Swiss hard rock veterans GOTTHARD have released the following statement:
“Dear GOTTHARD fans — it gives us great pleasure to announce that we have found a new singer. The successor to Steve Lee, who was killed in a tragic accident last year, is Nic Maeder and is Swiss-born. Nic was born in 1971 in Lausanne, lived in Melbourne, Australia and grew up between Switzerland and ‘Down Under.'”
Commented guitarist Leo Leoni: “Nic not only has a great voice and is a fantastic musician, but we also have a great person in our midst. We can rock again at last.”
Added the band: “During the months after the decision to carry on was taken, we received a huge amount of applications from all over the world; it was really overwhelming!
“At this point we would really like to thank everyone, especially the candidates, to whom we were not able to send a personal message.
“Thank you for your understanding and we wish all of you lots of luck and success in the future!”
Stated drummer Hena Habegger: “The search took a long time but it was clear to all of us when we met Nic that he was the right guy. With him we can enjoy the music again and celebrate new success. I’m really happy that we are continuing.”
The final decision for Nic Maeder was unanimous.
“We noticed straight away that the chemistry, both musically and personally, was right. For us, he is the new member of the family,” said guitarist Freddy Scherer.
Nic Maeder, who besides his singing position also plays guitar and piano, is a very talented and creative person. His songwriting ability also means he fits perfectly into the GOTTHARD family. He is the missing piece in the puzzle.
“Music has been my companion all my life and always was an important part of it. It is a great feeling to be able to share in the birth of a song and to see how it keeps growing. I can experience that with GOTTHARD and it makes me happy. I am making music with friends,” says Nic Maeder.
The band concluded: “Of course, you can write a lot about a new singer, but in the end there is nothing better than seeing and hearing him sing. We therefore decided to produce a song plus video [see below] as a thank you to our fans, which can be downloaded free of charge. It is dedicated to all our fans who didn’t lose their faith and trust in GOTTHARD. You have supported us with all your strength during the past months. Thank you so much!”
Said bassist Marc Lynn: “With Nic, we have taken the right decision for GOTTHARD. A lot of courage is needed to step into the footsteps of such a great singer. For that, Nic has earned our respect. Let’s never forget this and make Nic welcome in the family. We are in the studio at the moment and are working with renewed energy and enthusiasm on songs for a new album, which will be released in the spring of 2012.”
Steve Lee was killed on October 5, 2010 in what has been described as a freak road accident in Nevada.
JETHRO TULL’s Martin Barre is featured in a new interview with Classic Rock Revisited founder Jeb Wright. They discuss the history of the band’s breakthrough album, Aqualung, which is celebrating it’s 40th Anniversary. An excerpt is available below:
Jeb: It’s hard to believe Aqualung is 40 years old. You’re used to anniversaries but the number 40 really jumps out at you.
Martin: “These numbers come up and they’re like birthdays. When you have your 40th birthday it’s like, ‘WHOA!’ Then 50 is a big one and 60 is a big one but after that is 65, which is huge. I would imagine that after that you just go to 66 and then 67, as each one gets bigger the older you get; each day becomes an anniversary as you’re just happy to be alive. The thrill of the album’s anniversary dulls a bit because after this year will be the 40th anniversary of Thick As A Brick, and the following year, Passion Play. I’m very proud but I have trouble getting too excited.”
Jeb: When the big 10’s come up, like 40 years, it does give the fans a chance to look back and remember why that album was so special to them.
Martin: “The packages are very nicely put together and they’re great for the fans. Jethro Tull has never patted ourselves on the back, ever. We’ve never gone down to the pub and said, ‘It’s been forty years; pour me a glass of champagne.’ It’s a shame because we’re living in an age where everything is expendable. We don’t have a record company anymore. EMI deal with the back catalog but I’ve never talked to them. It is all very removed from the days when you would go to the record company in New York, or LA, and you would go to the office and know everybody. You would leave the building with armfuls of everybody else’s records. It was very personalized then but now, most of the record companies I deal with have gone bankrupt. They just don’t exist anymore. If they do, then they don’t have any money. There is not a lot of celebrating anymore. For me, the celebrating I do is when I walk into the studio, pick up my guitar and play something and think, ‘Yeah, that’s nice.’ I am proud of the albums and the history and it does mean a lot, however, it is what I’m doing today and what I’m going to do tomorrow that is really important for me.
