RICKY WARWICK‘s new double album, “When Patsy Cline Was Crazy (And Guy Mitchell Sang The Blues)” and “Hearts On Trees”, was released in February of this year. Today, RICKY returns with the official video for ‘Schwaben Redoubt’ premiering exclusively with War History Online.
RICKY comments: “This is a song about a friendship found between two teenage lads from Ireland in a trench in Northern France on the morning of the 1st July 1916… a hundred years ago this year. One from the North one from the South who would on any other day hate each other’s guts but today all they have is each other, a shared fear of death and a shared name… ‘Schwaben Redoubt’ was the name of the German position they walked towards that morning… and into death.”
Sam Robinson, who wrote the lyrics to the song adds: “It isn’t lost on RICKY nor I that as the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme approaches once again thousands of Irishmen, Northern and Southern have returned to France this month, their purpose goodwill, laughter and bon homie. Times like these only exist through the sacrifice made by men like Liam Kelly and Billy Drennan who fell side by side on the ‘Schwaben Redoubt’ on the morning of the 1st July 1916. Regardless of our differences, sometimes there is a greater evil with which to do battle. ‘Schwaben Redoubt’ was simply written song with a deeper message and meaning. To have the front men of two of Ireland’s greatest bands STIFF LITTLE FINGERS and THIN LIZZY step up to the mic and tell the tale is for me simply mind-blowing.”
With guest vocals by Jake Burns (STIFF LITTLE FINGERS) the song, as the 100th anniversary of the battle approaches, is a tribute to the young men of Ireland North and South, Catholic and Protestant who gave their lives in what was to ironically to be labelled the war to end all wars. The video’s inclusion of war-time images only adds to the poignancy of this fateful point in history during the summer of 1916 in Northern France.

Nuclear Blast Entertainment announced the signing of Swedish progressive legends, OPETH. Always an unstoppable force for uniqueness amid a sea of generic swill, OPETH have been setting the rulebook ablaze, and ploughing a uniquely progressive and exploratory furrow for over 25 years now. Neither conforming nor exhibiting any desire to be restricted to a single genre, OPETH, quite simply, have a time honored tradition of blowing our minds with both class and forward thinking. All these years later, nothing and everything has changed once again with their forthcoming album “Sorceress”.
“We’re happy to confirm that we have indeed signed a deal with Nuclear Blast Entertainment and will be putting out our 12th studio album »Sorceress« via our own imprint, Moderbolaget Records,” states Mikael Åkerfeldt. “The decision was made in Markus Staiger’s (Nuclear Blast kingpin) ridiculously potent Porsche going at 150 mph somewhere in the south of Germany. We’re happy to be part of the NB team and look forward to a fruitful relationship.”
Nuclear Blast owner, Markus Staiger, continues: “I am honored that OPETH have joined the Nuclear Blast family. Mikael Åkerfeldt and his fellow bandmates have demonstrated time and time again that OPETH are a band that never release an album that sounds the same. You never know what their new music will sound like! Nuclear Blast has been following the musical journey of OPETH from the beginning with »Orchid« to landmark albums like »Still Life«, »Deliverance«, »Damnation« and »Blackwater Park«, right up to 2014’s »Pale Communion«! The band have become one of the most challenging artists in rock music today. It is not often that we get to work with musicians of their caliber and I’m thrilled to have such a unique genre-leader on the label. The future for OPETH and Nuclear Blast looks very bright.”
Monte Conner, Nuclear Blast Entertainment president adds: “OPETH are a band that have continually evolved and moved forward at every stage. Always innovating and always continuing to challenge themselves as players and writers. They are simply fearless. I can’t wait to hear what they come up with next! It’s an amazing feeling to be reunited with one of my favorite bands and I look forward to my colleagues here at Nuclear Blast being able to have their own OPETH experience and role in the band’s continuing journey. I want to thank Mikael Åkerfeldt and OPETH for putting their faith and trust in everyone here at Nuclear Blast.”
OPETH are currently in the studio with Tom Dalgety putting the finishing touches on “Sorceress”. A release for the album is tentatively scheduled for the fall via Moderbolaget Records / Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

