Australian funeral doom metal meets classical music act ESTRANGEMENT is pleased to announce their upcoming new album “Disfigurementality”, due out November 25th 2022 via Aesthetic Death.
The single “The Light Unshown” is now streaming at THIS LOCATION.
Funereal-Flamenca-Nuclear-Jazz-Fusion-End-of-World Music – an eclectic doom metal masterpiece.
Aesthetic Death label manager Stu Gregg states:
“JS is not only a man of infinite wisdom and creativity – but a man of his word. Following the split (with Begrabnis, Weird Truth, 2016) he said he had an album brewing inside, with some great ideas. Following the excellent work on display in ESTRANGEMENT’s demo (2014) and split, it was certainly something that grabbed my interest.
We agreed to work on this together, spat on our palms and shook hands – an oath not to be broken. Years later that agreement comes to fruition.
‘Disfigurementality’ has been a highly anticipated release within the extreme doom scene – with many fans of the genre recognising the potential of this unique band.
The album brings together and melds various styles, with authentic traces of classical music, black metal, jazz fusion and even flamenco – however, at its core, ‘Disfigurementality’ remains a piece of extreme doom excellence.
ESTRANGEMENT have managed to solidify and expand upon the creativity of previous works, both through composition but also musically through the use of of flute, violin and double bass through the album. The string arrangements range from the soaring and sublime, to the excruciatingly harsh.
Another notable feature of the album is the wide range of vocals – from the extreme doom growls that JS has as a trademark – yet notably the use of howling violent screams, to throat singing, to liturgical chant, all forging different emotions throughout the album.
‘Disfigurementality’ has the melancholic beauty of My Dying Bride, it has the obscure darkness of Unholy – but it has much more to explore. It is an album of beauty, beguilement and darkness. It will lead you on a journey filled with abrupt changes, seductive tangents and crushing heaviness. It demands the attention that should be given to any great album – go with its unique flow and be richly rewarded.
Not only have ESTRANGEMENT created a fantastic full length debut album – they have created an album that will establish them as leaders in the extreme doom genre, and beyond”.

DRYAD have announced their debut full length album, The Abyssal Plain, set for release via Los Angeles based heavy metal label Prosthetic Records on January 20. Accompanying the album announcement, DRYAD are currently premiering a music video for the lead single, titled Black Smoke, via Decibel Magazine. Kicking off both DRYAD and Prosthetic’s 2023 off with a bang, The Abyssal Plain is a 13 track literal and metaphorical trip to the darkest depths of the ocean.
Speaking on the album announcement the band comments: “We’re thrilled to present our debut full-length album, The Abyssal Plain, on Prosthetic Records. Written in an abandoned Iowa prairie schoolhouse, and recorded in a rural converted barn, these songs are the epic conclusion to our Silurian Age – a saga of prehistoric magic and mystery under attack from the modern world, as well as a phosphorescent reflection of our own internal shadows. Dive into the depths if you dare…the infinite darkness looms, but the light still shines within.”
Of Black Smoke, DRYAD adds: “Our lead single, Black Smoke, is a call to arms to save our oceans before it’s too late – a black metal d-beat attack in defense of water sanctity (as well as a slight nod to a favorite horror film). It’s a fitting first release that echoes our core sentiments against the exploitation of the world’s natural resources. The video itself is a haunting homage to our local DIY scene, filmed entirely live and featuring the specters of many long-time collaborators, supporters and friends who have helped us get to where we are today.”
DRYAD‘s take on black metal is as abrasive and primeval as you would hope from a band that draws their biggest lyrical influences from the furthest reaches of the ocean floor, far from even the weakest tendrils of sunlight. Their stygian take on the genre is chaotic and suitably lo-fi, but on The Abyssal Plain, the oppressive cacophony is punctuated with synth-heavy interludes heavily inspired by 80s horror movie soundtracks (think John Carpenter and Dario Argento).
The activity of the intricate ecosystems 10,000 feet below the surface of the ocean provides an abundance of material for lyrical horror stories of near-unbelievable monsters and mind-bending geological features, but DRYAD are keen to stress the environmental message woven throughout their music (the band itself is named after the mythological spirit and protector of the forests). Ocean environments are continuously being polluted and exploited for supposed human gain, and the despair and fury this elicits is palpable in the visceral sound of the band.
The real-life horrors that lurk on the deepest parts of the seafloor also serve as a metaphor for the tenebrose depths of depression and psychological struggle, reflecting a place where it is impossible for light to penetrate. And yet, even in those deepest, darkest depths, incredible creatures not only exist, but thrive – some even creating their own light – in seemingly the most inhospitable of environments. So, whilst this album is very much about the depths of the ocean and the alien creatures of the abyssal plains that lie at the bottom of our seemingly mundane Earth, it is also about feeling alone in the darkness and still creating your own light. Being able to manufacture hope in a seemingly hopeless place – both for oneself and for the future of the planet.
The Abyssal Plain was recorded in the band’s home state of Iowa by Luke Tweedy, mixed and produced by Jaxon Vesely, and co-produced by DRYAD’s Claire Nunez, before being mastered by Adam Tucker at Signaturetone. On their debut album, DRYAD have crafted a syntheses of sound – forged from foundations that are part horror story, part rallying cry.

Finnish metal band Koitos has released a single and a music video for the song “Ilman kurssia” (eng. “Without course”), which is the first release from the upcoming debut album.
“The song is about how self-centered behavior can lead you to be rejected by everyone. The narrator of the song adventures in maritime atmospheres, from which we also got the inspiration for the stormy atmosphere of the music video”, describes vocalist Matti Hiitti.
In addition to the composition and lyrics, the song was recorded and produced entirely by the band itself. In addition, the band’s bassist edited the music video and worked as an video shooting assistant. The song was mixed and mastered by Rami Nykänen, who has previously worked with bands like One Morning Left and Balance Breach.

“Far”, which combines hardcore, grind, math and post hardcore elements, is the rawest and darkest expression of the band’s sound, which finds its own peculiar identity in this work. The production returns an organic, natural and unedited sound, recalling the band’s live performance.
“Far” talks about distance in all its forms. The album begins with the memory of a loved one undergoing pain therapy, during which emerges the infinite distance that separates two people apparently very close. From this point on, each song represents various manifestations of “distance”: social, cultural, ideological, religious and, sometimes, of the individual himself from its own being.
The epilogue of the album in fact tells the local story of a man who begins to travel, trying to fill the loss of his wife. The journey leads to nothing but to the extreme decision to take his own life: “all that remains, is the dark of a void, full of my miles, but empty of me”.
“Here we are, far, far apart from each other. Universes, blending, touching, nowhere near “ (Check Pulse)
The album will be released in November 2022 by Controcanti Produzioni, Mothership Records, Fresh Outbreak Records, ItawakRecords, Tomb Tree Tapes and Flames Don’t Judge Prod.
