About Metal Blade Records: Founded upon owner Brian Slagel‘s enduring drive to find great bands and get their music out to as many people as possible, since 1982 Metal Blade has brought wave after wave of powerful, innovative, and often genre-defining music to the ever-hungry metal masses. It is this ethos that has seen Metal Blade build up a stunning and diverse catalog, weather the various storms facing any independent label, and in an age of declining record sales boast the most successful years of its existence as it celebrates its fourth decade.
Metal Blade Records launched Metallica, Slayer, Armored Saint, Fates Warning, GWAR, Cannibal Corpse, Amon Amarth,Whitechapel, The Black Dahlia Murder, Cattle Decapitation, and dozens more genre giants, shaping four decades and counting of hard rock, metal, and extreme music culture. Brian Slagel worked as a record store clerk when he founded Metal Blade in 1982, reserving a spot for a young Lars Ulrich on his Metal Massacre compilation series. Metal Blade grew from humble beginnings in Los Angeles to become an international powerhouse, selling millions of albums while remaining fiercely independent. In 2017, Slayer‘s Kerry King inducted the label into the Hall of Heavy Metal History. Slagel’s For the Sake of Heaviness: The History of Metal Blade Records arrived the same year.

“There was one day when I was playing along with the Deuce album which was a complete turning point for me as a guitar player.” – Johnny Marr
Released in November 1971, just six months after his eponymous solo debut, Rory Gallagher’s second album, Deuce, was the summation of all that he’d promised in the wake of Taste’s collapse. Rory wanted to capture the feeling of a live performance, so he would look to record immediately after live concerts while keeping production to a minimum.
He chose Tangerine Studios, a small reggae studio, in Dalston in East London, due it’s history with legendary producer Joe Meek. With Gerry McAvoy on bass guitar and Wilgar Campbell on drums, the album was engineered by Robin Sylvester and produced by Rory. Deuce features many Rory highlights, from the blistering Crest Of A Wave to the Celtic-infused I’m Not Awake Yet.

When asked “How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world,” Jimi replied: “I don’t know, why don’t you go and ask Rory Gallagher.” – Jimi Hendrix
“There are a million guys who sound like Stevie Ray Vaughan, but I never heard anybody who could really pull off sounding like Rory Gallagher.” – Slash
” As soon as I heard Cradle Rock, I was hooked. I thought, ‘This is what I want to be when I grow up.” – Joe Bonamassa
“I really liked Rory, he was fine guitarist and singer and lovely man.” – Jimmy Page
“He was just a magician, he’s one of the very few people of that time who could make his guitar do anything it seemed. It just seemed to be magic. I remember looking at that battered Stratocaster and thinking how does that come out of there?” – Brian May
“The man who changed my musical life was Rory Gallagher, I picked up a guitar because of him.” – Johnny Marr
“A beautiful man and an amazing guitar player. He was a very sensitive man and a great musician.” – The Edge
“An amazing player, very spirited… he had a particular sound using that Stratocaster and he really got it because of the brute force in the way that he played, he just had such a passion about it.” – Joe Satriani

IRIST have released a mesmerizing new track titled ‘Surging Ablaze’, taken from their forthcoming EP Gloria, out on September 16th via Nuclear Blast Records. ‘Surging Ablaze’ sees the nascent post-metallers hit a new stride, transcending our mortal coil with the ebb and flow of slow-burn melody, and sludgy, crushing atmospherics.
Vocalist Rodrigo Carvalho stated, “Surging Ablaze is a song about the contemplative journey, and meditative states, one experiences when getting to the other side of a difficult situation. On top of a beautiful lead for the chorus, Pablo wrote an insanely heavy riff towards the end of the song that definitely sticks to you. This is a rhythmically more measured song for us, and the fact that we were able to add some lyrics in Portuguese makes it even more unique.”
The Gloria EP finds IRIST’s music mixed again by Matt Bayles (Mastodon/Isis). Their explosive 2020 debut album, Order of the Mind, was “one of the most buzzed about metal debuts of the year” (Brooklyn Vegan). Kerrang! declared the four-piece “one of 2020’s most important metal acts” and Revolver dubbed the 10-song album one of the year’s “finest metal albums”. With a release, and tour, slated for the Spring of 2020, the band was sidelined in the wake of international lockdowns, with Carvalho moving back to Brazil and guitar player Pablo Davila moving to Texas to work in an Austin COVID-ward.
Now, with the Gloria EP on the horizon, as well as extensive tour dates with Pallbearer, Elder and upcoming record releases shows, IRIST are eager to pick up where they left off.

