Guitarist, composer and lyricist René Berthiaume spent almost four years working on the new creation. The outcome is a very emotional and above all else, a very personal album. It harks back to the roots of the band, without neglecting the bombastic nature of the previous two records. Melodic Metal, powerful yet playful, heavy but emotional, inspired but independent – “Erdentempel” cleverly crosses genre borders and allowed the band to try out some bold experimentation, which cemented this album as the best in their discography to date.
Greek/Swedish melodic death metal act NIGHTRAGE has signed to a new label Sweden’s Despotz Records and has a new studio home,Dug Out Productions, and announced a brand new singer in Ronnie Nyman (from Swedish hardcore/metal band Always War). Now the band is going to celebrate their return with an announcement about a new album.
”The Puritan” is an uncompromising, dramatic and melodic death metal journey in its purest form. Eleven tracks crammed with brutal riffs, unforgettable hooks and the biggest production on any NIGHTRAGE release.
New front man Ronnie Nyman confirmed his right to the position in NIGHTRAGE with his over the top stage persona, cool character and amazing vocal skills during the band’s Japanese and Russian tours last year, and brings a new fresh approach to the NIGHTRAGE signature sound.
Songs Like The title track: ‘The Puritan’ and ‘Kiss Of A Sycophant’ bring that pure metal kick in the balls that many bands tend to forget about today. Songs full of energy, fast and frenetic riffing and super melodic guitar lines and expressive solos, showcasing a wide array of dynamics, courtesy of NIGHTRAGE main man Mario Iliopoulos.
With a nod to their past, Marios invited former NIGHTRAGE blood brother and long time friend, Gus G (Firewind/Ozzy Osbourne) to lend his incredible guitar skills to ‘When Gold Turns To Rust’, another huge NIGHTRAGE anthem.
The production from recording-guru Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, Inflames, Dimmu Borgir, Devin Townsend, Evergrey, Soilwork) and George Nerantzis from Dug Out Productions Studios in Uppsala.
I have never been a fan of Black Metal. The music, lyrics and artwork of this genre never could encourage me to be excited about it. But it is different where MELECHESH are concerned, who seriously like to describe themselves as “Sumerian Black Thrashing Metal”, but technically, we can say their music is Oriental Black Metal. Apart from their music, artwork, make up and clothes which makes them seem different from other Black Metal bands, it is the contents and concepts which make this band unique in this genre of music. Everything seems to be about the past and present in the Middle East, with of course some serious messages for their fans.
I recently had a chance to have a chat with the band’s main man, Ashmedi, which you can listen to below.
As the band will see the release of their upcoming album “Enki”, very soon, I started our chat and asked him about this album, and he stated that “It’s one of the hardest albums to make.” He continues “It’s filled with dualistic expressions – it’s an album of duality, be it musical, be it metaphorical or lyrical. After getting out of the studio I have no clue if it’s good or bad.“
So I moved on and asked him about Enki, why and how. Ashmedi answered me: “I’ve known Enki since I was a kid actually, we used to hang out in the park together” (laughs). I’ve had to refresh my memory about it, but let me explain something – Enki is also a metaphor you know, I’m very fascinated with the origins of mankind – how we develop, how we’re made. Beside the Darwinistic theory which is making full sense to me, I’m talking about the intellectual development, civilization development, so I like the theory of Anunnaki. Enki is the creator of mankind, wasn’t just a simple work in the laboratory, DNA genetic modification, these things I like to explore. Also, since he’s King of the Gods, sorry, the God of the Gods in Mesopotamian mythology, I thought it’ll be a great honour to pay respect for such a deity, or to call the album such a name that is short, concise and very true to the traditions of Melechesh.“
MELECHESH ‘s lyrics and its contents are interesting for almost everyone, so I did not waste time and asked Ashmedi what exactly the band had to say in this album. He seems to be interested to talk about this, and answered me as follows:
“A song like ‘The Palm The Eye And Lapis Lazuli’ is a reference to the Middle East – the evil eye, the palm, the khamsa, which is a tradition to prevent the evil. And the lapis lazuli, you know the stone found in ancient Mesopotamia, Persia, everywhere – it’s a message I wrote to certain types of human beings. ‘This is your warning’ I say, ‘you bite yet you feed’ – it’s double meanings. The bronze hand say of a super advanced creature, or it could just be you’re biting the hand of this Mediterranean guy that helped you out in life – you know, double meanings.
‘Lost Tribes’ is about the ancient peoples of the Near East, but also it’s about what’s happening right now. It’s about history repeating itself and how dumb we are that we don’t learn. When I say ‘heads buried in the sand’ it’s an expression, like an ostrich, they bury their heads in the sand to not know what’s going on, that’s an English saying. We only use small portions of our brain, imagine the cognitive power if we used more.”