Jeb: Jethro Tull is one band that has never worried about sales, style, what is in vogue or anything else; Tull makes the music the most important thing. You have a fan base that will accept whatever Tull does, not that they always like it, but they give it a fair listen.
Martin: “They are amazing and we’ve made them put up with some weird stuff over the years. They patiently sat through it. I guess because of them, we have license to change directions, which is great. If you don’t do that, you get so bogged down in a style that it gets hard to survive. Luckily, Ian and I both love writing music. I am writing music now. Sometimes, in the back of your mind you wonder, ‘Have I lost it?’ I then play and play and play until I go, ‘Yeah, I did it; I’ve still got it.’ I just love that. While I like it, that is still not what matters most, as you’ve got to get a few thousand other people to like it as well. Jethro Tull’s fans have given us the opportunity to do a lot of stuff. They allow us to do solo projects and to play with other people. We are able to take the music to a lot of places that fans of other bands may not have allowed them to take it; it’s great.”
Aqualung is Jethro Tull’s most recognized album and a definitive rock classic. Now, 40 years after its release, this prized recording received a collection worthy of its historic status on October 31st. This is not a simplistic rehashed remastering aimed at squeezing another few pounds, dollars, euros, etc. out of the recording. Want proof? The limited collector’s edition’s contents include:
– 180g heavyweight LP, 2CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray including various unreleased materials, a new stereo mix, the original Quad mix, and 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital Surround. The “special edition” includes just the two CDs.
– 12″x12″ 48-page hardback book featuring liner notes and an interview with Ian, Q&A with engineer John Burns, Don Lawson (initially written for Classic Rock Presents Prog in March 2011), memoirs from band members (Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond (bass guitar), Martin Barre (guitar), Clive Bunker (drums), Barrie Barlow (drummer following Clive Bunker’s departure), Glenn Cornick (original bassist on early recordings), Terry Ellis (Manager) and Jennie Franks (Ian’s first wife who wrote the lyrics for the title track), rare photos, notes on the new mixes by producer Steven Wilson, and Billie Ritchie (from ’60s rock band and label mate CLOUDS), rare photos, album lyrics, and more.
Ian’s comments: “Well – it’s finally here! The superb remixes by Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson in both stereo and 5.1 Surround. Plus the re-mastered original mixes, bonus tracks, alternative versions and takes of the classic Aqualung material from 40 years ago. When I wrote and recorded these songs and slaved over a hot audio-mixer in Island Records’ Basing Street Studios, I never thought we we would be celebrating this 40th Anniversary release, soon to be released in October. But you can’t keep a good song down. Many of these are still favourites on stage today in our concerts throughout the world. I hope you enjoy this splendid EMI release and, if there’s someone out there you really love, then why not treat them to the Collector’s Edition in all its glory. Or, come to think of it, if there’s someone out there you really dislike, then the same might apply. Each to his own. Me – I kinda like it….. For those of you easily confused about such things, a ‘remix’ is not the same as a ‘re-master.’ Remixing involves going back to the original studio multi-track masters and balancing and perfecting the sound on all the individual instrumental and vocal tracks and creating from them a new stereo or 5.1 surround master.
Remastering’ is just the cleaning up and making a new copy of the original stereo master – which usually results in a clearer and more sparkling listening experience than the original, when CDs were usually just the vinyl master copied straight to the then new CD medium. These days, with digital audio, we can afford to get more dynamic range and frequency response compared to the vinyl album and (God forbid) cassette versions of old.
Many thanks to Tim Chacksfield and Steve Davis at EMI for all their hard work and initiative in making this happen. And to the enthusiastic and respectful Steven Wilson, who has just sent me the remixes of another album to listen to, which he has been working on. But, another year, another story.”

“The Temple of Rock is within me”, says Michael, “where I create since I was introduced to the amazing invention of the distorted guitar which is for me the most enjoyable and the best possible way to express myself. The rock guitar sound that I fell in love with, mostly expressed as lead breaks, is what I have nurtured and treasured all of my life. Combined with the infinite spring from within and the amazing musicians around me I keep expressing an on going development of my art (being).”
“With Temple of Rock”, Michael adds, “I am entering a new stage of my life, a new level of existence enjoying life more than ever, reaping the joy of all sorts of developments from the past. These days I just want to go out there, play and have fun. Also, it seems to me that collectively, with true expressive makers of rock music, we have been building the external Temple Of Rock for many years and have now come to the point of putting on the roofing and celebrating the almost completion of the Temple. All generations of this period are meeting all over the world on one stage it seems celebrating an era of “hand make rock”, which will never be the same again due to invention of new technology but of course New Temples and New Wonders will arise to enjoy expressions in new ways”.