Hailing from Mongolia, THE HU have combined traditional music and instrumentation performed in their native language using native instrumentation with Western modern rock stylings to create a unique and catchy sound they have labelled as “Hunnu Rock.” The acclaimed rock outfit have today, September 2, unleashed their anticipated second official studio album RUMBLE OF THUNDER via Better Noise Music alongside the music video for the track “Bie Biyelegee.” In this lively video, THE HU can be seen dancing in the traditional Mongolian style of “biyelgee.”
“’Bie Biyelgee’ is about having a good time,” share THE HU. “We danced like we never danced before during the video shoot and the movements where we tried to imitate biyelgee were very challenging. The biyelgee movements require a different skill set than you would find in any dance genre so in that way, celebrating these qualities are fascinating and inspiring to us.”
THE HU are currently touring in support of RUMBLE OF THUNDER across the U.S. alongside Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeth until October 15, after which they finish off the year with a headlining run throughout Europe and the U.K. Earlier this year, THE HU hopped across the globe on their “Black Thunder” tour which included stops at Coachella (USA), Fuji Rock Festival (Japan) and headlining shows all over North America, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Find a list of all upcoming shows and ticket information HERE.
Five Finger Death Punch’s Zoltan Bathory shared his thoughts on the band via Instagram, “The Hu is out on the road with us – great band from Mongolia – you gotta check them out. I’m a Hun, so from the anthropologic perspective they are my cousins.”
Across its 12 tracks, RUMBLE OF THUNDER connects the world to Mongolian culture and its unique core values of natural preservation and spiritual connection with the earth. These core values are on full display in the album along with deeply meaningful lyrics that uplift Mongol people, as the band wishes for prosperity and peace among all. The band shared the eco-conscious debut single, “This Is Mongol,” in May which has since received over 3 million video views and over 1.6 million Spotify streams. In July, they revealed an epic action-packed music video for the first half of their nine-minute track “Black Thunder” before sharing its second equally tantalizing sequel in mid-August.
“‘Rumble of Thunder’ extends the variety of songs that the Hunnu Rock genre has and focuses on bringing new playing techniques that would sound unique and add more hard rock components to the songs,” THE HU state. “It was quite fun to record and most importantly, we had so much time to play and choose the best versions. Creative space and time are crucial, so we are very grateful to our friends and families who had our backs during the lengthy process. We also feel very much in sync in terms of understanding and complementing each other during performance. You will find that we have become an even closer unit in this album with many new surprises.”

German nu-metal stars OCEANS are back. After delivering the second in a trilogy of EPs earlier this year with Hell Is Where The Heart Is – Part II: Longing, the band have proudly announced the third and final part of the series Hell Is Where The Heart Is – Part III: Clarity which will be released on November 25th.
In addition, OCEANS will release Hell Is Where The Heart Is as a physical album on November 25th, comprising of the songs from the Hell Is Where The Heart Is EP series.
To coincide with the announcement, OCEANS have released a video for their brand new single called ‘If There Is A God She Has Abandoned Us’.
Timo Rotten comments: “No matter how positively you try to go through life, there are times when you just feel abandoned and left alone. It seems like everything is going down the drain, so how can one not lose hope in these times right now? Previous generations seemed to give no fucks about this world and now we’re left to pick up the shards. Some people just want to watch the world burn and I’m so fed up with all of this.”
OCEANS have already left a lasting impression on their two released EPs this year. The third part of this EP series closes the circle and builds on the lyrics and messages of the predecessors, which is now finally brought together as a whole on the album Hell Is Where The Heart Is.
Montreal Deathcore OG’s DESPISED ICON are celebrating their 20-year anniversary via a special rarities EP entitled DÉTERRÉ.
DÉTERRÉ means ‘Unearthed” in French. This is exactly what the latest release from DESPISED ICON is. The EP consists of 5 old-school songs dating back to 2004. It seemed fitting to remaster and re-release these early recordings to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the band, which took form in 2002.
DÉTERRÉ is out October 28th, 2022 worldwide via Nuclear Blast Records.
DESPISED ICON Alex Erian comments, “2004 was a definitive year for DESPISED ICON. After switching from drums to vocals and recruiting Alex Grind behind the kit, we started experimenting more and more, blending various elements of Death Metal and Hardcore together. Eager to get our name out, we played every show we could jump on and quickly recorded demo versions of ‘Bulletproof Scales’ and ‘Warm Blooded’. After uploading both tracks to Myspace and mailing a few hand-assembled CD-R promo copies to labels, people were finally starting to notice. The next thing we knew, we were booked on our first US tour with DEICIDE and were in the studio working simultaneously on a split CD for Relapse Records and on our sophomore album The Healing Process for Century Media. Unearthed after 17 years and available on tape and 10” vinyl formats for the very first time, the 5 demo tracks on Déterré capture the energy and excitement of that era. We hope you enjoy this limited edition EP and look forward to sharing new music with you in 2023.”
Below is the DÉTERRÉ tracklist: 1. Warm Blooded 2. Bulletproof Scales 3. One Last Martini 4. Oval Shaped Incisions 4. Sever The Ties
DÉTERRÉ was recorded throughout 2004 by Yannick St-Amand at Wild studio for a few songs and drums at Studio Victor while guitars, bass, and vocals by J-F Dagenais at his home studio. The band produced the album and mixing was a joint effort between Yannick St-Amand; and Jean-François Dagenais. Alexandre Goulet created the artwork for the EP.
