsh vocals that would make you stand up and listen and finally the high intensity pounding drums which kept the tempo of the song to perfection. This Ep got my head nodding from the first bars of the first song to the ending of the last song normally I don’t listen to this type of Metal but I really enjoyed this Ep and I am looking forward to hearing a lot more from these guys in the future.

As Silence Breaks are a thrash/melodic death metal/heavy metal band of five, hailing from Sydney, Australia. The Architecture of Truth is the band’s third release; their first being ‘The Inferno (E.P.) in 2009, followed by their self titled album ‘As Silence Breaks’, released in 2011 after signing to New Justice Records about 18 months ago.
The band have excellent metal credentials, having toured around Australia for the past 6 years, sharing stages with the likes of Sybreed, TesseracT, periphery, Darkest Hour and For The Fallen Dreams. Also worthy of a mention is the fact they played on the ‘Taste of Chaos’ tour in Sydney for two consecutive years.
The Architecture of Truth is an amalgamation of the three previously mentioned genres of metal they have become so accustomed and proficient at playing, garnering themselves a loyal fan base along the way. Their sound is pretty much a pure, solid heavy metal base, plus thrash and melodic death metal thrown into the mix. It should be said however, that on this, their third offering, everything just seems that touch more polished and together.
The first track ‘Litany of Fear’ begins softly with a solo guitar playing, and if you knew nothing whatsoever about the band it may well come as a total shocker when it suddenly kicks up a notch (or several!) and the growling vocals of Sam Rilatt begin.
Into track 2, which is ‘Decimate’, and this track also continues the assault on the aural senses; grabbing the listeners attention with some cracking guitar riffs and blistering drumming from Reece Kirby. Track 3, ‘Freedom’, is a bit of a surprise, as alongside the excellent growling vocals of Rilatt there are some clear and surprisingly good backing vocals. Alas I am unsure which of the other band members is actually providing these.
Next is ‘Biomechanical’, again a track with a softer sound, yet still with a thrashy guitar intro, and again containing more ‘clean vocals’, which work well yet again. Track 5 Instrument of ‘Vengeance’ is next to assail the senses; definitely one of the heavier tracks on the album. Followed by track 6, Purpose in which the thrash influences literally scream themselves out at the listener.
Altogether there are 12 tracks on The Architecture of Truth, and although it does get a touch ‘samey’ towards the middle surely that is the whole point; the listener is getting exactly what they wanted and paid for!
That said, Track 8, The Warning has some, in my humble opinion some bona fide Grade A blistering drums, the tempo being simply awesome! ‘Fire Borne Chaos’ is next, followed by ‘Purgatory’, and then the heavy tones of ‘Discord‘, with its heavy bass tones and yet again frenzied drumming. The final track on the album is ‘Redeemer‘, an all-together more up-tempo number and very likely my favourite track on the entire album.
In summary: Sam Rilatt is an excellent ’growling’ vocalist/front man, but as previously mentioned, there are also some very good clean vocals too – and where these have been slotted in they work exceedingly well. The Frenzied drumming of Kirby and the crushing guitar riffs of Ben Irwin & Dan O’Brien all go towards making this an album that once it has finished I found I had to press play once more!
As Silence Breaks are:
