The Metal Voice recently spoke to former Mercyful Fate and King Diamond drummer Snowy Shaw. Watch the interview below.
Excerpts from the interview
When asked if the band Ghost who is also from Sweden took his stage ideas and made them popular “You are certainly were not the first to ask about that. Gus G the guitar player told me, WTF this band (Ghost) is getting so popular they are doing what you did with Notre Dame way back. I suppose but it all stems from, Author Brown starting off with corpse paint, then it was Alice Cooper, onto Kiss onto this theatrical thing. We all take bits and pieces and copy and inspire and do our own thing and do our own version of it. King Diamond is also a result of Welcome to my nightmare (Alice Cooper), that kind of theatrical show. I want to say that Ghost hasn’t ripped me off but they have certainly managed to make it big.”
When asked if he was a little disappointed in not being asked to participate in the upcoming Mercyful Fate reunion “I’m not upset. My wife she called me from work and said I saw Mercyful Fate is getting back together weren’t you involved in that band? Yes I was but what lineup is it? So I called Mike Weed (guitarist) cause apparently he is going to be in the reunion. So it means that Michael Denner is not going to be there. Who is playing the drums then? Is it Bjame (Holm) who replaced me he (Weed) said we are going to continue from the last album 9 and we are going to pick it up from there. And I said how about Sharlee D’Angelo (bassist on 9) . No we haven’t contacted him, it’s going to be Joey Vera (Armored Saint). I don’t want to get involved in that I wasn’t upset. I haven’t been in that band for many years. I rather move forward and take on new challenges rather than go backwards. “
When asked if it bothered him that they used a drum machine on the King Diamond’s album The Eye “It’s not a drum machine. The thing is I kind of regret spilling the beans or maybe a slip of the tongue. I was doing this interview with Borivoj Krgin for Metal Maniacs magazine (at the time) when we were doing the Memento Mori album in 1993. And he said wow I love the drumming (The Eye), it’s so technical and progressive and I said yeah it was a drum machine. My English was so- so, even worse back then (Snowy eludes to that he misspoke using the wrong choice of words due to lack of English skills at the time). But it wasn’t a drum machine obviously. I was playing on pads and parts were sort of programmed because that was what King insisted on doing. We didn’t have any time to rehearse or do anything like that was kind of their justification for that and I couldn’t understand it. It wasn’t a drum machine.
The eagerly awaited new BRUNHILDE album 27 (out: May 27) is all about the number 27.
In ten songs, this unique concept album describes the extraordinary stories of very ordinary people who all have one thing in common: They fatefully died at the age of only 27. Only song 11 – The End (already released in March 2022) – is dedicated to Jim Morrison, one of the many famous rock stars who also died at 27. As a further foretaste of the album the band has now released the next single Eye For An Eye And Tit For Tat – a 2 ½ minute song with which BRUNHILDE opens the next chapter of their 27 opus.
“The song is inspired by the story of a prostitute murderer who was caught and sentenced to death at the age of 27,” explains singer Caro Loy. “He was allowed to choose whether he wanted to be executed by lethal injection or the electric chair – and he chose the chair!”
Caro continues: “The song has more melodic passages than one would expect with this heavy topic; but that is intentional, because we want to make you think here: How would you decide – and, are you in favour of the death penalty or against it?” For the BRUNHILDE singer, the answer is clear: “I am clearly against the death penalty and I certainly wouldn’t get on the electric chair either.”
Another thing is for sure: With 27,BRUNHILDE have succeeded in creating a concept album like probably no other new band before!

World acclaimed keyboardist DEREK SHERINIAN, (Sons of Apollo, Black Country Communion), one of the most significant keyboard players of the modern era, will be releasing his upcoming new album, ‘Vortex’, on July 1st, 2022 on InsideOutMusic. Returning alongside Sherinian is legendary drummer Simon Phillips, who once again co-wrote and co-produced the album, as well as Tony ‘The Fretless Monster’ Franklin, on bass.
Today, Derek is pleased to release the title track from the album.