Iconic UK metallers, PARADISE LOST, have signed a worldwide deal with German-based metal powerhouse Nuclear Blast! Formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1988 and still boasting 4 of its 5 original members, the band are widely-credited with co-founding the gothic metal genre with their sophomore album, “Gothic” (1991). Through the years, PARADISE LOST have changed their style effectively and reinvented themselves again and again. They elbowed their way from their original melodic death metal on their debut, “Lost Paradise” (1990) to the classic “Icon” (1993) and more experimental “One Second” (1997). Finally they went back to the roots with their current release, “The Plague Within” (2015) and some of the best reviews of their career.
Vocalist Nick Holmes commented: “PARADISE LOST’s career has run alongside Nuclear Blast Records since the label began in the late 80’s. And as huge fans of original death metal, we still have the majority of the label’s first releases from those very early days. It’s pretty incredible to see how the label has become a real force in metal music over the years, both in Europe and America and now, nearly 30 years later, in a new chapter for the band, it’s exciting for PARADISE LOST to be a part of Nuclear Blast in 2017!”
Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger adds: “As a fan from day one I’ve been following PARADISE LOST ever since their death metal era but also enjoyed watching them grow into something even bigger and so unique. They defined and later on re-defined the gothic genre and always delivered the most dark and memorable songs. It’s with great pleasure to finally welcome the band to the ever-growing Nuclear Blast family! Needless to say that we’re very much looking forward to this cooperation!”

Album artwork or the front cover of an album is more than a piece of paper. It is like an ID card for the album, EP or single, giving information about the album and artist. It is also like a promotional billboard in record shops or on the internet, advertising the theme and genre of music, what was in the head of the artist during the making of this album …etc. However, the quality of the music of an album is the most important thing, but I believe the artwork is important too, as it is the first thing that everybody will see about the album even before its release. Every artist or band has this chance to encourage their fans or others to buy and listen to their albums or throw water on the flames inside the fans and make them disappointed before even listening to the music. That is why today, the artists and record labels are taking more care about the album front cover and are hiring professional artists to create the best art for their records.
I had a chance to have an interview with one of those professional artists to talk about one of his masterpieces and his memories. Ken Kelly, who has created many cover artworks for bands such as Kiss and Manowar and also for some movies. He is also responsible for creating an epic front cover for one of the best albums in rock music, Rainbow “Rising”, with his magical fingers and mind.
The creation of the Rainbow “Rising” artwork is definitely a milestone in Ken’s career. A masterpiece which still looks alive, beautiful and epic after 40 years and the dust of time was not able to reduce its value! So we went through the history and into the past and talked about those days.
Mr Kelly expressed:
“I have to preface it with what happened before I came to Rainbow. Rainbow itself was a very simple cover to do but I don’t want to misrepresent that. It was a difficult cover, it was a unique cover, but I have to give Ritchie Blackmore the credit for it. He knew exactly what he wanted.
So, when I came into his office and after we greeted each other and sat down and started talking about the cover, I believe it comes from one of the songs – the actual reaching of the hand out to the rainbow. I had just been completely overwhelmed with KISS and what I did for them, so I was very prepared when Rainbow called and then I went into their office and they dictated the cover.
So I left the office with a complete painting in my head, I simply had to go home and use the disciplines that we’re taught as artists and do what Ritchie said and that’s what I did.
I didn’t think about it much at the time, but it’s stayed alive for forty years, it’s amazing, it’s incredible and it was a masterpiece because that’s what Ritchie asked for. He still knows what he’s doing to this day and he did back then. I would love to say I created everything and it’s all mine, but that’s simply not true.” (laughs)
I was curious to know what the reaction was from the Rainbow members, record label and fans, so I asked a question about it. Ken answered me:
“I did not hear from the group or the label, it was a very smooth and simple transaction.
The fans, for the forty years now have been all over me – just how incredible this album was, the music in it is incredible and they all love the cover naturally, because it plays a role in the fantasy element of the album. It’s just been a positive experience for me.”
* He also revealed two little secrets about this artwork, if you are interested to know about them, you should listen to the whole of this interview and see if you will be surprised or not!
What is Ken Kelly doing these days? He stated:
“I just finished Manowar’s latest album, they are on tour or just finished the tour and Joey needed it very quickly and I’m currently working steady on heavy metal albums. I’m constantly doing all kinds of things, still a very active artist.“

PAIN, the Swedish metal force led by multi-instrumentalist and producer Peter Tägtgren (HYPOCRISY, LINDEMANN), are ready to unleash the follow-up to 2011’s “You Only Live Twice”. After the substantial success of Peter‘s LINDEMANN project with RAMMSTEIN vocalist Till Lindemann, he retreated and took time to write another industrial metal statement entitled “Coming Home”. The release of this record is scheduled for September 9th through Nuclear Blast with cover artwork created by Stefan Heilemann (EPICA, LINDEMANN, INDICA among others).
Mastermind Peter states: “I was brainstorming about the cover with Heile again… And we got the result that I really needed. I rented a spacesuit and spinned away thereafter… Musically, the album is a development of where PAIN and LINDEMANN ended at – more experimental than what I’ve ever done before. Acoustic guitars and a helping hand again from Clemens of CARACH ANGREN with the orchestra arrangements, and some guest vocals. And Sebastian Tägtgren did a great job on the drums…”
More details and a European tour in October / November to be announced soon!
