Japanese alt-rock band XANVALA released the digital single “Que Sera Sera”, an abrasive dark song that dropped on music platforms on May 6, 2022.
Since the band’s formation in 2020, XANVALA has been constantly delivering solid music incorporating different styles into a catchy rock foundation. After the release of their first full album “Tsuki to Taiyou” in February, XANVALA returns with “Que Sera Sera”. The intense track features a deep and highly distorted sound that plunges the listener into the realm of fatalism.
The band comments, “Our fans are avidly waiting for new music, so it was hard to determine what genre they want to listen to now. Their taste also differs depending on the generation. We are incredibly happy with the response that we have received from all over the world so far. “Que Sera Sera” is a song with an aggressive intro chock-full of djent. The tunning is lowered two tones from A# to F#. It’s heavy as hell. The piano melody helps to convey a story with a strong message in such a short song. We want to leave people craving for more. We are making music that our fans want to hear and bringing out the charm of XANVALAwhile embracing a wide range of genres. Please look forward to our next release.”
XANVALA are currently touring all across Japan, expecting to delight fans and first-comers in 20 different cities with their high-energy concerts. They have also set their eyes on performing overseas in the future to spread the uniqueness of J-rock and Visual Kei scene in other countries.
Miljenko Matijević is a world-class vocalist who embodies STEELHEART and has performed as the lead singer for the current-day DOORS and as the singer for the ‘fictional’ band STEEL DRAGON from the film ROCK STAR (starring Mark Wahlberg) which also includes Zakk Wylde, Matt Sorum and Jeff Pilson.
The Croatian rocker has lived in Korea and is now living in Los Angeles as he pursues music and acting opportunities. Matijevic has dedicated his most recent material to bringing the world together – releasing “Trust In Love”. The epic video is a love-letter to Korean culture, Directed/Produced by Matijevic along with Director of photography Robert Reed Altman (son of legendary director, Robert Altman).
Over two years in the making, the song was originally conceived as a plea for the peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula, but the song has evolved into a wider-reaching message for the masses. Amidst the current geopolitical climate, and the invasion and war on Ukraine in particular, Matijević’s song is inspirational and highly relevant. “One night after watching the news on television, I was saddened to hear about the pain and suffering that the people of North and South Korea are going through,” says Matijević. “I turned off the television and sat down at my piano, immediately the song started writing itself. The words ‘Trust in Love’ came to me, and I knew this song was meant for the Korean people. And now, in light of what’s happening in Ukraine, I feel that this message is something meant for the entire world.”
The song has been released in English and Korean on all major music streaming and downloading platforms. The Mandarin Chinese version is out today. Set to top the Guinness World Record for languages one song is recorded in, the verses of “Trust In Love” have been recorded in 13 languages, among them English, Korean, Mandarin, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Hindi, Croatian, French, German, Swedish, Russian and Ukrainian (the 14th) is in development.
A STEELHEART 30th Anniversary album, with a remake of STEEL DRAGON’s “We All Die Young” is in the works. Matijevic is also preparing for two feature film roles in the coming months.
One of the most ground-breaking, original, and fearless figures of popular music was undoubtedly the legendary Frank Zappa. And paying tribute to his late icon is THE ZAPPA BAND – a group largely comprised of former members of Frank’s bands. And for the first time ever, the group (who had previously opened a string of shows for prog greats King Crimson) will be headlining their own tour for much of June – beginning in New York on the 12th, and then wrapping up in New Hampshire on the 26th.
A “teaser” video for the upcoming tour can be viewed below.
And thus far, the reviews of The Zappa Band have been outstanding, including praise from LA Weekly (“for those of us who didn’t have the opportunity to see Frank perform, this is the best we can get and it’s damn good”), Pop Culture Beast (“each song was played to near perfection”), and the Fire Note (“a crew of old guys who knew and loved this music and seemed to be having the time of their lives on stage playing it again”), among other outlets.
The Zappa Band’s lineup features Zappa alumni Ray White (lead vocals, guitar), Mike Keneally (guitar, keys, vocals), Scott Thunes (bassist) and Robert Martin (keyboards, sax, vocals), and ZPZ alums Jamie Kime (guitar) and ZAPPA archivist Joe “Vaultmeister” Travers (drums, vocals). Each musician played in the studio and on the road with Zappa during his career, while three of these alums played on ‘ZAPPA 88: The Last U.S. Show,’ one of the most recent offerings from Zappa Records & Universal Music. The Zappa alums are joined by Joe Travers and Jamie Kime, who are no strangers to FZ’s music, to round out the ensemble.