Tracklisting: 1 The Vortex feat. Steve Stevens 2 Fire Horse feat. Nuno Bettencourt 3 Scorpion 4 Seven Seas feat. Steve Stevens 5 Key Lime Blues feat. Joe Bonamassa, Steve Lukather 6 Die Kobra feat. Michael Schenker, Zakk Wylde 7 Nomad’s Land feat. Mike Stern 8 Aurora Australis feat. Bumblefoot
The follow-up to 2020’s The Phoenix, Vortex includes eight tracks built on his signature chameleonic sound that blends rock with elements of funk, prog, and jazz, which he started writing even before The Phoenix was finished. “Vortex is a continuation of The Phoenix,” Sherinian states. “However, I feel the composition is stronger on the new album, and I would describe it as a modern day 70s style fusion record, but with newer heavier tonality.”
When it came to guitars, Sherinian recruited a who’s who of great players, some of whom he had worked with before – Steve Stevens, Joe Bonamassa, Steve Lukather, Zakk Wylde, Sons Of Apollo bandmate Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal – and a few new allies, in the form of Michael Schenker, Mike Stern and Nuno Bettencourt. “The choice of guitarist works itself out in the writing,” he explains. “Also, like in the case of Steve Stevens, we co-wrote the song together, so it was natural for him to play on it.” Of his new collaborators, he says of Bettencourt, who appears on the scratchy “Fire Horse”, “I have always been a fan of his playing, and I am glad that we finally got to record together. He has the Van Halen swing and swagger to his playing that I love. We were both born in 1966, the Chinese year of the Fire Horse.”
According to Sherinian, Schenker’s inclusion was a no-brainer. “Michael Schenker has been one of my heroes for many years. He asked me to play on his Immortal album, and in return, he agreed to play on “Die Kobra”. I wanted to write a great song inspired by my favorite Schenker tracks. Zakk Wylde added some great additional parts to the song, and Tony Franklin and Simon Phillips sound great, as usual.”
Keyboardist Derek Sherinian has more than made a name for himself. After all, MusicRadar.com deemed him “A true shredder, his virtuoso playing has seen him dubbed the keyboard-playing version of Eddie Van Halen,” in 2020. Moreover, in 2021 he was voted Greatest Keyboardist Of The 21st Century, and the eighth Greatest of All Time by the same site, and Prog Magazine saw him voted the ninth Greatest Keyboardist Ever. But then you don’t rack up a resumé such as his without some serious chops, having worked with the likes of Dream Theater, Black Country Communion, Billy Idol, Whitesnake – David Coverdale stating in 2020 “Derek plays like the son of Jon Lord”, – Kiss, current band Sons Of Apollo, and Alice Cooper – who in 1989 called him the “Caligula of keyboards”.
Extreme stadium grind with epic blasting assaults and windmilling rockin hooks to blow your fucken lids clean off – July 15th will see the release of “Grind ‘Til Death”, the debut album by Melbourne Death Metal/Grindcore powerhouse REMAINS. Formed in 2019 and featuring members of highly reputed bands Blood Duster, Captain Cleanoff, The Kill, Fuck I’m Dead, King, The Day Everything Became Nothing, REMAINS are slicing their name into the Australian metal scene, and soon in the rest of the world! In support of the new album, REMAINS have unleashed a relentless music video for the track “Bloodthirst”.
Frontman Tonebone comments: “Bloodthirst the first single of our debut album is basically about an Australian murder that took place in a town called Wollongong in the late 90’s which involved a killer who was found to be into satanism and killed a couple local blokes with extreme violence. The video which accompanies the song is also reminiscent of videos we saw growing up with ourselves moshin’ out, playing extreme music and looking brutal as f*ck along with a minor story line acted throughout the clip basically. We love that it captures the vibe of us playing and how you would see us perform onstage and see us really enjoying what we do with extreme brutality!!”
“GRIND ‘TIL DEATH” out on July 15th via Spikerot Records (worldwide) and Disdain Records (Australia)