VIRGIN STEELE frontman David DeFeis has checked in with the following update.
“We want to thank everyone who came to our concerts in South America, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Germany and the USA over the summer, and Spain, Italy and Greece these past few weeks. It was an honour for us to visit you all. We truly had a most amazing time performing for you, and we look forward to seeing you all again very soon. Plans are already underway for what will be our 30th Anniversary concerts, plus we are planning some US shows for within the next few months, and we are playing the 70000 Tons Of Metal Cruise in January.
We look forward to seeing you all. Thanks very much for a great summer and autumn. Cheers.”
As previously reported, SPV/Steamhammer is re-releasing Virgin Steele’s Age Of Consent. This two-CD digipak re-release comes with bonus tracks, five of them previously unreleased, and a massive booklet with new liner notes and unseen photos. And since 1988 the first time again on vinyl.
Release date Europe: November 28th
Release date Germany: November 25th
Release date USA/Canada: November 22nd
Age of Consent was the fourth full length album by Virgin Steele. It took eight months to be completed, in comparison with Noble Savage that was recorded in a few weeks, and was originally released in October 1988. The songs of this album follow in style and content the music of the previous album. Before the release of Age Of Consent the Virgin Steele toured heavily in Europe as special guest for BLACK SABBATH and MANOWAR.
David DeFeis comments on the re-release:
“To me Age Of Consent is the album that I usually refer to as…”the one that got away album” in our career. When it was originally released it was sent out into the World without any promotion or fanfare, much like a soldier, catapulted onto a battlefield, naked and without any weapons. Because of this many people were completely unaware of its existence. Therefore we are absolutely over the moon about being able to present it to you once again. For this re-issue, I have re-mastered all the songs from the original source tapes, and…added several more bonus tracks. Some of the bonus material features brand new compositions, and other tracks are covers that have been re-arranged and in some cases re-written. We hope that you will join us in celebrating our anniversary, and….we hope you will enjoy and play at maximum volume…these Barbaric-Romantic creations….”

SAXON‘s documentary, “Heavy Metal Thunder – The Movie“, will be screened at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (701 Mission St.) in San Francisco, California on December 9, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Admission: $8
SAXON are true heavy metal heroes. Their story is a classic rock ‘n’ roll saga: five friends from the backstreets of Yorkshire setting out to take on the world. The resulting chart glory, mixed with band infighting and full-on rock excess, ensures their dramatic tale will become part of heavy metal history.
This feature-length documentary film tells the full warts-and-all story of 30 years of heartache, earache, success and excess. Produced by critically acclaimed documentary filmmakers Coolhead, it not only has contributions from SAXON, past and present, but also from the likes of Lars Ulrich (METALLICA), Lemmy and “Fast” Eddie Clarke (MOTÖRHEAD), Harvey Goldsmith, AIRBOURNE, AMON AMARTH, Doro Pesch and many, many others. It also features freshly-uncovered archive material, including the band performing in 1979 on MOTÖRHEAD‘s “Bomber” tour, recording sessions and interviews from the “Crusader” and “Innocence is No Excuse”albums, a classic concert from 1981, along with stunning headline performances at Wacken Open Air in 2009 and the now-legendary inaugural St. George’s Day show in London. The whole production was funded by SAXON‘s army of loyal fans, who pre-ordered copies of the film before it was completed, providing Coolhead Productions with the budget to make the film.
Swedish pioneers of progressive death metal OPETH are confirmed for the Wacken Open Air 2012, which is set to take place August 2nd – 4th in Wacken, Germany.
Confirmed acts for Wacken 2012 now include: AMON AMARTH, CORONER, CRADLE OF FILTH, DARK FUNERAL, DIMMU BORGIR (with orchestra), ENDSTILLE, FORBIDDEN, GAMMA RAY, HAMMERFALL, IN EXTREMO, DANKO JONES, MACHINE HEAD, MINISTRY, MOONSPELL (with orchestra), NAPALM DEATH, OPETH, PARADISE LOST, AXEL RUDI PELL, HENRY ROLLINS (spoken work engagement), SATURNIAN, SCORPIONS, SICK OF IT ALL, SIX FEET UNDER, U.D.O.