MIKE KENEALLY was 25 when he joined Frank Zappa’s band in 1987. Since then, he’s played in the bands of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Devin Townsend, been a member of Dethklok, composed with Andy Partridge of XTC, written orchestral commissions for Holland’s Metropole Orkest, and made over 30 solo albums, including many with his band Beer For Dolphins. Scambot 2 is the most recent release.
Guitarist / Vocalist, RAY WHITE, got his first guitar from his brother, Charles, at fifteen. Ray’s first show was two weeks later. After four years in the Air Force, Ray headed to San Francisco. He played with Eloise Laws, Lee Oskar, Greg Errico and Lady Bianca (who recommended Ray to Frank Zappa). He played on several albums and tours with Frank. Ray was mentored by one of the world’s greatest composers. “Music is the Best!”
The son of two opera singers from Philadelphia, ROBERT MARTIN is a powerful singer, multi-instrumentalist and conservatory trained French horn player with an extensive list of top tier artists in his resume, including Frank Zappa, Etta James (on tour with the Rolling Stones), Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, Michael McDonald, and many more. He has composed for prime time television, and mixed and mastered top twenty hits in various genres.
Born in L.A. in 1960, SCOTT THUNES’ musical studies included late 60s and early 70s rock, jazz, fusion, Frank Zappa’s early Mothers period, and two years of music classes at junior college, allowing him to become ‘fantastic‘ enough to join Frank’s band in 1981. He played electric bass guitar, synth bass, sang vocals, and became rehearsal director in 1984. Currently he’s the Rock Band Teaching Artist at Marin School of the Arts, Novato High School.
Drummer JOE TRAVERS, a Berklee College Of Music grad, moved to L.A. in 1992 and joined Dweezil & Ahmet Zappa’s group “Z” in 1993. He’s played with Duran Duran, Lisa Loeb, Rich Robinson, Billy Idol, Zappa Plays Zappa, Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani among others. When not on the road, he spends his time as the “Vaultmeister” for the Zappa Trust archiving and preserving the legacy of legend Frank Zappa and co-producing and supervising future projects.
In addition to working with Zappa Plays Zappa, for which he collected a Grammy Award, guitarist JAMIE KIME has played with Jewel, Dr. John, Frankie Valli, et al., as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Czech National Symphony performing the works of Frank Zappa. He frequently plays The Baked Potato jazz club in Los Angeles, and is on the faculty of The Musician’s Institute in Hollywood, CA.
“A lot of amazing Frank Zappa music played with intensity, humor and love,” says Kenneally about what fans can expect from the band. We’ll be enjoying the opportunity to play different material from night to night; we know that often people like to attend multiple shows, and our repertoire is presently large enough to be able to change things up. So, while we will be playing the songs we played last year opening for King Crimson, we won’t necessarily play them all every night, and we’ll be playing lots of other things besides.”
Soon, the music of Frank Zappa will be celebrated once more on the concert stage, with the launch of The Zappa Band’s U.S. tour.

‘Strange Desires’ is the second single lifted from the upcoming L.A. COBRA album titled Superstition, and is now available on all digital platforms via Crusader Records.
The song, which features Slade Sleaze – L.A. Cobra’sguitarist – on vocals in the verses, encourages the sharing of the “often” secretive desires and fantasies that are kept secret from a lover. It includes a unique yet catchy chorus that takes inspiration from bands like Queen and ABBA, but with the rough edge of these South African sleaze rockers.
‘Strange Desires’ is the follow up to L.A. Cobra’s recent single ‘She’s My Prison’, and their new album Superstition is set for release later in 2022.
Formed in November 2005, L.A. COBRA is the only sleaze/glam/hair metal band on the African continent. They are the “sleaze rocking hair metal stars” from Pretoria (home of multi-platinum rock superstars SEETHER), flying the 80’s glam rock flag from the handlebars of their Harley’s whilst making a name for themselves internationally and locally.