I knew even days before this interview that it was going to be a serious one and a little risky for me. But how could I carry on and not ask about the recent horrible issues especially in the Middle East and regarding ISIS. “I want to leave room for interpretation – for example people when they see our photos, we covered our faces. A couple of non-enlightened people thought it’s pro-extremism, not knowing that this is simply the traditional clothing of ancient times.” Ashmedi sounded more serious and he continued “Melechesh transcends politics – I’m not playing the game, I’m talking about common sense and that song is against ISIS.“
Mentioning ISIS was a good excuse for me to move on and ask him about that horrific event which happened to the Jordanian pilot. Now Ashmedi seemed more angry, he commented: “It’s fucked up man, they’re fucked up people out there. This is not about politics, it’s about common sense. They’re obviously doing this I don’t think out of joy, maybe out of strategy, to make fear.
I don’t think they wake up in the morning and think ‘oh wow, it’ll be cool to burn someone’ – if they are, then they’re the most savage things ever. I’d rather live among lions, I’d feel more safe.
So I don’t know, it’s weird shit going on and what I also know is in politics, nothing is straightforward, you never know who plans what. I think every intelligent person would think that way.”
MELECHESH ‘s sixth full-length album, “Enki”, is set to be released on February 27 (EU), March 2 (UK) and March 10 (US), via Nuclear Blast. Also the album will feature iconic guests Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, KILLER BE KILLED), Sakis Tolis (ROTTING CHRIST) and Rob Caggiano (VOLBEAT, ex-ANTHRAX).
The album was recorded in Greece by Giorgos Bokos (ROTTING CHRIST) while Jonas Kjellgren (IMMORTAL, LEGION OF THE DAMNED, OVERKILL, HYPOCRISY) took care of the mix and mastering in his renowned Black Lounge Studios in Sweden. Drums were recorded at Devasoundz Studio with Fotis Benardo (ex-SEPTICFLESH, ex-NIGHTRAGE).
Chris Tsangarides is an honourable Greek Cypriot-British Grammy-nominated record producer, sound engineer, and mixer, best known for his work with many heavy metal bands, including HELLOWEEN, JUDAS PRIEST, OVERKILL, THIN LIZZY, Yngwie Malmsteen, BLACK SABBATH and many more. He is also known for a guitar recording technique called “the vortex”, which he first used when recording the guitar of John Goodsall for the Brand X album “Moroccan Roll” in 1977. Yesterday, 10th February was Chris ‘s 40th anniversary of making records.
Mr Tsangarides posted the following statement via a post on facebook:
“Today marks my 40th anniversary of making records! 10 Feb.75 was a Monday and I was so thrilled to be starting my job! I’ve never done anything else….I’m so glad to have started it during that era of music Free, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Lizzy,Tull etc and young breakthrough bands like UFO, Judas Priest and of course the NWOBHM……there has been so much change in the recording industry during these past 5 decades that it has become a totally different animal from what it was in its heyday. Still having said that, I’m very proud of the small dent that my recordings have contributed to the great British recording industry!”
We at Metal Shock Finland would like to send out a special congratulations to Chris Tsangarides on his epic and great job.
Perhaps you were shocked when you saw or heard that Tenacious D won a Grammy award in the “Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance” category in the pre-telecast ceremony at the 57th annual Grammy Awards, or maybe not?! And since last night I have read many sarcastic, angry, complicated, reasonable and also nonsensical comments and jokes about it on the social networks and that it was just like last year and the year before that…. “Every year people say that the Grammys don’t mean shit and yet every year they pay attention to it and get angry.” An Iranian metal fan, Saman, commented “Next year Taylor Swift will win the best metal performance and I will not be shocked.” But there is a point which is mostly missed here, Who Should Be Blamed For This Lack Of Knowledge About Metal Music In The Grammys Award Team? Do we really need to blame them, or blame anyone? Or maybe we are just ignoring something?
I believe we cannot critique something without at least a little knowledge about it. So I suggest you continue reading this paragraph to find out more. First of all, the Grammy, is an accolade given by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) of the United States, to recognise outstanding achievement in the music industry?! But where does that nominees list come from? Obviously not from “Hell” or “Another Universe”. Record companies and individuals may submit recordings to be nominated. Once a work is entered, reviewing sessions are held, by more than 150 experts from the recording industry, to determine whether the work is eligible and then entered in the correct category for official nomination. Then it will be down to NARAS members to decide, the five recordings that earn the most votes in each category become the nominees. For the final step, the lists are sent to Recording Academy members, who may then vote in the general fields and in no more than eight of the 30 fields. NARAS members are encouraged, but not required, to vote only in their fields of expertise. I think you may have got the point by now!
Perhaps you have noticed two main points from the information above and that is where I want to begin and for us to remember our responsibilities and duties as metal lovers. First, are our record companies doing their job perfectly? Do they send their records from their best and successful artists to the Grammys? For example, have Nuclear Blast, which is the biggest and most honourable record label in our family, mentioned for example ACCEPT, “Blind Rage” and the band’s performance to the Grammys? As I know ACCEPT had a great year by releasing the successful “Blind Rage” album and also a fantastic tour. I did not hear of anyone being unhappy at an ACCEPT show! Well, maybe Nuclear Blast did or maybe not, we don’t know, but I would like to suggest here to all rock and metal record companies, to reveal the list of the artists who have been sent to the Grammys every year. So we will know who is there and who is not.
The second point is that who are those 150 experts? Do they know metal music? Do we have any of our members there? I believe not, or maybe not enough to stop Tenacious D winning. This is a complicated subject but I think we still can do something about it. “Right is taken, not given” and so I suggest a kind of campaign to let the Grammy editors know that we have some more than qualified experts in our family who should be on their experts list. I think some of our journalists and writers such as Alexander Milas and Martin Popoff, everyone from Metal Hammer, Terrorizer and other very well known magazines, and also some of our very active musicians such as Andy Sneap are very capable of that. Then we could be sure that there are some true metal experts who could champion Ronnie James Dio and every artist like him, while they are still alive!
Now there is a question here; why has the metal music industry been so passive against the main stream events, especially one such as the Grammys, for all these years? I cannot remember seeing any complaint comments from any major or tiny metal record company. Is it because of our lack of self-confidence? Or is it because we think we are a separated part of society? Or maybe it is just because we were happy with what we had and we have a lack of Ambition?! I don’t know, but I think these are some good questions which maybe some sociologists and psychologists can answer. But for now, I am sending this WARNING alert to all of you, that if we carry on being passive like this, we will see our industry dead one day, unless record labels, magazines, festivals and fans join the forces to “Stand up and shout.” Main stream music should learn about true metal music. “To arms my brothers and sisters, to arms!”
In the end, I would like to say that the Grammy Awards is a big event which we cannot ignore easily. It could be another opportunity for us to awaken those sleepers who have still not discovered the mightiness of metal music and it so worth fighting for it. You cannot say “the Grammys means nothing” just because you are not happy with its winners and also we can not always blame others when we are ourselves are very passive. The human brain is a strange thing but it’s exactly the border between humanity and animals. Let’s find a reasonable solution instead of hateful comments. As my final word, I would like to send my congratulations to the true and only Voice Of Metal, Ronnie James Dio, whose name was mentioned again in a big event, even when he is not with us physically. Long live the magic of Ronnie James Dio! Long live METAL!
Having just celebrated their 30th band anniversary and the release of their exclusive song collection “The Soundchaser Archives” in 2014. Today is a shocking news day for RAGE fans, Nuclear Blast has revealed that German Heavy Metal pioneers RAGE have now announced the end of the band! But a few minutes later, Nuclear Blast corrected the news and claims that it is just the end of the band’s lineup as it has been for the past 15 years. So let’s read some statements about this event.
Guitarist Victor Smolski and bassist&vocalist Peter “Peavy” Wagner published the following statement:
Hi Rageheads, urgend RAGE News: After thinking it over carefully, Peavy and Victor decided to stop working together in the future. This is due to musical and personal changes.
“We have developed in different directions in the last years, that much, that we cannot identify with the current band situation anymore. In this situation we will also part from drummer Andre Hilgers. The last 15 years were blessed with many highlights and great releases but this era is over now. Every extension would be untrue to ourselves and to our fans. We wish each other all the best! Thanx to all the fans for your trust and support!”
Victor Smolski added: “Dear friends, after 15 fantastic years, 10 records and countless live shows with RAGE, I have decided to focus myself on other musical challenges. I really want to thank all RAGE fans, who supported me all those years. In the future I will concentrate on the new LMO CD. The orchestra project I founded and formed in 2013 will continue with the same lineup, just without Peavy. New musicians, giving this creative band new input, but also a new name will be revealed soon. Composing and producing the last record was so much fun to me and I want to thank everyone who supported me doing this. With all the experience from the shows with LMO, I’m quite sure the new album will be even more exciting. Expect the unexpected!”
“The Soundchaser Archives” 2CD/DVD box, featuring 30 rare/new/unreleased tracks, plus bonus DVD was released on May 23, 2014 via Nuclear Blast.