As many artists have experienced, the past two years hit the entire music and culture industry hard. But MY SLEEPING KARMA – they have truly faced the abyss. Formed almost 20 years ago as a strong bond of best friends with a steady line-up ever since, the band has amassed an incredibly successful back catalogue of five highly acclaimed records and a live album in 2017, as well as extensive touring performances at sold-out venues and prestigious festivals that have marked them as one of the most well-respected instrumental post- and hypnotic rock bands within the heavy music community.
Closing a seven-year gap since their latest studio album, Moksha, MY SLEEPING KARMA have announced the release their most emotional, deep, and darkest record to date, inspired by tragic events, on July 29, 2022 via Napalm Records.
The new album, entitled Atma, describes the (absolute) self, the indestructible, eternal essence of the spirit, and is often translated as the “soul”. Sickness, death, and existential fear had brought the band to a point in music and life at which they were close to parting ways. But their will to survive has been recorded on Atma – a record the band wasn’t even sure would see the light of day when they started working on it back in 2017, and if it did, would’ve never been for industry sales, fame or success. Atma tells the story of their lives, processing the trauma of personal tragedies, deepest pain and fear of four best friends that have been going through their darkest days since their band existence.
Today, MY SLEEPING KARMA have released the first single taken from Atma! ‘Prema’ excels with a wide sound spectrum ranging between hard-hitting rock moments, ambient vibes and synth post-rock grandeur that bridge majestic texture and fast-paced dynamics. Watch the haunting music video for ‘Prema‘, created by Johanna Amberg & Gabriel Sahm, now streaming here:
“We already started working on the video content back in 2018. The world is full of hate, envy, fear and greed and it seems the competition never stops,” the band comments.
“Society is becoming more and more lost in a dog eat dog jungle, and back then we would have never thought that in 2022, it would be even worse. Besides the latest pandemic or the Russian/Ukrainian war, so many individuals are facing massive conflicts on a daily basis.
In the end, there´s always hope that the world will become better again, once mankind understands. Love is the key and peace starts inside of everyone. The video track ‘Prema’ tells that story and the entire album is all about this. “Atma” goes out with love to our dear families, friends and fans. Thanks for supporting us over the years and especially in the latest dark times.”
Most of the six new album tracks near the 10-minute mark and shine in distinctive MY SLEEPING KARMA fashion – from crystal clear, otherworldly intros bursting into bittersweet melodies of vulnerable beauty to imposing soundspheres of mesmerizing heaviness with entrancing undercurrents. From the album’s first tone, it’s immediately evident that Atma isn’t just another new MY SLEEPING KARMA record – it’s an infinite darkness, despair and sadness that furiously drives the German four-piece on studio album number six. As Dave Wyndorf once said, MY SLEEPING KARMA is ART – and their new, cathartic record not only captures the zeitgeist of the times, but leaves a little light for hope, love, beauty and strength amid all the ugly facets of our vulnerable lives.
Atma was produced, recorded and mixed by drummer Steffen Weigand at New Life Studios, and was mastered by Andreas Balaskas at Masterlab Studios in Berlin. The album artwork has been created by incredibly talented artist Sebastian Jerke. The pre-sale of Atma has just started at THIS LOCATION, the album will be available in various formats.
Enigmatic dark metal outfit DEATHWHITE will be releasing their third full-length, ‘Grey Everlasting,’ on June 10 via Season of Mist! The band is now sharing their emotional new single, “White Sleep,” which can be heard at THIS LOCATION.
DEATHWHITE comments:
“It is our utter distinction to share the third single from Grey Everlasting, ‘White Sleep.’ Like ‘Earthtomb,’ ‘White Sleep’ explores new territory, most notably on the vocal front. We have long been wedded to clean vocals, but ‘White Sleep’ provided the opportunity to try something more aggressive.
“The song is our encapsulation of the last several years when the desire to remain in a state of eternal sleep sometimes outweighed dealing with the reality that is the world and its innumerable, unsolvable issues. It is no doubt a struggle many have experienced. In the end though, it is a far greater achievement to pull oneself up by the proverbial boot straps and forge ahead.”
‘Grey Everlasting’ is available to pre-order HERE and can be pre-saved to your streaming library HERE.
The cover was created by Jérôme Comentale.
